Good Morning. You were up early Twyla and scooterbug!!
It's foggy here and feels like fall, which is always sad but beautiful. It will be a relief to finally get the garden cleaned out. We haven't done that yet. I still have lots of beans to pick and freeze. DH made I don't know how many gallons of sauce. I will invest in a pressure canner - it's about time.
My new kitties seem quite well settled in and happy-still not best friends with the older ones, but no more fighting (YAY!!). Time to start gearing down for winter and start putting plans on paper for the farm.
Mary-Glad you had a good ride and two healthy horses!!
defoecat-I sure hope you're feeling better.
All those loaves of bread look wonderful!!
Ann-I hope you don't get anything from your travels, but I have to say, I ALWAYS did when I flew. The air is just too closed in for too long. Funny about the clothing sizes all being small although it makes sense I guess.
McCool-Very sad about your mother's friend. I hope DH doesn't get too bothered by the number 60. We'd probably be better off to avoid our ages after about 35, I don't know anyone who can believe how old they've gotten!
sarv-Wow you had a busy labor day with barn trim. When we had our first house in NJ we started painting trim on Labor day and it became a tradition for the next 6 Labor Day weekends. It was kind of a neighborhood joke. Course I gave birth to a couple kids in there too, which slowed things down.
Molly -beautiful orchid. Unthinkable for me!
m5-gorgeous picture. I like your fairy sculpture! Your garden still looks so neat - mine are overrun by weeds by now....gotta get out while it's cooler and clean things up again
Okay back to the coffeepot, then off to the feed store and errands, hope all have a lovely day!~~~~~
Just had a call from PatiSchell. She has been in the hospital since Thursday. They had to put in a stent from her kidney to the bladder, bypassing the stone because the kidney was swelling. She will have a CT Scan and then they will laser the kidney stone. She's very doped up, but wants everyone to know she's hanging in there. Oh, and her internet is down. IO1, she said your package came but she hasn't opened it. She said she will thank you directly when she can get back online.
Good morning folks,
As Dorothy said, it's a bit foggy here too. We're not that far apart; so not surprising that we'd get similar conditions. It seems to have lifted a bit in the last hour; Must say it's preferable to more rain.
Glad to here the kitties are settling in, Dorothy. No obvious ailments yet from the travel, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Took Echinacea and vitamin C and hope that having gone business class that I've come in less contact with bad germs. BTW, we were on a Boeing 777(Air Nippon) from Sapporo to Kansai. Very comfortable plane with huge (by airline standards) washrooms. http://www.boeing.com/commercial/777family/background.html
By comparison, Air Canada's 767 that took us across the Pacific was a moth-eaten fleabag as was the Airbus 321 that took us from Vancouver to Ottawa.
Mary - glad your horses were well enough for both to be ridden over the weekend.
Darius - thanks for the update on Pati.
Well, today I have to start being productive. Will head out shortly to Weight Watchers and begin to undo the vacation damage. Then to Optomotrist for an eye exam. My 6 yr old glasses are scratched. It's time I replaced them.

Ann
Well, I'll be switched!! Had a long post all written and it blew off into the cybersphere and now I have to dig through my brain to remember what I was babbling about. Sheesh, I really hate that!!
By the way, thanks for continuing to set up our new day, Elaine, into September. It's not too bad once you get used to it, but some of us had a slow learning curve....like me!
Scooter, no, we are west on National, wish we were east, there's lots more room thataway. Still regret that we built in a subdivision, esp, DH, who would liked to have put up a pole barn for the Mustangs and Rancheros.
Molly, the orchid was beautiful. What a great idea to put that addition on, can you believe where you are now compared to last year?? Some things just work out so well that you wonder how it all fell together. Except you have vivid memories of the paperwork and hard labor!! Jeremy's GF has four kids? Wow! Does he like kids? Most guys would hit the road at full speed. And she brought food! That's a good sign, knowing how much kids eat, (and waste) she was very thoughtful.
Darius, I just bought new jars, and I was disappointed at the box and the shrink wrap too. I've saved all my old ones, even though they are pretty beat up at least they have the dividers and can be closed up. Some of them have to be 40 years old. Or more. Tell Pati we are thinking of her and sending well wishes for a speedy recovery.
