September buds and blooms

Trelleborg, Sweden

My one week old cutting of H. tomataensis seems to want to bloom AND the peduncle seems to want to root!

And here's a newly opened chlorantha var. tutuilensis.

Very pretty blooms. Oh I am waiting very patiently for my chlorantha just to get a peduncle, it is soooo pretty Christina. Hey are you gonna try to root that peduncle to see what happens? How funny is that, very cool picture.

Mark your subquintuplinervis is really pretty, congrats on your bloom.

H.subquintuplinervis has been slow as mollasses up until now, slow growing and the buds took a month to mature, but when the flowers started opening last night they flew open! The first picture (above) I took the second I noticed them starting to open. An hour later the were fully reflexed. The scent also changed- it was slighly camphory at first, once they fully opened they were dripping with nectar and smelled exactly like freshly ground nutmeg. The scent dosen't carry, I couldn't smell it in the room, but it is quite strong when you get your nose near the blossoms.

Veeeeeeeeeeeery pretty! Mine keeps getting to just that point, then nothing! What am I doing wrong?? It's growing, it's healthy, I got rid of the mealies, it' has "buds" like crazy, and then the flop!

Becky, the only suggestion I can make to you is to keep the soil very moist, and keep it in really bright light. Mine is an EA plant, which I normally replant in more free-flowing soil as soon I get it home, but this one is such a water hog, I left it in the EA soil -- and I still have to water the darn thing every two days during summer. So, don't let it get even remotely dry - keep it consistently moist and the buds won't drop. By the way, I learned this because I was having the same trouble as you, so I upped the watering and now it's a maniac!

Ann, thanx for the advice, I thought I was over watering it! :) I am still learning which ones wants what!

Yes, I find mulitflora is one of those ones that do great in a self watering pot and keeping the bottom reservoir full for it.

Ooooh, keep your fingers crossed for me ...

My H. blashernaezii (thanks to Oregon's own Mrs. Clause a while back), has developed a peduncle and has buds!!!

Now if I can just keep from fussing over it ...

Kewl, Ann. My blashernaezii (I called it the 'blastednazi') just keeps blooming and blooming and blooming. You will love it.

Yes, Annie, it does look like it is probably a pachyclada, according to the experts consensus. David Liddle agrees with you, and since I did buy it as pachyclada (duh, mark) pachyclada it is! So it looks like I had them mixed up, and subquintuplinervis is actually the smaller leaved version. Here's a comparison photo from David. He say subq has a much thicker leaf. Thats amazing, as the pachyclada that I have has the thickest, must succulent leaf I've ever seen on a Hoya. Does anyone have a bonafide subq. and a pachyclada? I'd love to see comparison shots of the leaf thickness.

I accidently broke off an umbel of caudata and took some shots on different surfaces to see how the white flowers came out... Here they are on a white shelf and they look sort of "dirty" white.

On the window board and now they look "cleaner"!

On a huge green leaf they look more "natural"...

In the end they ended up on Tofflans head, because she was soooo curious of what I was doing!

Christina, that Wightii var. palniensis is STUNNING!! Another one for the Gimme list. I love the photo with the caudata blooms on Tofflan's head - reminds me of drawings from fairy tales.

OOOO....just beautiful. I adore that picture of the flower on Tofflans head. I think you should send that in to the very next photo contest you come upon. It is SURE to win. Thanks for sharing as always.

September has been pretty good to me... Now that it's cooled off, it seems quite a few Hoyas are blessing me with blooms. H. DS-70 (I have two big ones) are bursting with blooms, kentiana (ssp. wayetti??) has started, lacunosa is slowly coming around with a bloom here and there, kerrii continues it's 3 month blooming vigil as does carnosa rubra (both have been aggressive bloomers all summer.) My pubicalyx (Pink Silver or Splash) has started to set several buds - seems like every time I moan about this one being stingy, it tries to prove me wrong by going into a bloom cycle! Fungii gave me my first bloom that started over 2 weeks ago and still looks fresh - I'm in awe of how long the flowers last.

Love looking at all your flowers! Gives me hope for the ones that are stubborn for me.
