are we ready? September bingo !!

Cincinnati, OH

I have been down to one since she called 16.....I thought sure I was going to win for my Bday!! It must not be my game. I am not a lucky type winner, skill games are more my style! LOL

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I think everyone is going to win together, and I'll have to send out prizes to everyone ;P

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Woo Hoo, way to go Kelly. Good Luck and Happy Belated Birthday!

9. perfect rosette Saintpaulia Orchard's Bumble Magnet

Was it about a year ago that I started getting rid of all my AVs? I kept just a few, and this was one of them. It's a mini, and has one of the neatest growth habits I have seen. The leaves - for the most part - stay flat. No suckering. The flowers are a glittery pink - so even though I don't like pink much, these flowers are pretty even to me.

This photo is of a relatively young plant - this one is easy to grow into a lovely show plant.

27. greenhouse weed Diastema vexans

I've been told that this is a weed in greenhouses..... It likes humidity, and is usually compact but can get tall and weedy. The flowers are tiny but have adorable splotches of color on each petal.

I grew mine from seed. It developed rhizomes and bloomed in its first growing season inside a plastic box. It then went dormant and is now in its second round. So far this summer, I've kept it in the open and the normal humidity here (which is slightly higher than most homes because I don't like AC very much) has been enough. It hasn't flowered yet this year, so I'll upload a boring photo of the foliage.

For the flowers, see http://gesneriads.ca/diaste12.htm
I think they are cuter - almost cuter than Chirita tamiana. (But I hear the foliage can get a bit bigger.)

Still have 2 to go here... I'll bet we have a "bingo!" today. :-)

Grand Forks, BC(Zone 5b)

Me too, Jill. I gotta agree with you...somebody out there must have it by now.

C'mon you guys, 'fess up!

Don Ü

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

I still have 3 to go, always just close enough to hope I might get it one day! LOL

K :~)

Homosassa, FL(Zone 9a)

got the first one today so i still have 2

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

I'm tempted to sit down and calculate the probability that everyone could have picked the last one I call.....

Or the probability that one person could have selected the last 6 items that I call.

wow.

25. narrow-leaved beauty Achimenes cettoana

This was the first achimenes I ever tried to grow. I - of course - started it from seed. haha. Still hasn't bloomed because I keep letting the thing dry out. I'll upload a pic of it in its seed pot - it's the one in the center, top row.

Oh, clockwise from top left:
Sinn cardinalis
Achimenes cettoana
Kohleria Manchu
Nematanthus brasiliensis
Chirita latifolia
Begonia venosa

This is another gessie that makes scaly rhizomes, so when it dies back, you should NOT throw out the pot.

It's one of the most compact growing in the genus, if I remember correctly.

New thing I learnt today.... I thought all scaley rhizomes need to be kept moist through dormancy. Apparently not. Kohlerias need to be kept moist, but Achimenes should be kept dry or they will rot.

Photo of cettoana: http://gesneriads.ca/achime75.htm

And while we're on the topic of achimenes, This guy has a ton of photos and apparently hybridizes quite a bit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/15701185@N00/

Boo Hiss, Nancy. Just Kidding. Congratulations. Maybe I will win 2 or 3. Maybe I will be the only one left with 1.......Who cares? This is so much fun. I have really learned a lot on this bingo. Thanks so much to keyring.

Kelly

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

well there will be at least 4 winners, possibly more if there are joint winners.

I have quirky rules, remember? haha.

Madison, WI(Zone 4b)

I am now a member of 3 AV groups and I always seem to win Bingo the second time I play. I never win again so no one has to worry about me anymore!
I am going to assume that someone will let me know who I have to send postage to.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Congratulations, Nancy!!!

I've still got 2 to go...

DC metro, VA(Zone 7b)

Nancy - no postage this time! I thought it only fair because I wasn't able to tell folks what the prizes would be.

31. lithophytic Streptocarpus gardneri

I had assumed this was an accepted species, but I don't see it in the World Checklist of Gesneriaceae, which is sort of the authority....

My favorite photo of it is this one. I think some of you know that I grow orchids at least as much as gessies, so I am really into the epiphytic and lithophytic growth habit.

by the way, photo update. I took a pic of Sinningia eumorpha today, which is the one that was crossed with micro sinningias to make mini sinningia hybrids.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Wonderful photos! Love the polka dotted seedlings... and I definitely need to add a sinningia (or two) to my shelf; those blooms are just lovely!

One to go..... *fingers crossed*

Dunedin, FL(Zone 10b)

Congratulations Nancy ! It was a fun Bingo to watch with all the pretty pictures and explanations !

26. silver velvet Sinningia leucotricha

This one is like opera - you either love it or hate it.

I got what I thought might be a leucotricha as one of the seedlings in the new members' mixed seed package of the AGGS. BUT, on it's second growth cycle, it formed two layers of leaf rosettes, so no..... it can't be leucotricha. It's probably a hybrid. I now have a small pot of seedlings growing.

The fuzzy silver leaves are just stunning. I love this plant.

I think this is my favorite photo of it: http://192.192.42.4/~tbgweb/cgi-bin/topic.cgi?forum=16&topic=6408&show=50

Another photo: http://gesneriads.ca/sinnin42.htm

I have a pot of seedlings from AGGS or GHA labeled leucotricha, but they look like this right now. Think the leaves will turn silver as they age...? or when they are older?