Maria, the soda bread is excellent but I had to freeze half, we can only eat so much in a day. My maternal GM used to make Swedish Limpa bread, but I never got her recipe. She always made our favorites when we came to visit, Kropkokkor which is little potato dumplings with a filling of salt pork, onion and allspice, or salt cured cod in a white sauce with boiled potatos. She drank her coffee by cooling it in the saucer, and sipping it through a sugar cube. I would like to make some rye bread but I don't like working with that sticky rye flour.
Bonnie, I hope you are feeling better today. Ten check books!! Yikes, that would have me frazzled for sure. I do most of my banking on line, which my bank provides free. Figure I've saved about $25 on postage since I started using their bill pay function. I don't write many checks anymore since I use the debit card a lot.
Kooger, did you get all of your to-do list done? It rained here all day so I didn't get out at all. Didn't labor either....like so many of you did. We were going to go out to the Olive Garden for dinner but when we got there they said it was a 40 minute wait so we bailed and went to the pie place. DH had a french dip and I had soup and salad and a slice of raspberry pie. Brought the pie home, halved it and heated it up so a scoop of ice cream would melt nicely on it.
Dorothy, the sculpture is actually the top of a fountain. The base was made out of some weird composite and it didn't weather well. Started leaning heavily to one side as it softened, so we just use the top. If we had continued to use it as a fountain it would have rust streaks all over it from our iron laden water. And there's no weeds because that's part of the area we dug up to get rid of the field horsetail, which I am sure is still lurking underneath. The landscape fabric is doing a good job. Glad to hear the kitties are getting along. It just takes time. And unfortunately, sometimes they never adjust. Kittens seem to fit in more easily than adults. And your bread looks picture perfect, Could I have a slice for toast??
DH is home on vacation again, yesterday he repainted the pedal car tractor and it looks pretty spiffy.
~~~ to laurie, twyla, Susan, Somer, lisa, robert, IO1, Mary, and anyone I may have over looked. Sympathy for those who have to go back to work today, I'm making a run for more peaches (after double checking their supply) but don't have any major chores hanging over me. Maybe squeeze in a couple more episodes of the Closer.......and run the Dyson. And I'm copying this in case the post eater consumes it.
Later....
Sheila
What a cute "tractor" LOL
Morning everyone!
Well, my DB left late yesterday afternoon, and I popped in a couple of times to post ... but never made it to coffee. Felt like the DH needed a bit of pampering so had to slap my hand when I walked by the puter. LOL
Will have to do some catching up before I can comment much, but thanks Darius on the update from Pati. I have been worried about *her* not the package. :-) Am so sorry she is having such a rough time.
McCool, I missed sending a Bday greeting to your DH. Sounds like you were having quite a party for him. Will need to go back and read up further as I've missed out on the ending. :-) I did read something about someone being toooo helpful, but like I said ... will read more when I have time.
Defoe, how are you feeling? What about your foot?
Maria, tap tap tap tap tap. I'm anxiously awaiting your doctor's report. :-)
Ann, so glad to see you back home safe and sound.
dmc, I have your thread marked but haven't been able to go over as yet to follow your work. It sure sounds like quite a project.
Okay, to everyone else, I know this is a poor job, but wanted to check in for a min. Hope everyone has a good day in the garden!
~Elaine~
Oh, MY! What a collection. :)
Well, I am up, and having coffee. Didn't awake during the night to the coughing, so maybe I am on the mend.
Darius, sorry to hear about Patti, hope that they can resolve the kidney stone issue soon. If you talk to her again, please send my regards and well wishes for a speedy recovery.
M5, what else does DH collect? Seems like he has the motor bug bad!! That pie place must be very busy. Sounds good too. I have some peaches that are on the brink of going bad, so will make a cobbler today for DH.
dmc, yes there is a definite chill in the air, which signals gardening season is about over. I look forward to it, but dread it too. Don't like cold. Wish I could be somewhere that was about 75 year round.
