Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

What a gorgeous plant! I'll have to keep it in mind... thinking about a terrarium... :-)

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

19. odd one out Chirita tamiana

Not really sure why I decided to call this the odd one out. Perhaps because it doesn't do rosettes, but has a stem... but then there are other Chiritas with a stem like lavandulacea and horsfieldii. Hmmmm........

Anyway, as you all probably know, this is a mini and one tough cookie. I literally had some SEEDLINGS that didn't get water for 2 MONTHS and were still alive. Currently the red pot you see in the photo hasn't been watered in about as much. (Not recommending this desert regimen - just sayin' it's tough!)

Propagation by seed, leaf, cuttings..... This plant first came to me in the form of a free seed pod from a friend. That pod sprouted several hundred seedlings! it was a nightmare!

The flowers develop inside very prominent bracts, making them look a little funny. But I do love the blue and white flowers.

I find mine develop "necks" so I have to pot them deeper every now and then.

8. pure white Streptocarpella
I have this growing next a blue one, Concord Blue. The white is definitely less floriferous than the blue..... It's a sturdy plant though. I've found them oblivious to rain and drought, and I think I will put them out on the balcony next year as well.

5. classic Episcia Kee Wee

This one actually isn't a very old hybrid. I guess I just think of it as a classic of episcia hybridizing. Depending on culture, it can look rather mundane and ratty, but grown well, the bronzy brown coloring is a perfect backdrop for the reddish pink veins.

Growing this one well isn't difficult. This is one of my episcias that will never die. On numerous occasions, I have let it die off to a pair of tiny leaves with a leaf span of about half an inch. Somehow it comes back again and again, and every so often I give it enough water and light that it actually looks good.

Right now, mine is getting a bit too much light, but this has prompted some blooms on an otherwise pretty young cutting.
(That's Strawberry Patch right behind it)

Very nice! Are the blooms that typical Episcia orange-red, or are they a little different? I can't quite tell colors sometimes in photos...

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

yup, orange red. The pink next to it sure doesn't help.

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Actually, they are really a bit redder than the usual orangey red..... but just a bit.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Even a bit would help, LOL. You know how I often comment that I love the foliage so much on a plant that I wouldn't care if it ever bloomed, the blooms are just a bonus... well, with those orange-red flowering episcias, I really don't care if they bloom! I'm just not fond on the color. I have a couple of orange-red flowering Episcias that I got in trades, and I have to say that the foliage is too stunning to worry about the bloom color. On the other hand, my 'Teddy Bear' E. bloomed a couple of weeks ago, and the hot pink bloom just knocked my socks off!

20. fiery Columnea Lava Flow

argh. one of my favorites and I don't have a good photo!

I can only find a bad shot of buds :-(

This one is a hybrid and I think one of the best orange-red-yellow flowered columneas.

Leaves are hairy and buds are fuzzy....and what else... I think that's it.

Thumbnail by Keyring
Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Dang, I had the last two and thought I was on a roll... but no Columnea on my card!

That's OK, I'm feeling lucky tonight anyway... I don't mean to change the subject, so please don't comment about it on this thread, but if you want to know if we "got lucky" then check this thread tomorrow evening, http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/640695/

Drumheller, Alberta, Canada(Zone 3a)

I only have 5 more to go for a Bingo!
XXX crossing fingers LOL

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

ROFL...I don't know how this happened, but I only have 4 to go...~:-)

Have to go get more printer paper today since I have printed out every description, I feel a new addiction coming on...............Lauri

16. old time favorite Sinningia eumorpha

I think this used to be grown a lot more than it is now. It's growing on me :-)

A compact plant, it grows well next to the AVs. I has glossy green leaves which are really quite amazing, and slipper-type flowers in white and pinks.

As mentioned in one of the links below, it is one of the parents of many of the mini sinningia hybrids (the other parent being a micro mini like pusilla or concinna).

This photo is of a first or second bloom on a seedling - I didn't think much of it at the time. But the next time it bloomed, I had something like 8-10 flowers and each one was much bigger and a bit frilly - quite a show!

okay, we are truckin' along. It can't be too long now........

30. sedum-y Streptocarpus saxorum

This is yet another of the streptocarpella subfamily - in other words, it has stems, whereas what we usually think of as a Streptocarpus is more of a rosette (and is in the streptocarpus subfamily of streptocarpus).

I have a small pot of it, but I'm too lazy to take a picture. Mine doesn't have flowers, anyway.

http://gesneriads.ca/strep242.htm

Doesn't it look like sedum?

I love your honesty, Key! Re: "too lazy to take a picture" LOL I love it! ;o)
This has been such a fun AND educational time! Thank you so much!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Well, today really was my lucky day!!! I got both Bingo calls, too. *snoopy dance*

23. compact breeding Kohleria Laura

Kohlerias are being bred for more compact growth habits and smaller size. Laura is one of these. (But Flirt, which is the tiny one on the right, is a true mini.)

Here's another photo: http://www.gesneriads.ca/kohleri6.htm

(As an aside, my friend got a cutting of Flirt - seems like a super floriferous one!!!! I'm rooting it for her, after which she gets it back to grow, and I have first dibs on extra rhizomes....)

got it, what a beauty

my lucky day - I've got both of them

Drumheller, Alberta, Canada(Zone 3a)

Kohleria Laura is gorgeous! Wish It was on my card!
I only have 4 more to go! But this has been so much fun......I don't really want it to end! :0)

Madison, WI(Zone 4b)

Could I tell you which 3 to call tomorrow? Only Kidding! :)

Those kohleria are beautiful. I now have two of the compact ones and 15+ sinningias. They are pushing my violets off of the shelves.

24. why do I grow this? Koellikeria erinoides

okay, so this is now called something else. It's been moved in the genus Gloxinia, so it is now Gloxinia erinoides.

I am posting a photo of a seed pot! Is this exciting or what????

roflol.

Now that I've bothered to look at photos online again, I'm not sure why I decided that it would be a good idea to sow this one.....

well a species is always interesting in a botanical sense, I suppose... and there is some variation in the species, which is a good thing.

http://www.gesneriads.ca/koell02.htm

supposedly supposed to smell like coconut...?

Thumbnail by Keyring
DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

come on guys... only 8 more calls to go! surely someone must be really really close?

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Gosh, I still have four to go :(

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I like the colors in those seedlings... Can you smell any coconut? I grew out some Chocolate Daisy seeds this year, and there is no discernable chocolate scent to them.

I guess yesterday was just luckier than today for me... I've got 2 left on my card but didn't have either of today's picks.

Caistor, United Kingdom(Zone 8b)

I have 3 to go...espespespespesp.....LOL I even got caught up on my printouts...Lauri

Drumheller, Alberta, Canada(Zone 3a)

I still have 4 to go.
