Wakey, wakey! A fine good morning to you all. Hope the day proves fair to all my DG friends.
Here's where we came from http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/648401/
Coffee and ....... for Friday, September 8th
McCool, feeling much better, or I wouldn't have been in the kitchen today. I sure hope you get the chance to make the roasted tomato sauce. It is heavenly. I am like you, ice cream doesn't really do much for me. Just give me the salty snacks, and a beer occasionally, and I am a happy camper!!
Well, I said an hour ago I was going to bed, well I lied. Not feeling sleepy enough, but I think I feel the first drooping eyelids. Don't ever care for worms for breakfast, but it the time is correct, I may just qualify for it. Maybe I can find a critter who would enjoy it more.
Well, I am really gone now, you all have pleasant dreams, and hope you awake refreshed.
~~~~ to you hope, have a good friday also.
Hi Folks,
Well, woke up early, but later than the last fewe days, so I guess I'm getting close to being adjusted to the time difference. The guys will have breakfast here. Marilyn has accepted an invitation to join my aquafitness group for breakfast out a little later.
McCool, I think our friends will be good house guests and I suspect that Marilyn will help me get the tomates canned. Tomorrow, I have plans for part of the afternoon as the luthier who made my viola is having an open house - concert to celebrate his collaborration with a Toronto area string shop which is expanding to Ottawa. We need a shop like that in town as the present one that is closest to that doesn't have quality and luthiers like Guy are constantly called upon to fix the things that people bought at the other shop. And I'll deal with leaving them on Sunday evening when I have my first orchestra rehearsal of the season a bit later. DH heads out of town tomorrow evening.
Gonna go now and re-organize my freezer so that I can get everything into it and fetch a salmon filet to poach for dinner this evening.
Defoe - I agree. While I finished my sauce on the stovetop, it was mostly oven roasted and tastes really good.
Have a good day.
Ann
Good Morning...
I was awake in the middle of the night but couldn't access DG, and still not even at 7:30 when I got up. Glad it's back up or I'd be having withdwrawal pains!
My job list for today includes finding the closest dental school! The second round of antibiotics are gone and the bad tooth is acting up. Unless the dentist here gets another cancellation, it's 10 days to my appointment. Plus I have several front teeth that are broken off or chipped although no pain so far. I look like a hag. (and feel like it some days!)
Also have to go to Lowe's for all the electrical stuff to pre-wire my "building to be". Today is the last day to use my 10% off coupon. I had thought it expired yesterday but I didn't have my list complete.
I got a lovely house warming box of perennial plants yesterday from BlueSpiral, and should have a big box today of my own plants from MollyMc. Plus, someone I don't even know, PollyK, has a box in the mail to me. Guess I will be busy! I have 300 seedlings of Canterbury Bells I started last month and they need to get in the ground too if I can get my helper to come and till in the compost in my garden bed. I plan to sell them as cut flowers next spring.
It's time do do another application of Messenger, time for a haircut, time for...yada yada yada. Never seems to be enough time!
Have a wonderful day, BBL
Morning!! I wasn't in the mood for a worm this morning, so I'll gladly let Ann have it. Have a tee time at 9ish so I can't dawdle much. I had the same adjustment problems when we came back from Australia, my internal clock was messed up for about a month. Funny, I adjusted quickly after we got there. Once we got back home I was getting sleepy at all the wrong times, and not at bed time. I wouldn't have traded that trip for anything else though, I had a wonderful time and our friends were the best possible hosts.
Elaine, I smiled when I read the "one clove of garlic" in the tomato recipe, I'd likely chuck in the entire bulb for that large a batch of sauce. Tomatos have been poor everywhere I think. Probably the hot weather caused the thick skins, and here, at least, the heavy rain caused them to split. But, like Maria said, there's always the farmer's market. We have the space for a good sized vegetable garden but I've thought about how much work it is when everything starts getting ripe and that stops me from doing it.
I've been dithering about what to do with my wagon filled with strawberry plants. They've grown beautifully, right through the slats on the sides and down to the ground.....but they needed a better situation to survive the winter. So, in an effort to save myself some work, I decided to pull the wagon right over to the new spot by the japanese maple and hardy hibiscus where they are protected from the fierce winter weather and transfer them one by one. I had pulled out all the snapdragons, and cleared the way for the strawberries. Simple, yes?