Sarv, I don't mind painting, but have never tackled a barn. Your energy must kick in with the cooler temps.
Maria, glad that you are feeling better, please come back and tell us what the Dr says today. Hope it is good news, and that you will be well in a jiff.
Well have some errands to run this morning, so better get at it.
Hope you all have a good day.
Sounds like most everybody had a good weekend.
I don't know Patti but wish her a speedy recovery.
All the bread looks delicious. But I will stick with my bread machine. I have made bread by hand and enjoyed doing it. I eat way to much bread when it is homemade.
ViAnn the apples go in the freezer. I am finally done with them. My DB helped me with the last ones and I sent home an apple crisp with him. He only wanted one. I'll give him another later.
Had family over on sunday. It was a good visit. DS Made spaghetti,DM brought broccoli, I made deviled eggs and garlic cheese bread. My DN made chocole cake with peanut butter frosting. Everything turned out so good. It's been a long time since oldest DS and BIL have been here. She said
'the yard looked like a wonderland" My DM said "it looks like everything is dying" I prefer my DS' comment. DM sees everything half empty. My GN chased the frogs. He didn't get wet. Pretty good for an 11 yr old.
M5 what a collection. I wonder if my DM has any pedal cars? She use too. My DB told DH to look up this site."cars in barns" I guess it's pretty sad.
Twyla how are your furbabies doing? How are you feeling?
Maria glad you're feeling better and samson sounds like a doll. Tomatoes look good.
I know I've missed some. But it takes me a long time to put names to people. My DH is very good at it. I'm so jealous of that gift.
To everyone else hi and hope you have a great day. Have to go and get my day started.Other then being on computer.
Yuck, just looked again at the wire fencing my neighbor put across the creek to keep his cattle in. With rain and high waters today, the entire fence across the creek is covered with crap people have thrown in (or near) the creek upstream... plastic bottles, bags and all kinds of trash which no doubt I will have to clean up once the rain stops and the waters recede.
My good news for the morning is that I have located someone who can clean my chimney, put a cap on top, and change the thimble to fit my wood stove. Of course, my stove is still in NC but my friends promise to bring it up soon. That means I need to save up for some firewood!
Sheila i wiah i could remember all you can type my mind is lost in cyber space i do believe. He has a nice safe collection there to do nothing dangerous.Paul Newman raced and Did not far from here on a, not known track.. think closest town its the gosh name just left me think its Hallet.. hallett race track... its sure busy now 100's rv's there when have every week end.
Ann the bread was such wonderful loafs. and i would be afraid to get on a bag moth eaten flea bag..plane think what called it . . i was on a plane 24 yrs ago small braniff ? to go get my grandson in texas.. couple days old..not ever since.
Kittys fine sleeping now up till 4 watching them hearing cry now then wanted to get all over.. she lays at my feet and sleeps..they are few ft. away.
Everyone have agreat day...~~~~~ Twyla
Afternoon everyone. Back from coffee and a stop at two greenhouses - both looking very bare. I did manage to get three cartons of fertilizer and a pulmonaria all marked down to $2. I stopped there because I had a gift card to use up, but wouldn't you know, I switched purses and it was at home.....
After leaving there I dropped off a friend and continued home, only to be rear ended by two teenagers smoking like chimneys. I got out of the car and went back to the teens car and she was sobbing and apologizing (always a good sign) I didnt see any damage to my car and told her 'sh** happens -don't worry about it* and I drove off. LOL to myself - I bet she thought I was crazy!! I won't even tell DH it happened- he freaks out if someone touches the car! School started today and the kids were let out at 11:30-first day jitters!!
Maria - I always feel better when it is time to go to the doc- must be a mind thing.. I'm sitting here with an ice pack on my itchies again. Just when I think I am better- they come back with a vengence. I need to remember to pack a pack when I go out....actually need to get a couple more of the bendable ones- mine sprung a leak and all that gooey stuff is leaking out.
~~ to everyone- I'm hungry- so gotta get some lunch..
