Nocturnal Bug Busting

Philadelphia, PA(Zone 6b)

Now my neighbors really think I went to the plants..lol. I've started a nightly routine of catching the slugs..you know..flashlight in hand and container..glove on one hand..he he! Last night I actually screached (wow, I hope no one heard me) because during the intense search of catching slugs, one managed to crawl out of the container and onto my ungloved hand...OHHHH YUCKKKKK! I guess it could be worse but now my kids want to do science experiments with the caught slugs. What are we coming to now..lol..?
I average about 10 mammoth slugs a night and I see that the Japanese beetles are only attacking my catmint, spearmint and yellow loostrife. Anyone up for slug and beetle marmalade..lol.

Trish I have lost count of the times I've been out at midnight collecting the slugs. But I could never kill them, just used to throw them over the hedge into the graveyard...lol!! I'm sure they used to come back the little devils and serves me right!! I was moving some plants last night into a shadier spot and a frog jumped out and onto my hand - I nearly died and think I woke up the whole neighbourhood!! Ah the joys of gardening!! And you can keep your marmalade thankyou!!

Help with your slugs....put some beer in a shallow dish and place by plants...they crawl in but can't stagger out. Another thing you can do is use crushed up egg shells and place around your plants...they don't like the roughness.

Take the salt shaker with you slug hunting; a sprinkle or two and they dissapear before your eyes.

Careful Dicentra - a gal wrote me one time and said she was out in the middle of the night with a pair of scissors snipping slugs when her neighbors called the cops. She said she was mighty embarrassed when they showed up! There she was... scissors and flashlight in hand... wearing her bathrobe and slippers!

Okay I'll make you feel better...my brother goes on his nocturnal slug hunting forays in his pajamas and wearing a miners headlamp....imagine what HIS neighbors must think!!!!LOLOLOL!

Oh my gosh..I'd never want to be caught in my jammies outside..lol. Anyway, I am clothed when on the hunt..he he. I think I'll use the salt shaker, at the protests of the kids. We do use all of our egg shells and sweet gum seed pods for the hosta and annual beds...no slug activity there. The wooded path that was just put in through the wildflowers and lined with logs seems to be the slug haven. Oh, the miner's hat sure does sound tempting, too...lol.
