germinating poppy seeds

Berkeley, CA(Zone 9a)

I collected many different kinds of my spent poppy seeds, sprinkled them over light mix of potting soil and perilite, put the containers close under grow lights and nothing had happened for over a month. Any suggestions?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Some poppies need light to germinate, do you have any seeds left to try without covering?

Summerville, SC(Zone 8a)

Hmmm .. You might want to try outside. The lights may have cooked the seeds or dried them out. I find that poppy does best sown where you want it. They don't really like being moved around unless you can scoop up the soil around the just emerging seedling without disturbing the roots and put it where you want.

I usually just toss mine in the garden

I scattered a bunch of poppy seeds in a brand new bed last fall and this was the result this June.

Wow Bloomer, makes me wonder why I went to the work of Winter Sowing them last year. LOL

Beautiful flowers, EB. Tell us what the tall blue/purple blooms are on the right?

Springboro, PA(Zone 5a)

Hi podster, the tall flowers are bee balm. Here's the view in the other direction.

Yeah, I did the same thing, and the birds ate the seeds. Did you sow them into the snow or directly onto the ground?

Springboro, PA(Zone 5a)

It was around Sept--Oct. I really cannot remember, but it was well before the first snowfall.

Very lovely garden, Bloomer. Thanks for sharing.

I took the seedheads off the poppies and scattered them on the ground around my exsisting poppies in hopes they will come up spring of 2007.

Keeping my fingers crossed.....Deb

Shirley and California poppies come up fine, but what is the secret to germinating Oriental poppies?

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

Check out Tom Clothier's site for germinating seeds - http://tomclothier.hort.net/page04.html

Papaver alpinum, atlanticum, kerneri, lateritium, nudicaule, orientale, pilosum, and rhaeticum, Sow at 20ºC (68ºF), germinates in less than two wks do not cover

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

If these are California Poppies, Tom Clothier suggests this: Eschscholzia californica , California poppy , ,Type= an , , direct sow in fall for spring germ. @ 70ºF , 10-20d , resents transplanting