Hope Patti is feeling better- that stone must be a mega one! Darius -yuck- on the junk on the fence.. We need to clean our chimney too - didn't do it last year and I worried about it all winter. We burn a lot of wood and I know it is gunked up. DH doesn't like to get on the roof anymore - last time DS did it for us. We have the big wire brush etc. But since we have little wood supply, I don't think we'll be burning much. We used to get a huge semi load dropped off - 20 cord- but that was in the younger years!!
M5- your DH has a problem.....get him help LOL He does need a barn..
hmmm - this is crazy. I had typed way more than was posted above and it didn't show up - wonder where it went???
Dunno... DG has been strange all day for me... mostly extremely slow.
Back from a trip to town. DH ran out of milk, and it is an absolute must for him. Went to the library for DM, as she reads everyday. Have done nothing at all productive, and may not. Seems I am getting used to this idleness, and loving it. Just wish I could feel better NOW!!
Gonna make DH a peach cobbler as I have peaches that are drawing gnats, not going bad, but the gnats are driving me nuts.
Well off to do more nothing. BBL
Hi folks,
Back home and wasting time. Forgot that I wouldn't be able to see well enough to go out and do errands after visiting the optometrist. Good news is that my prescription hasn't changed. Still expect new glasses to cost about $800. Might look into laser surgery to at least equalize the eyes and reduce the cost of fancy glasses.
Sheila - that is quite a collection your DH has. My DH has his hobby cars, but isn't into the models. Speaking of hobby cars, he had major work done on the Porsche while we were away and we'll have to go fetch it tonight or tomorrow. It's out in the country at an establishment run by a Porsche club friend from way back. After he retired from government, he went into fixing Porsches - especially old ones like ours (1965) full-time.
Maria - great looking tomatoes. Hope your Dr appointment goes well.
ves522 - what do you use the frozen apples for?
Darius - sorry about the junk by your creek. but good news about the chimney.
Came home and heard a horror story about musical instruments on airplanes. Air Canada destroyed a sister viola to mine - made earlier by the same maker. I know both the viola (originally made for a good friend of mine) and the kid who presently owns it.
http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/news/story.html?id=2b8d8168-3abe-4d7f-b076-875c835a032e
Sarv - glad you weren't hurt at all when rear-ended. Watch for signs of whip lash over the next couple days. But if there was no damage to the car, then you're probably OK. Maybe the kids learned a valuable lesson. Sorry to hear the itchies are still bothering you.
Hi to everyone else.
BBL
Ann
let's try that link again - it didn't work right.
Ann
checking in before I go on a peach hunt. I got rear ended a couple years ago, just a bump really. Then the woman got out of the car, a very old car, and I just dropped my jaw. She was driving with a cast on her right leg from knee to foot, and one on her right arm!! And she was in tears....! My car had no damage that I could see, and we hardly felt the bump. I thought that she had more than enough on her plate, so I told her to forget it, no problem, just go home and don't drive until you get the cast off. Wondered if she was trying to use her left foot for acceleration and braking.........
sheila
Weird! That link worked perfectly when I previewed it. Maybe DG can only handle a certain number of characters in URLs. To get to the page, just type an "e" at the end of the URL in the address bar and it should take you to the correct page. At least it did for me.
Ann
Ann, adding the "e" worked. How sad for that young man.
ViAnn I'll probably make some apple butter for Mil and FIL. Then apple crisp to take to family.
M5~In reference to your comment on my smelling like a burrito……Maybe that is why I get so much attention when I return home in the evening. It’s not me it’s my new “scent.” Love Spell from Victoria Secret doesn’t work but the El Caporal seems to be a hottie. Hmmmmm I’ll have to ask the other ladies about that one Main thing he likes is that I get my dinner to go. Last night I talked to the owner, the evening went great. Although I’m the Hostess he wants the servers to know and be able to do their jobs. They have gotten use to having someone help them out but they receive the tips. Like last night when the owner’s son (who is a wonderful young man) was bussing for them, none of them tipped him out???? I do hate the “it’s not my job” or “it’s not in my job description” attitude, especially when you work for a wonderful establishment.
The Fairy Statue is so cute.
