I heard on one of my gardening radio talk shows this info a few weeks ago and keep forgetting to pass it along...
Foster and Gallagher, filed for bankruptcy. They are the parent company of: Henry Fields, Gurneys, Breck's, Michigan Bulbs, Spring Hill, and Starks, they are all out of business.
Plants By Mail FAQ has some info and a link to a newspaper article. The radio show I listen to strongly suggested NOT to order anything from them, they said you will not get your order and will be out the $$. They all are supposedly still sending out fall catalogs like business as usual. The radio show said that there are already lots of people that sent $$ and got nothing and can reach no one.
I have not ordered from any so I can't say first hand but PLEASE be an informed and careful consumer before ordering anything from any of the above.
Foster and Gallagher, filed for bankruptcy!
jody thanks for the info. I don't deal with these companies personally but I believe there are some people who do!!
brecks????? wow!
Michigan Bulb?????? I used to order some from them but it got more of a contest to win a million than a plant source. I guess someone finally won the prize and it was to much on them.
wait, Spring Hill????? There's a couple of biggies in there!!!
Stark Nursery is about 45 minutes from me. Yes, they did close and layoff all of their workers. As a matter of fact, tonights news said that the Stark workers attended a job fair yesterday. I didn't realize Michigan Bulb was part of this, but I had heard rumors that they closed down, also. I have an order in, I guess that is money down the drain!
Its about time. Michigan Bulb Co. in particular has been ripping off customers for years now with puny, poor quality plants and lousy service. People got sucked in by the cheap prices and pretty pictures by the thousands. Like the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for". I say, good riddance!
I agree, Jerseyguy, but I sure do feel for the folks who have orders pending, and are looking at being out their hard-earned $$s. Not to mention the "rank and file" employees who are now unemployed.
Hopefully Jody's posting of this will give ample warning to anyone at DG who was thinking of ordering from them - thanks for getting the message out, Jody.

What a shame about Gurney's falling by the wayside. I have ordered from them for years and my plants were always healthy, orders were timely and replacements/customer service were wonderful.
Trish
Its a shame about Stark Bros. closing , my grandfather worked there years ago.Been watching the news about them, they are about 1 1/2 hrs away from me.
