Thanks Patricia. Will the Agarita grow in clay soil? Mine is very healthy, composted clay soil. Last weekend a nursery guy told me that Agarita won't grow in our area, which I found hard to believe. I thought hollies were hardy as the dickens? But if you think it won't transplant well into clay from your caliche soil, then perhaps it's best not to bring it for me. I'll defer to your advice.

Dallas RU and Plant Swap Oct8th, Trade Lists.
Carla, according to Howard Garrett, agarita will grow in any well-drained soil. It's a type of barberry, though it has holly-like leaves. I'm still hoping to get to the ranch before Sunday to look for one I can dig for you to try. There are hundreds, but most are way huge. They made no berries this year due to late cold and drought, but my husband is going to try to raise some from seed the next time he can harvest some.
By the way, American hollies 'won't grow' where I live, but the one I garnered in Louisiana a few years ago is doing well with its dose of Mir-Acid every now and then along with the southern magnolia from Georgia.
Sounds yummy Sylvia,
I'm bring Herb Garlic Bread o/~
Sheila~ I will help you with the door prizes, etc. Josephine said ya might need a hand.

Oh thanks Debbie, that will be a big help thanks!
Most of my salvia cuttings have not survived. It's been too hot perhaps. Every one I stuck in the spring rooted, so I am quite disappointed. I am bringing rooted divisions of those that reproduce that way and seedlings of some and extras of other plants.
That's weird - all of mine not only survived but they are up there blooming! They're in a greenouse too which is even warmer than outside. I used Josephine's cutting "recipe" and water DAILY - even if they don't look like they need it (I'll at least put it on high mist). Try again - it may seem like it's too late but mine rooted in days. Good luck!!!
Ok where is Josephine's cutting recipe...I would love to have it. Thank God all but a couple of the 40 some Coleus cuttings have made it, whew. I kept them in the shade and misted them several times a day (mother hen, lol).
Is there a hyperlink to the recipe?
Pat~ Ya might try again with the salvia it supposed to be below 90 from tomorrow on.
:oD
my beautyberry cuttings didn't make... I can't try again.... there aren't hardly any leaves left just berries on mine.
Rootinh Mix for Cuttings.
I use a soil mix for rooting plants that I or my husband blend at home.
2 parts cheap regular potting soil
2 parts peat moss
1 part perlite
This makes a very loose but water retentive soil that works great for rooting cuttings.
Take the cuttings from not too soft a growth, they should have some substance, it it is too soft it might not root.
The cuttings should have two or three leaf nodes, remove the leaves from the lower leaf nodes and from the second if it has three. If the top leaves are large you might want to cut those in half, if not leave them as they are.
Be sure that your cutting will have at least one set of leaf nodes in the soil.
I use the small styrofoam cups because they are deeper and also take less soil than the square ones.
Fill the cups to 1/4 inch of the top and water well. Insert your cuttings and water well again making sure to wet the cuttings leaves.
Put them in total shade, and water every day, if windy and extremely hot twice a day, do not let them dry out.
In two or three weeks they shoud be rooted, depending on the plant.
Well I hope that helps, let me know how it works out.
Josephine.
Thanks Josephine! That helps a lot. I am going to revise my mixture for the next batch of cuttings I need to do before winter.