When I grabbed the handle on the wagon, it resisted and I thought it was just kind of stuck from sitting there all summer. Gave it another good tug, and PLOP pulled the front wheels and most of the bottom right off the back wheels. I had lined it with a heavy duty plastic, but too much rain did the poor old thing in. So here's what's left of my little red wagon. LOL Ended up doing a lot more work than if I had lifted them out of it one by one. DH had said earlier this week he was going to paint it and I said I liked it kind of faded and old looking....too bad I didnt let him do it LOL then he would have had the mess!!
WS what a kind and generous person to donate FFmiles for you to use. Your DS will be so happy to have you there with her. What a tough time she's having, you will be a great comfort to her. On a brighter topic, wouldn't it be fun to have the time and money to do the rehab on that charming old house? It would be like what Dorothy is doing on their place, except for moving the entire building.
Gave the peaches a little squeeze this morning....one more day and they'll be perfect. There'll be a mess in my kitchen for sure. I have those nice raspberries my neighbor brought over, so I'm going to make two batches of jam at the same time, and try to blend the peach and raspberry in layers just for fun. If it works, I'll take a picture.....LOL
Hope Dcat, Suzi and Maria are all feeling better today. And the same for anyone else who is under the weather. No time to be sick, fall is creeping up on us like a mugger!!
Time to hit the shower ~~~~ to all, bbl, off to golf this morning. We have three weeks left, because we have to play the games that were rained out.
Sheila
Oh de poor widdle wagon! such a sad site....
Not in the mood to write at the present time. BBL with the latest news. It's a show stopper, ha! (said sarcastically)
Laura
Sheila, all I can say is OOPS !
Meant to add what else I did, something I did not plan but my sweet daughter stopped by at noon betwen her appointments with students in town, we had lunch together, it was the brightest spot of the day for me
Now I have to do some cleaning like dusting and vacuuing before the house gets too dirty but do not feel like it
Ann, it takes me forever to get used to MY time or ThEIR time when ever I travel
bbl
Edited to say to Darius, I cannot understand why you have to wait so long to get to the dentist, If I had that kind of problem mine would consider it an emergency and take me in right away.. This is awful
This message was edited Sep 8, 2006 10:14 AM
Better late than never. I had an early dentist appointment this morning, and after that went to WalMart to pick up some craft things. Just got home.
I got the permanent bridge in today, and everything feels good. Only one other procedure needed, and that will be next year sometime. Then I am good until the next dental emergency.
DH had pulled some beets, so when I got home, put them on to cook. He wants some canned, just to have buttered. So will do that this afternoon.
I need to finish a bird bath that I am making for a neighbor's birthday, hope to get that done sometime this weekend.
DGD is coming late this afternoon for the weekend, so it will be a busy weekend.
Not gonna take time to comment right now, as the beets are on, and need tending to. Will come back later. Just ~~~~ for right now.
Hi everyone! Back at work today and feeling pretty good. Was there a full moon last night? Been getting lots of crazy calls today.
Defoe - that pot-luck sounds yummi! We used to have one every christmas at church, but membership has gotten so small that they no longer do it.
Darius - Hope you get that dentist appt.
M5 - Hope you didn't lose any plants in the "crash"
Ok, luch is here and I'm starving. BBL ~~~~~~~~~~
Maria, if I had an established relationship with the dentist here, I'm sure they'd fit me in for an emergency. As it is, I am, or will be, a new patient and their waiting list is long. Plus, I'm an Outsider, having just moved here where everyone knows everyone and is likely related. The 2 rounds of antibiotics have largely kept it in check.
Got my list, went to Lowe's for most of it and used my coupon. Have a few materials yet to get but the money my sister left for the project is running low, and they can wait. Like a door for the building! Stopped at the grocery on the way home and got a few things I can fix for my brother who is likely coming Sunday or Monday.
Gotta put away groceries, start some of them cooking, then start a dental school search.
BBL
Hi folks,
Sheila, The similar recipe which I found for oven roasted tomato sauce called for a “head” of garlic, which I would interpret to be the whole bunch or at least 8 or 9 cloves. So that is what I did with mine. I have my vegetable garden, but no longer try to grow enough of anything to preserve it. I’m happy with enough for us to eat from time to time and I especially like my cherry tomatoes. There is nothing like a tomato right off the vine. However, at this time, I have severely pruned all my plants. If they haven’t set good sized tomatoes by now, there isn’t a chance that they will ripen before we have a frost and those that DO ripen in late September never taste as good any way.
Bonnie - you say you don’t go to many pot-luck dinners but you seem to get to more than most. And they sound great.
Darius - sure hope you are able to get care for that tooth soon.