Darius~ The water spill cracked me up as it reminded me of a few times waking up next to the toddler snuggled up, either the diaper had leaked (back when we used the cloth) or just had an accident. Are you sure it was the water? I know I dreamed about having to “go” and woke up just in time:)
How about my youngest just popping in on his lunch break saying “I was so ticked this morning my iron didn’t work”….Yes! I love that my boys got the ironing concept. They are very particular about their clothes. Sis is too but ironing is less important to her and my nieces could care less. When DN lived with us a few years back she would bring out her work pants and say Aunt Karen do you think these are OK to wear? They would definitely need ironed and she knew I would do it because I knew she would wear them that way. She is 26 now, going to college to be a teacher and actually does do some ironing. She called to say she bought an iron….made me proud.
I still say Airborne before and after a flight or whenever you are going to be with a large group in an enclosed area. My bout with the flu in OR snuck up on me and then I was so sick I didn’t even think of AB and DML had it right there! Echinacea and vitamin C are great too. I use to go up to Costco in Abbotsford to get it as we couldn’t get here.
All the bread looks and sounds yummy! I do love bread! I wish I had the knack for making it. Never mind, I don't. I could just eat, eat, eat bread. My favorite was my grandmother's homemade potato bread toasted on the wood cook stove! I can make it and it does turn out OK but it takes too much time. I did make some zucchini bread on Monday in the little individual bundt pans. I add ½ cup oatmeal and delete a little flour….works well. My DN uses bananas and zucchini. I used cocoa in a batch the other day that turned out great. It did need the chocolate chips.
DH helped me do up the rest of our pears yesterday then continued when I left for work. They look wonderful.
What kind of businesses do you all have?
Mary~ What kind of riding do you do? I’m not a horse person mind you…..Do you ride in competitions? My DML was riding in a poker run when she fell from her horse and broke both her wrists in June. Poor thing, to be so active then to be totally dependent on someone else from the beginning of June till the end of July, it stunk. Then still not being able to do any of the canning from her gorgeous garden, she was quite depressed. Things are going better now. I hope those fires stay away from your area. The smoke must be awfull. My DN lives in Hilo, HI. The vog from the volcano gets so bad sometimes you have to stay inside. They have terrible issues with asthma over there. Sad.....it's so beautiful but so dangerous.
Defoe~ Do you put meat in your sauce? Or just can it without? I’m sure I asked this before…sorry. I’m going to do sauce this fall only I’m not doing it from scratch per say. I will buy the #10 cans of tomato sauce then add my own seasonings. I think I will do it without meat. That can be added later as DA doesn’t eat red meat. My guys get a little grumpy if they don’t get “the beef” with their sauce. I have to add mushrooms later, DH does HATE mushrooms.
Maria~Nice tomatoes…my one little plant has quite a few that are almost ready. I’m doing as Linda has done with her tomatoes and putting my little pear tomatoes in the freezer. I’ll use them in soup. I never have but I’m sure they will be fine.
Sheila~Cute tractor! Great paint job! Wow! What a collection of Pedal cars! I’ve never seen a pedal car collection. How fun!
We had a Youth group from church paint a barn for a service project once. We rented a hydraulic lift. The story of the barn is a sad one. The owners son was playing around with some friends as a 5th grader and hung himself. The barn sat untouched for about 10 years. A family from our church lives right down the road and decided it needed a new look for the parents. It turned out wonderful and the family was very thankful.
Sarv~Ann is right, you can feel the effects of a rear end job a day or two later. And yes, let’s hope they will pay better attention and realize not everyone would be as “crazy” as you:)
I rear ended someone once when our youngest was a baby. That was back before airbags (or at least the cars we owned didn’t have them) I looked over at him in his car seat and looked up too late! She had hit her brakes for something and I was too close. That was 20 years ago and I haven’t forgotten the feeling. It drives my family nuts because I freak when they get too close. Like you said sh** happens….I tell them that all the time.
I’m sure you all heard about the death of Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter. He was one of my youngest son’s favorite people. DS imitates him exactly and even did a short skit about him in a HS talent show. I was just looking at that tape on Monday thinking we needed to watch it again. So sad and sorry for his dear little family.
