September buds and blooms

San Francisco, CA

Carol, could that orangey one be a clone of buengetuensis (sp?).

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Hmmmm Mark...good question. I shall have to compare leaves and dig for flower pics.

Ann...H. retusa totally stumped me until I ignored it!!! I am afraid I tend to 'hover'..."Latent Jewish Mother Syndrome' - aka LJMS. EAT, DRINK you'll feel better! Sadly, it doesn't work for many hoyas (nor people!!!) and I am in a recovery program at the moment....involving cattleprods when I even look at the hose!!! I am having the SAME success (at the moment) with H. kanyakumariana, H. acicularis (aka H. teretefolia) and H. polyneura.

Carol

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Oy gevalt... cattleprods! But, those nice LJMS' are great people to visit when you're hungry, sick, feeling a little fahklumpt, or just need to kvetch - I've got a few in my life.

Anyway, it sounds like the H. retusa is the perfect hoya for those who don't fiddle with their plants constantly. Good to know.

Beautiful flowers and pictures, Carol and Christina!!

Very lovely flowers everyone. Carol, those leaves look just like my h.benguentensis too, so I'd guess that family as well.

Christine

Long Beach, CA

To me benguentensis and bordinii look VERY much alike in the leaves dept. I have not had a bloom on either as they are just little yet. However, the pictures of the flowers look alike to me too. What are the differences in these two?

How about that IML 0831 with same kind of leaves...?

Glad you liked Mathilde and Jennifer!

Christina

Long Beach, CA

I always drool over your flowers AND your photography Christina.
That little cv. Mathilde is just the cutiest thing. It looks like the corollas are wavy. Is that because it is not fully open, or are they really like that? I have a little cv. Mathilde and a little Jennifer, so when I see your pics, I am so encouraged to know what to expect some day.
Marcy

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Well...I am on an illusive track to ID the orangeish one. Will let you know.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Carol, you have "regular" mail!

Trelleborg, Sweden

Thank you, Marcy! Little cv. Mathilde is just opened in that photo. I'll see if I can take a new one tomorrow of the flowers fully opened.

Christina

San Francisco, CA

Aussie finaly mostly open- this is just the top half of the plant!

OH, Mark...the scent in your house must be heavenly!!!

MY big thrill is that a no name species hoya H. sp. IML 1391 IPPS 8898 finally bloomed and the fragrance is sweet but not cloying. I left it in the kitchen overnight and the next morning the light fragrance filled the air. The leaves are thin-ish, long a strappy and they turn reddish in high light. Here is the flower with the leaves.

And here is the flower. I am amazed at how well it came out...Bob wasn't even using a tripod.

Also with peduncles going to bloom are H. pauciflora, that H. "NOT" ovalifolia, H. sp. Thai #3, H. merrelii, H. fraterna, H. pottsii,......

Stunning! Now I see why I MUST have an Australis!!!

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh My GAWD Mark and Carol, those are BEAUTIFUL!! I'm with Becky ... I need an australis!
Ann

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

H. australis is a wonderful wonderful hoya!! It is healthy, strong, (for me) pest and disease immune, grows like a weed, blooms like there is no tomorrow. What else could we ask for? If any of you have a hoya that is totally hairless top and bottom (aka glabrous) called H. coronaria or H. keysii, chances are you have H. australis. CORRECTED TO SAY I AM WRONG... H. australis also comes in a variety of forms...and some are more pubescent than others. The glabrous leaf form is just one of them. What WAS I thinking?????? Sorry.

Just catching up, seems like I missed most of August blooms too. Just lovely blooms everyone. Mark your H. australis is really awesome. Wow I bet the smell is overwhelming.

Carol what is the update on the H. flagelleta sp. ? Really a cool looking bud.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Gotta ask DH.... I'll be back.

My Krimson Queen has its first flowers in two years! Also, H.Compacta continues its bloom fest.

That's not nearly as exciting as this little fella, H.Thomsonii's first buds on its first peduncle, and are finally big enough to get a little bit more excited about. The umbel is growing really really slowly....or is it just me....? Okay, I guess when one checks the umbel five times a day, it can seem slow....lol.... Anyway, here's its first portrait. The whole umbel is maybe 1/2" across and has been growing for at least six months....sorry, 2 weeks....

Why does it drop pictures like that?
Anyway, maybe it'll work this time.

Edited to say: I give up. Maybe DG's having a problem. I'll try later.

Oh Christine, that is exciting news about H. thomsonii, mine developed a peduncle this year too, and yes it is waaaay slow. LOL it could be because we check them 5 times a day !!! Congrats...

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Some more flowers coming along... H. pauciflora, H. pottsii, H. sp. KunmingKina...new ones every time I look around. Really seem to be turned on my the cooler nights.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

I've got my first flower on my variegated kerrii! Looks just like the green version....but still exciting!

Pretty bloom Awanda. I ended up throwing my small cutting of this hoya away. It never wanted to take off, so I gave it a small push . LOL

Christine, that is awesome. Yours is much further than mine. Keeping my fingers crossed for ya. It looks very promising. :)

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Oooh, pretty blooms Awanda!! I'm holding my breath for your buds, Christine.
Ann

San Francisco, CA

Thats great, Christine! What is that nifty looking tape stuff you have fastening the thomsonii to its bamboo?

Trelleborg, Sweden

Those thomsonii buds looks promising!

Here's the little cv. Mathilde after one week, not as green and getting as sticky as serpens.

No photo in the preview... seems the problem is back!

Hey Carol, what happened with H. flagellata?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Haven't beaten my husband hard enough. Got to see about that.... later. :)

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Tee Hee, that is funny Carol. I hadn't thought about it, but now that you mention it, H. flagellata is a rather odd name for a plant ...

Thanks Tammi, Ann, Mark and Christina. Having trouble walking with so many things crossed....lol...

Mark, that's Lee Valley Tools' Velcro Plant Tie - I just love the stuff - works forever and is forever reusable. Under $4 per roll. Here's a link to it - http://www.leevalley.com/garden/page.aspx?c=1&p=45293&cat=2,43319,33283&ap=1

Finally! H subquintuplinervis just started opening. So far a slight odor of band-aids!

Thumbnail by markroy68
San Francisco, CA

Sorry, not band-aids but camphor. I knew it was SOMEthing medicinal.

Long Beach, CA

LOL...I wondered about that. I thought, "band-aids"??? Who smells band aids? Ha Ha. I was about to run and get one to see what they smelled like.

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh How COOL, Mark. What gorgeous blooms. Although I am not sure the smell sounds all that delightful.
Ann

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Beautiful!!! Mine has not bloomed! Now I have a goal (if I can fine the darn thing!!!).

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

Really nice flower (and picture), Mark!! I have to add that one to my "wish list"! Karen