Visiting friend and I had breakfast with the Aquafit bunch and had a good time. Then we hit the $ store and she found lots of things not available in Newfoundland. Since they have their car, having driven their son to university, she’ll be able to take things back home with her. Once back home, I got the tomatoes canned - 13 ½ pint jars and the rest of the tomato sauce into jars which, once cool, I will freeze - another 7 pints in addition to the 6 pints I froze last night. Poached a large salmon trout filet for dinner and then decided, while I had a good court bouillon, to poach the salmon filet I had in the freezer as well. We’ll have one for dinner cold and I’ll divide the other up for future use for us. Have a strawberry-rhubarb crisp which needs to be finished.
It’s getting dark here. Quite warm and humid today and a good possibility of a thunder storm this afternoon.
Well, off to be productive and maybe practice a bit while our friends have gone out to do some errands. Have the first orchestra rehearsal on Sunday evening and it’s about time I tried to figure out which end of the viola fits under my chin.
BBL, I hope.
Ann
Well it turned into a gorgeous late summer day so i'm washing bedding and hanging it out. Who knows how many nice days are left? I'm doing comforters and covers and mattress pads and the whole thing. It's always nice to have all that fresh smell captured for a little while!
Still have been dreading picking tomatoes. They did well here! I hit them with fungicide at the first sign of blight, and that got them through the initial cold wet weather. I'm going to roast some - I promise!! I've done enough of everything else with them.
I could weed the garden too and start pulling stuff. Crock pickles came out good, could start another batch of those too...hmmm.....or loaf.....
darius-ouch still on the tooth, you'll be good once you have some relationships built up within the community. When I call a plumber or heater guy, they drop what they're doing and come = and I really appreciate it, but we have good relationships that go back years. The first years were hard. Try to get a heater guy at 2am when it's 30 below zero and nobody knows you! (Or, rather, don't!!). Even so I would think a dentist would fit you in...it's really bothering me!!
suzieq-glad you're feeling better!!
Maria-Glad to hear you had a nice surprise visit with DD and do keep taking it easy if you can!
Back to laundry~~~~to everyone elsee, BBL
DMC - and Darius - the dentist thing bothers me too. 10 days is a long way off. Hope you are successful in your search for a dental school.
Ann
Not doing so good on dental schools. Only one in Virginia, clear across the state in Richmond. TN has only one, in Memphis, and NC has one in Chapel Hill. All of them are at least a day's drive from here. more to Memphis. Arrgggh.
Look what was on my doorstep when I got home! It was so heavy I had to unload part of it to lift it. It's some of my plants that were at MollyMc's. Wonder how she got it to the post office? It was 30 pounds!
Oh, saw my first snake a few minutes ago in the front yard by the house. I was dragging the hose around to fill the duck pool for the plants Molly sent. Good thing I had boots on as I almost stepped on it. Small snake, maybe 30 inches, tan with 2 white stripes down the back. Yuck.
Well, I lost a nice long post awhile ago, and hope this one makes it.
What kind of snake would that be, Darius? Whatever it is, we don't have them here. That's quite a box of plants, something more to take your mind off your tooth.
Hmmm, wondering if Kooger is jobless now?
I'm busy running down to the vegie garden, change the water, back up to the house, a few minutes later I go do it again. It's good exercise but Fritz and I already walked a mile and a half this morning.
The wind came up a couple of hours ago, not what we needed with all the fires. Tomorrow I get to drive past a bunch of them on my way to Boise, taking my hubby to the airport again. He's gonna have a lot of frequent flier miles.
I'm gonna post this and see if it makes it. See you later.
My tomatoes are roasting, OMG it smells heavenly, I am going to have to sneak down and taste them pretty soon. Maybe I'll skim some and make a pizza to cook along with them.
GOOD GRIEF......what's wrong with this site today!! I've been trying to get on since 6:30 this morning!!! Takes 5 min to load a page. At first I thought it was MY computer but I can get on other sites with no problem - I tell ya it has ruined my day!!!
You'd think that I would have gotten a ton of things done as I wasn't on the computer, but every 30 min. I'd come in and try it again....This has been the most frustrating day - computer wise...
Made it to huff/puff and did a good work out (measured by the sweat rolling down my face!) Went and did the dreaded grocery shopping. Got several treats for myself too!! While I was shopping I felt so dizzy, so I stopped at Wendy's and got a couple of pieces of chicken. I hadn't had much protein today and thought I needed some. Felt better, but it took several hours.