You are welcome Deb, I am glad I finally put in a place where i could find it easily, in my diary page.
renatelynne, I read on a post on DG somewhere that layering worked great for BB. They said to grab a low limb and dig a hole where you can bury the middle section in the ground. At that point make a cut almost all the way through at an angle. Place a twig in the opening to hold it open, wet it and put root hormone on it, then bury it in the hole. Strip off the leaves just like you would if you were rooting normally. The branch will be supplied by the main plant enough until it can put out it's own roots, after which you can clip it and you have a new plant.
I haven't tried it yet, but I will in the Spring. I doubt it would do any good since it will be dormant soon.
thanks... I will try that in the spring also.
Alright took the day to get my plants ready chekc the list (second post on this thread and see if everything is there. debnes I would love to add some Lupine seeds if possible to my list from you.
Josephine - Greenie is not coming up can you Dmail me what she sent so we can work out a plan for getting her plants to her?
This is going to be good - I cannot wait to get out there Sunday.
Mitch, she will be here tomorrow to deliver her plants around noon, she is bringing her 9 year old son.
We plant to have a picnic lunch at the wildscape, look at the garden and then she will go back.
I think it will be a really nice day.
I am very excited too.
Josephine.
Thanks Josephine... I am just trying to figure out the DLs to her and the best way to handle it.
O/~ No prob Mitch, will save you some Lupine. I added it to my list above.
Deb
Thanks Deb - I am getting sooooooooooooooooooooo ready!
me too Mitch and YW!!,
A BST laid some eggs on the Rue Im trading lol ..... more ppl should have asked for some of that. I'm not sure I will be able to go back to Green Mama's before Sunday. And I may have one or 2 other plant additions as it is.
You can see one of the eggs there as she lays another near it.
Deb
eggs!!!! you lucky mama - congrats!
That is great Deb!!! Can't wait!
Renatelynne, my beautyberry is still fully leafed and doing well. If you'd like some cuttings, I can bring them on Sunday. I rooted one fall before last and got my cuttings mixed up. I thought it was a salvia until it bloomed the next spring and set berries!
I found two really interesting nurseries in Temple today and picked up another Black and Blue salvia after DH finished his tests at Scott and White. I have stuck new cuttings. I had whacked all the cuttings I could off my other one, but it will probably come back in the spring.
Tomorrow will be a full day of digging and potting and pie baking, but I am looking forward to Sunday!
I am planning on planning on coming to the swap with my daughters. Although my girls and I planted quite a few plants with the idea of bringing some of them to the swap the weather didn't cooperate. So my have list is sparse.
I don't have any wants but I have a few plants to give away.
Black Hollyhocks
Red Nasturtium
Very small ornamental cabbage seedlings
Coneflower (I think)
Fall aster
A few Clivia seedlings (but you really need to know how to care for them)
A variety of seeds
Oh! I almost forgot. What should I bring in the way of food?
Siggy - I would love a Black Hollyhock.
Food...
Anything! Veggie Tray, finger food, etc...
Mitch,
I'll save you a big one.
Siggy I would like a black Hollyhock too. :)
Iwill start packing up tommorrow ... and go get Ruby checked out. lol
G Siggy!
If ya have a Hollyhock left, I will take one of those...check my list and see if there is anything you would like, please!
Deb
Siggy, I will trade you for some of the cabbage seedlings please.
Sheila
I have 10 or so more Daylilies (most if not all named that I am bring looking for trades - if anyone is interested let me know.
I don't need any plants at this time thanks. But I want to re-mention that although I planted these seedlings a while back they are small. I'm sure that's because of the heat.
Also my have list should include a crossvine. I posted it in the wrong thread :-( It is in a large pot. And I want to keep the pot. So if anyone wants it ask now. I really don't want to lug it out there if no one wants it.
If you don't mind lugging it, I would love to have it Siggy! I waited about an hour before jumping in, hope others don't mind. I have an 80 foot fence that is just waiting for coverage of some kind! I just saw Frostweed's beautiful crossvine, even without blooms, it is lovely.
Edited to say....I will bring a pot, and bag to transfer it.
Greenie67, it was great meeting you today and thanks for bringing your items down for everyone too. I am sure they would have loved to meet you, maybe next time.
Sheila

Sheila, Its yours.
Also should I bring chairs and a table?
Josephine...
Do you have any Blue Flax (linum lewisii), maximilian sunflower (helianthus maximiliani), or Wild Floxglove (Penstemon cobaea) in your wildflower slope or yard?
Thanks Siggy!! I will let Frostweed or Mitch answer the question. I am not exactly sure what we will have, since they weren't going to use the Pavillion this year since it was so far from the parking lot.
Check this one out! I will have so many seeds that I am giving them to everyone who wants some. I have 3 colors (Yellow, Pink, and White) altogether but mostly this white one 8-10 inch blooms It flowers like crazy all Spring and Summer. Very hardy!
(Also have loads of Buddelia White Profussion Seeds.)
