Re: Random Image of Devil's Trumpet

How pretty! And interesting. Just saw trois' photo of Devil's Trumpet. I've never seen these before and would like to try growing one next year. Maybe from seed. My first thought was in front of our house, but that's not protected from deer. I'm afraid between the deer and caterpillers it might not fair well. Could find a place within the gated courtyard. It appears to tolerate a wide variety of conditions. Any advice regarding deer or my 7b zone?

Hi Debra,

Devil's Trumpet aka Datura gets confused a lot with Angel's Trumpet aka Brugmansia. Just so we are on the same page, check out the picture. Both come in a variety of different colors and both are poisonous. I don't know if critters eat brugs, but I do know that they will eat datura.

I have datura seeds I would be happy to share with you if that is what you are looking for.

X,

Angels look down from above and the devil looks up from below, right? I read that somewhere as the way to distinquish the two. The photo I saw was on my DG homepage because I have the random images chosen by DG staff programed there. There were about a dozen all together - definitely devil's trumpet aka Datura. They were two shades of purple in the same blossom. Just beautiful. And must be night bloomers like moonflowers? Someone had posted that horned worms love them and we have problems with them on our snowball bush already. Along with the deer!

I'm not sure what I have to offer in exchange, but I'd be glad to pay for some seeds. Thanks!

Debra

edited to add: Definitely the plant on the right of your two photos. They are beautiful by the way!

Thanks! The brug on the left is either Dr. Seuss or Sunray .. can't decide which .. the Datura on the right is Black Currant Swirl.

I had mites on my brug this year - they seemed to like it.

Mites - grrrrr - how can such tiny little things cause so much frustration?

Lol .. when I said critters I was talking about animal kind. Insects on the otherhand go after brugs and dats with a vengence.

X,

LOL I knew what you meant. I've never heard of a plant that was completely ignored by pests. If it's out there, I'd like to know about it!