Now I don't plan on lifting a finger- I'm gonna spend hours on here LOL
M5- aww poor wagon....glad you got the strawberries moved. Hope the golf game was a good one!!
Darius- maybe you should call the dentist back and plead for an appointment...say you are in unbearable pain.....This has gone on a long time.... Yahoo- boxes of plants!! But yuck on the snake. Hopefully I am done with planting. The weatherman just came on and said there is a freeze warning for Michigan (not here thank goodness....) But it will be here before we know it. Tomorrow and Sunday our highs are supposed to be in the 60's...brrr it was 83 today.
Tomorrow we have to travel over an hour to see DGS first football game. Gonna wear my long johns I think! He's only in 4th grade, and I think traveling for football at that age is totally stupid, but I will keep my mouth shut and go and cheer him on!! Rah Rah Rah, sis boom ba
Just got a call that DIL's grandma just passed away. She has been in hospice for three weeks and it was just a matter of time. I was going down to see her on Sun- I'm sorry I didn't go last weekend now.
Well, dinner time so have to go. MISSED you all terribly!!! Hope I don't have any more trouble....was I the only one?
Well, I FINALLY reached PatiSchell. Called the DIL who lives in the same house and they took the phone over to Pati so I could talk to her.
She's doing fair to middlin' but has turned off her phone because of being muddled by all the drugs. Her CT Scan is next Monday and surgery about a week later. She wasn't sure of the date but her daughter has all the info and has been taking care of her in the evenings, plus taking her to all the appointments.
She thanks everyone and says when she's well and has her computer back, y'all will see her back on DG!
Sarv, looks like we've ALL had trouble with DG in the last 18 hours.
Well, I too have had a terrible time with DG ... running in and out to check but it just hasn't been worth the effort, so finally gave it up and got lots accomplished today. :-) Made a wonderful chicken divan using Darius' homemade mushroom soup recipe. :-) I made a lot of substitutions in the recipe as my DH is lactose intollerant and thought it turned out pretty good. :-) Got the laundry monster back under control and the kitchen beast murdered again after all that cooking. Have watered the plants and even pinched back a few that needed it.
Won't try to comment tonight as I'm afraid this might go poof so am just going to ~ for now. Sleep tight!
~Elaine~
Hi folks,
Everyone else here had pooped out on me and I'm about to join them.
I also found it difficult, at times, to access parts of DG today.
Sarv - glad you had a good work out. We took a two mile hike after dinner over to the local drug mart to get some ice cream to go with the rhubarb-strawberry crisp that I made. And the poached fish (did I tell you I planned to do that?) was really good. A salmon trout and it was delicious. Made a sauce with many chopped garden herbs (tarragon, parsley, garlic and regular chives, lemon basil and regular basil), some chopped capers, half a pickled jalapeno pepper, all mixed with half fat-free yoghurt and half lite mayonnaise with some dijon mustard and lemon juice. Yummy!
Well, must get to bed. Hope you all have a good night.
Ann
I have not been using the computer all day so I do not know of any problems seems fine now.
Mary, thinking of you and all the fires near you, heard from Ponditus she has to keep in doors , smoke is heavy out side and with her Asthma she can hardly breath if she goes out,
Been busy all day, you know the kind when you start something then stop because you see something else that needs to be done and so on and so on finally did get everything finished before I gave up -)
Good night al till tomorrow.
Good evening all,
I think that just about everyone has had difficulty with DG today, though I found that I had even more trouble when trying to access it with Firefox (the browser that I use 99% of the time) and had to use IE to get here at all.
Had a nice surprise this morning. The first call of the day at my store was from Joyous who has had a better selling season this year than the last one or two. Luckily there were no customers in the store at that time so we were able to have a good chat.
V-ann, glad that the houseguests turned out to be assets rather than problems despite your usual busy schedule. Have you forgiven your DH yet for issuing the invitation without checking with you? The salmon dinner sounded great. I love it, but my DH seems to take a dim view of that and swordfish (two of my favorites, of course).
Bonnie and Maria, glad that you're both feeling better , but I don't think it's a good idea for either of you to try to do too much too soon. Pretty sure that that's going to fall on deaf ears as far as Bonnie's concerned, but hope that you'll continue to take it easy, Maria!
darius, I'll join the chorus ----- hate to see you continuing to suffer with that tooth and I'm sure that it's absolutely no good for your general health either. I don't see you as the reticent type, but perhaps you do have to be a bit MORE emphatic in order for a dentist to squeeze you in on an emergency basis.
