Al, they showed up later than usual here, too.
Maybe we need a little love potion.

Anita, Did they stay after you released them? I"ve always wondered about that.
Dave

I think alot of them did as I found them throughout the season. I am sure many left though. I would definitely order them again. I ordered them in 3 shipments. I am pretty sure it was the ladybugs that helped perk up my hanging tomato plants by eating the aphids on them.

Not your usual city bird I saw today in town.

Al, I saw a Heron by the small river near home a few years ago. That was a surprise with all the industry and housing around. Cool.
Has anyone noticed how blue the sky is this time of year? Lovely.
Andy P

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Andy - I see them in the river quite often, this one flew up 20' from me and landed.
I used to see a Black Crowned Night Heron in an industrial area with a river(polluted) going through it, but then they filled in the section of river he perched at.

Aha, that's the guy that ate Dave's fish

Hi, All. I've been spending too much time in the blogging world. There is a lot of junk out there. I occasionally find a gem, though.
Here is one that grows almost every day. A few poems and lots of super images that are sure to make you smile. http://tickle-me-with-a-butterfly.blogspot.com/ She has another that is posted in her links section in pink 'Angel Feathers tickle me'.
I also found one for really good recipes, if anyone wants the link for that one, let me know. yummy
I've neglected DG this week, this is the only thread I've posted in. (hanging head in shame)
Nancy, have you upgraded to Beta, yet?
It appears that Blogging is the hottest thing out there. According to one blog search engine there are 1,200,000 blog posts and 75,000 new blogs created every day. I had no idea how big this is.

Has anyone had a frost yet? It's about time to bring in those house plants.
Andy P

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Andy ~ Frost? Most definately! It was 27 degree's here this morning.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

No frost yet, but there's a threat tonight. I've got a brugmansia (still tiny little thing) outside that I need to repot into something smaller today. then I can bring it in. and I'm closing my pool today. I'm officially bummed. so I ordered a few houseplants to cheer myself up (I'm so spoiled).

Andy, just so long as you don't forget us altogether.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I just finished bringing in my orchids. One has revived itself over the summer so it won't have to visit the compost heap! I had fretted over them being out since the last time I did, hitchhikers came back in with them. This year I hopefully have resolved that by hosing them down real good and then spraying with melathion. It is very upsetting to have a beautiful flower spike start to grow only to have some critter that has hidden somewhere in the soil come out at night a feast on it!!!! Another plant has a flower spike on it and I am very excited as this particular one has not budded in two years!! I was on the verge of composting it and thought I would just put it outside as a last resort. I guess bringingit out has paid off! They are all under lights in my basement. I'm hoping that with some TLC I'll be able to get them to bud and put them out in the living areas of home to be enjoyed! I had nursed phaelanopsis and it is currently in the living room in bloom! I have been doing the same with African Violets. I have them under lights where I propagate them from leaves. Once they start budding, I put them out to be enjoyed. I also enjoy sharing them. Gram, I haven't forgotten, when they mature a bit, I'll send a few out to you!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Anita, I never take my orchids outside because I worry about what will come back in with them. and it's so much easier to control the environment inside.

the 2 AV's I have are finally doing much better. one is a purple with a ruffled edge, the other a very double pink. i'm going to try starting some new plants. if I'm successful, and you'd like either or both, they're yours. I'm looking forward to having some of yours.

Thanks Gram, let me know how they are doing. I actually have quite a collection of violets and at the moment there is no room at the in. Good luck!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Sunrise is such a peaceful, beautiful time of the day. I welcomed the sun this morning along with the birds, it was a lovely shade of pink.

pixie, that is absolutely lovely. I guess that's one plus to having the sun come up a little later. you've been quite the artiste photographique lately. really, really, nice.

Andy, quess what, berries on my holly. not a ton, but at least enough that I noticed them. I'm thinking blueberries, too. even if it's just for the birds.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Gram, but I really should show you what the poor flowers looked like w/a good heaping of dew left on them.

I like how they glisten on this dark one.

pix, you're right, the dark one looks extra velvet'y. I'm planting some dianthus. one is 'Rachel' (same as my DGD).

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Nice pics everyone, good to see some here again.
Pixie, was that the frosty morning dew?
Gram, that's about what my Holly looks like, too. Only a few berries but it's a start.
I've taken a grand total of 3 pics all week. I haven't even down loaded them yet, although one is very interesting.
When I get involved in a new venture I can't stop myself. Right now my head is spinning. Things will settle back to normal in a few days.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Andy, you sound like me. {just a tad obsessive, but in a good way?} I'm like that when I start anything new.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Hey Andy, I meant to ask you about beta. I visit your blog everyday and saw you have upgraded, but I don't know why?

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Hey Andy, Do you think Pixie picked up your squirt bottle trick?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Andy,
Yes, That is the frosty morning dew on those flowers, and No Dave...no squirt bottle was used. We really had that much frost yesterday morning and about the same this morning.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Nancy, I upgraded to Beta because I could, lol.
There are more options to customize the page and it's easier to add links etc.
I also found tons of info on the 'help' forums that kept me busy late into the night. Mostly about increasing traffic.
I find it very interesting. I was a main frame computer operator in the '70s and '80s, things have changed completely but the logic is still there.
I'm also looking for another career field as I get older and painting gets too physically demanding. Try painting 12 foot ceilings all day when you're nearing retirement age.
I go through these 'test' periods now and then to see if a new path suits me. I'll never be a "whiz kid" at this but ....

This is what the frost did to my morning glories....

And on my yellow mum I found this guy trying to blend but he was moving, so I noticed him right away!

Got you another seed guessing game for this very common plant - I had never seen the heads ripen though fully.

Milkweed?

I'll give everyone a chance to guess Pixie and then let you know.

Here's some nice fall color.

trying to think what has a pod like that. can't be daylily or pixie would have said it. hosta?

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

Al, My guess is Iris.

I don't take pics of the mantis any more unless there is something different going on. Yesterday I noticed a bee harassing one that was eating another bee. Why would it do that?
This is the one shot I was able to get after running back in to get the camera. One shot on AUTO caught the bee in flight. Lucky me, lol.

Andy, what a fantastic shot! I feel sorry for the bees.

I don't know about switching to beta. I'm not convinced it will do anything for me. But maybe I'll investigate someday when I have a day off. Thanks for the info.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

wow great shot Andy.

Al - I would say it is either a lily or an iris.

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

here's the rest of the plant.

It's an Iris...Anita wins!

Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

it's an evergreen though

Gram have you heard of Der Rosenmeister in Ithaca? I just read on Horticultire Magazine about the best well kept secret of the northeast? It says they have hardy roses for zone 4 and 5... I am wondering if it will be worth a trip next year in May...