Have a great day everyone......I'm a bit slow at this typing thing and have typed a book already:0) I need to get some things done outside, inside and go get some more of the El Caporal fragrance. Thanks for all your recipes, pictures and great stories. Get well! K~
Okay, back for a quick check in. Have done the laundry, have a roast with carrots and potatoes in for supper, unloaded the dishwasher, cleaned the bathrooms and played on the puter a bit. :-) Sounds like enough for one day. LOL
ves, apple butter or a crisp sounds wonderful to me. I could especially take a piece of crisp to go with a cup of coffee about now.
Well, we're getting some much needed rain today ... just a good steady sprinkle, nothing hard. :-) I think everything is smilin outside.
Darius, did you ever hear anything from your helper? How did the grape juice turn out? Did you do anything with it yet?
Maria, are you back yet?
Well, since I can't do anything but ask questions ... I'll BBL when there's answers! LOL
~E~
IO1, haven't picked any grapes yet. Waiting for the fermenting food grade buckets my sis ordered to arrive. Hopefully this week before the grapes rot on the vines. I'd love to have a steam juicer... maybe next year. I'm sure I will have several bushels which will need to be closely inspected and all the stems removed. Worse than shelling peas or snapping beans!
somermoone, the wet spot was up by my shoulder/chest so unless my anatomy has changed, it WAS water, LOL.
Everyone has been busy and I've just been lazy. Sat watching the creek rise and fall but I need to fetch a jacket. Hasn't warmed up past 65º today. I DID make a pan of roasted tomatoes so I'll have some fresh sauce available when my brother arrives which could be as early as tomorrow evening. However, Tropical Storm Florence is on the horizon and aiming at his neck of the woods so far.
M5, that really is QUITE a collection. Worth some bucks if he croaks. Doubt you could get them away from him otherwise.
BBL
Yeah, great collection.......for a while he had them scattered around the house, three in the living room, one in the entry, two in the dinette until I put my foot down. Bad enough dusting furniture, will NOT dust pedal cars. So he built the rack in the garage.
Got peaches but they are mighty green. Took the last ones three days, these won't be ripe til Friday or Saturday.
I don't think either of my DDs own an iron. I don't mind ironing, put the board in front of the tv, and get a stool to sit on. Have a new Rowenta that steams like Vesuvius!!
BBL
Sheila
Darius, the longer those grapes stay on the vine, the more likely you get the sweet wine that your sister (and me) prefer. You'll have to wait til next season for the dryer/early grapes wine.
I've been reading as I go but hadn't taken the time to write in here. I had some boxes I had to get shipped out and then postage came so I had some more boxes to pack.
The job didn't start today because the "new boss" never called to tell me where to go. I finally left a message yesterday morning to ask him what's up. Well we finally connected again and I'll go meet him for the job tomorrow morning.
Yes Jeremy seems to enjoy his girlfriends kids. He still young enough (in his mind) that he connects with them. They range from 8 to 14, the youngest girls being twins, then a boy and the oldest girl a teen. Too early to be rushing into anything serious, but they seem to be enjoying one another and they are good to each other.
Wow, it's 91 and almost 5, that's HOT!.
Jeremy is working on getting the freebie riding mower working. I stopped to get a gas line and some clamps so he went to get some gas and then he'll piddle around with it til dark. I have been "mowing" the tall grass in the dogs yard with the weed wacker. Since the "lawn" isn't filled in and lush, I can spot wack and get by with that.
Molly
:^)))
Pooh... Because of the rain, the chimney man won't come until tomorrow for an estimate. (I don't blame him.)
Molly, the grapes on the not-so-sunny sides of the barn and tool shed are slower to ripen so I may get lucky and have some of both. The refractometer, which tells sweetness or ripeness, won't be here for a few days.
Good luck with the grapes Darius. The local winery that I get to help out at is close to this years crush. Maybe in a couple weeks. Cabernet is first. Willis Hall is the name of the winery. John is a retired Boeing Engineer. The place is set up in a big tall garage behind his house. Several of his offerings have earned gold medals. Just look at the possibilities ahead of you. Bread and wine, delicate jellies and cakes. What more could a person want.
