In our area, termites are a great problem. They have nests all over, underground. They depend on cellulose available in dead matter. So, they eat up all the fallen dry leaves or any wood that it can lay 'hands' upon. I had kept this wooden tub temoprarily for a couple of days as I was rearranging some things in my garden and it was on soil. This morning when I noticed the attack, I raised it up on a couple of bricks. This is how it attacks from the bottom. If I had failed to notice, in another couple of days, there would have been severe damage. Our house is unprotected from this menace and so I take care not to keep any wooden poles, or things for a long time, touching the soil.
Termites are a problem
That is really scary! What do you use for mulch?
All the dry leaves I put around the bases of plants esp. the ones with woody stems, but after some time, most of them are consumed by the little pests. In a way, they help I think in playing a role to the soil a la earthworms. My guess.