Sheila, wow, the weather certainly did do a number on that ex-wagon! Glad that you rescued the strawberries. I've been wondering if I should try to dig mine out of the strawberry pot and get them into the ground, but am afraid that I'd tear up the roots too much in the process anyway.
kooger, please don't keep us in suspense too long! You've got us all wondering what's afoot.
Hi to I01, suzieq, Mary, dmcd, and anyone else who's been lurking out there. Hope you all have a peaceful night and sweet dreams. I'll be back in a minute with the link to tomorrow's thread.
Here you go folks, your express ticket to tomorrow.
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/649051/
I gave up even trying to get on after this morning. Now it's too late and I'm on my way to bed. See you in the morning.
Sheila
Well, I am back again. I didn't even try to get on here today. I have made 2 posts and didn't have any problem. However, if I had been trying and having problems, I would have been frustrated. I am a type A personality, and whereas type B's only press the elevator button once, I press it numerous times to help speed it up! Just think what torture that I saved this keyboard from today!!.
I got the beets canned, had 7 pints. These will be used for buttered beets, as I have already pickled some. I had to go to the attic to drag out the canning equipment that I had already stored. When it goes up this time, it will stay there until next summer.
M5, sorry about the little wagon. It died a sudden death. I was hoping that I could see some pics next year of what you had put in it.
Darius, I think that you are gonna have to call that dentist and use more force to get that appointment moved up. This has gone on long enough. My dentist today congratulated me on the tough road the last 8 months, and how well I had handled it. I got the permanent bridge today, and it is feeling good. Only 1 more dental problem to fix, probably next year, and that's the last of the major work, until the next dental emergency. I am bound and determined to leave this world with a whole set of teeth, whether mine, or imitations inserted. No dentures here for me, please.
Susieq, glad that the yukkies left, and you are feeling better and back to work.
Mary, I hope that you don't get to close to the fires as you travel tomorrow. Fritz sounds like a super little dog. I know being a terrier, he enjoys his walks with you, and helping with the watering.
Viann, glad the company is the kind that is good to have. I hate the kind where you feel you have to wait on them hand and foot. Sounds like you got a bunch of tomatoes canned. Good for you. I don't think you have forgotten which end of the instrument you need to put under your chin!!
Sarv, sorry that the computer problems annoyed you today. Hope that it is smooth sailing tomorrow.
I01, yep, it is confirmed, take away our computers and we do get a lot accomplished. Glad that the laundry monster, and the kitchen monster got near fatal wounds from you today.
dmc, don't those roasted tomatoes smell good. I wish I could create an air freshner with that scent. Glad you got all the bedding washed and hung out. I hope I have time to do that before winter.
Maria, sure glad to hear that you are well enough to puttering around. Makes no difference what you are doing, it just shows that you are feeling better. Now don't work too hard, ya hear?
McCool, why didn't you warn me earlier about working too hard? Yep, I did. Feeling almost back to normal, with the exception of a lingering cough. Still have cough medicine, and the drug to loosen the phlem?? I sure hope you get the strawberries in the ground, as I don't think they will fare too good in the strawberry pot overwinter. That is the next thing we need to do. Weed the strawberries, move some runners, and mulch them good.
M5, how did your golf game go today? Sorry about that recipe mistake, instead of 1 clove, I meant the whole thing, the whatchamacallit. I am planting some garlic this fall, as I seem to be always having it on my grocery shopping list. Surely, I can raise just enough to keep this household going.
I made spaghetti tonight with my homemade sauce and DGD gave it a "2 thumbs up". Although I have to tell you, that is not a good indication of it's worth. DGD is the female version of "Mikey". She will eat anything. Well, almost, beets and sweet potatoes are not on her "to eat list".
Had to have a pitty party tonight after supper. DGD's hamster died this week and she is heart broken. She told me how she buried her, and the markers she made to mark the grave. For a hamster, it had a good long life, 5 years.
Mr. B. has something going on with both his ears. They have sores in them, and he is scratching them. So DGD and I got him corraled tonight, cleaned them, and put some antibiotic salve on them. Sure hope that we can get them cleared without a vet visit.
Kooger, don't keep us hanging, what is the show stopper news?
Well, have pool school tomorrow in Louisville, about an hour away. It starts at 10.00, so will be doing that first thing. May try to check in before I leave, if not, when I get back.
Hope you all have a good night. Hope, where are you? ~~~ to you, and any others I might have missed. Good night all.
Say Goodnight, Gracie.