Gads, so much to catch up on. Don't think I'll make it. Glad to see you safely home Ann, and Sarv unscathed from the car accident, and Molly's new job, and Elaine's pot roast, Karen's Eau de Burrito, Ves' apple crisp, Defo's peach cobbler, Meezer's cool car toys and kroppkakor (yum yum), and all else I missed . Fingers rested and eager to grab a hammer again. One piece of the fence is shingled, maybe do one more, just for giggles.
Hi everyone. It's about 90 here, dry and sunny, great for drying laundry, and I just remembered it is still in the washer but on days like this it only takes about an hour to dry. There is still time.
Fritz has been sprung from "jail" and is happy to be home. My neighbor just came over to see if I could help him move cows in the morning, and Fritz barked and carried on for about 20 minutes while we talked outside. Neighbor had 2 dogs with him and Fritz knew they were out there. He's a little nut case which is why I couldn't take him with me to the ride. Hubby was gone this weekend, fishing in Alaska with our sons, so I had to board the dog or he would have gotten into trouble and yapped driving everyone nuts. There are a lot of people who bring their dogs and Fritz has no brains. The dogs are supposed to be on a leash at all times but the leashes must be invisible.
I see that the discount store has snapdragons and panseys for 88 cents each in 4 inch pots. Tempting, but no, they just stayed there for now. I can get some in the spring for about the same price when I am more anxious to be out there digging in the dirt and trying to plant something in half frozen ground.
Somermoone, I compete in endurance rides. Most people understand the concept of a marathon, only we do our miles on horseback over logging roads and cow trails. I have traveled up to your part of the world and competed in some in the mountains near SedroWoolley, but haven't been up there for about 4 years or more. I really prefer being out in open country, I feel quite closed in when in the woods like you have up there. This past weekend I was in Idaho mountains with much less underbrush than your forests have.
I got some updates on fire locations. One is just about 40 miles east of us but there are some 9000+ ft mountains between so it will go north or south. A neighbor of mine said there are 3 or 4 fires that will probably join up to be one big one, and they have lost some fire trucks on it already, hopefully not lost any people but those things do happen. If it gets into designated wilderness they will just have to let it burn, no roads and everything has to be left natural. Her husband works for the US Forest Service, he isn't physically able to fight fires anymore, but drives a supply truck, so he knows where all the fires are and gives her updates. He just comes home long enough to sleep and then goes out again. In the winter he gets laid off so the overtime comes in real handy to help make ends meet.
M5, that is quite the collection your hubby has. No wonder you don't want them in the house where you have to dust them. I'm not into dusting. You could write your name on my furniture but please don't write the date. Some of my dust is old enough for Social Security.
When I was in town today I saw my sister, she was in the farm store getting salt for their cattle and doing other shopping. She has to come back tomorrow and might come out to pick beans. I might be gone moving cows but she knows where the garden is.
I think our hummingbirds might have left over the weekend. There is still some juice in the feeders but I haven't seen any activity yesterday or today. Do any of you who live in the north still have them?
Got to get the laundry hung up and move the sprinklers again. ~~~ to all of you that I missed, I know, it was most of you.
I took all the tomatoes I picked this morning to my daughter prepared them for roasting, now it is up to her to finish them, she tought this was goin to be fun for her and DH never have done this before, I even brought the food mill for them to use, now I am wondering how they are making out with the sauce, lol
Glad yiou liked the soda bread Sheila. I know it makes quite a bit, I usually cut it in three parta for my girls and one for me.When my dh was well he could eat the whole thing, lol
The bread you made Ann, looks absolutely perfect, bought some rye flour today, think I will make some limpa bread, have not made it in quite a while Either way Ann, could not get that at all!
Hi Bonny, Karen, and everyone I am ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~to
Evening eveyone! Just sitting here mellowing out...dinner with folks was delish= as usual. I hope when I am 82, I can still cook like my mom...She even left the leftovers here to DH to take to work tomorrow..
We had a nice rain for about an hour- steady, but not a gully washer. Plants will be smiling tomorrow morning! I need to get the one plant I ought in the ground tomorrow.
Maria- glad to hear that you are feeling better. Love those chickens you buy- in fact, maybe I'll get one for dinner tomorrow...I'm into easy!! LOL
Mary, I thought my hummers were gone, but they buzzed my head the other day. I expect them to take off any day now. sorry to see them leave.. Glad to hear that Fritz is on parole! Don't you wonder what they are thinking when you kennel them?
Just called my DGS - he's in 4th grade this year and he told me they all get palm pilots.. Can you imagine...what in the world do 9 yr oldsneed with those.... Some times I shake my head about education...
Bal- good looking fence (is it really a fence tho?) Looks like a roof panel to me!
Well, DH is snoring and I am about ready to get my jammies on. I'ts only around 8pm, but I am whipped tonight...
Hi y'all
Have had a terrible time with DG today, so won't try to post a lot right now. Just wanted to ~ at Maria and say how glad I am that you got a good report from the doc today.
Sheila, thanks so much for that wonderful singing card. :-) How perfect! LOL
We're still getting showers which is just fine with me.
Okay am ~~~ to everyone else. Don't want this to go poof so I'll post.
~E~
Hi all,
I also had a hard time getting on here tonight. Consequently, I'm planning to post tomorrow's link really early so I don't have to worry about not being able to get on site again later. By the way, I received a D-mail from ViolaAnn this morning. She offered to take the latter half of this month so that we will each have taken the posting duty for a whole month. She will take over as of the 18th of September. Who's going to take October? It's really not hard, you know!
sarv, I'm very glad to hear that you weren't injured in that "fender-bender"! I hope that hidden damage doesn't surface in either you or your car. We were hit head-on a few years back while stopped for a light. The guy pushed us right into the car behind us and both ends of the car were damaged, but some of it didn't show up until quite a bit later.
darius, good luck with your wine-making! Have you ever done it before? I've never tried, but have had some pretty good home-made wine over the years. Some friends used to make rice wine too. Glad you found someone to help with the chimney and woodstove. Did you ever find out what happened with Brent?
Dmcd, kittens have settled in ----- what a relief! I think that in our case, it's probably a good thing that there's usually a period of kitty warfare (or at least, noise-making) whenever a new one is introduced. If it weren't for that, we'd probably be over-run by now. Oh yeah, anyone looking for an adult cat or kittens? My animal control officer friend called to let me know that they now have two mama cats and several kittens in dire need of homes. We really can't handle any more vet bills at the moment.
Maria, hurrah on the good report from the doc! Just don't go getting too cocky now and overdoing. I've been picking quite a few Roma tomatoes too --- don't even want to think about how many have landed in the garbage because I just don't have time to deal with them. My bell peppers are the only veggies that have really done well this year and I think that that's because they were planted in the new raised bed. What's your verdict on the Earthboxes, by the way?
ves, all the apple products sound delicious. Bet you're glad to see the end of all the work on them though.
Twyla, how are you doing? Has it gotten any cooler there of late?
Hi Mary, I certainly hope that all those fires stay far away from you, but I'd think that even the smoke could be quite a problem. How do the horses react to it? I would think that it would make them awfully nervous ---- or are they acclimated to it? Glad that Fritz is out of "jail", but can see how taking him along would have been a massive pain for all concerned.
Bonnie, glad to hear that you weren't up half the night again with the cough. Sounds like progress and I hope it continues apace. How's your DH's back doing?
Robert, wish I could wield a hammer with results even an eighth as good as what you routinely produce.
Sheila, so your DH is "driven" is he? Mine is a plastic model junkie, but I really can't say too much since I own the hobby shop that a good number of those kits came from. I did have quite a lot to say when the cartons of half-done kits expanded from two cellars, the attic, and the front room into our bedroom, though! He's started to sell off some of his least favorites through E-bay, so we're getting a little more breathing space (not to mention a few dollars that are sorely needed at the moment).
Speaking of DH, he's lurking, waiting to check his e-mail, so I'd best say goodnight and post tomorrow's link. ~~~~~~~~~~~ to all I hadn't had a chance to address yet.
Here's the link. See you over there. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/648050/
