nap - I agree - let's just call winter off this year.

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

Alright, Yank. Winter is now officially called off. Period. Exclamation point!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks, guys. that's a relief. I can certainly do without it. ;0)

I've been camping in the Adirondacks the middle of September. It's always COLD. Beautiful, but COLD. too old for that stuff now.

I should take a pic of my holly, Andy. I have a male & 2 females. a total of 1 berry...count 'em...1. a couple of years ago there were a lot. should look it up and see what i'm doing wrong. must be something they are missing that they need. My service fertilizes them, but i think they use Miracid. maybe they need something longer acting.

Jenny, thanks again for the b'fly advice. I have some swamp milkweed seeds from another DG'er. thought I'd try fall planting some.

Actually, since I've discovered Wintersowing, I'm not so down about winter anymore. As long as I don't have to drive in the snow, that is.

I find it has been very cool here this last week - I haven't been outside at all enjoying anything.....I think our season it almost at its end...well it is for me anyhow. I haven't been doing too much in the gardens lately.

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

This cool weather has me thinking of clean up... http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/650197/

Gram, I never fertilize my Holly. It's on it's own.
It will need a little pruning in Spring to give it shape. It was a volunteer growing along a friends foundation. I had it in a pot for years before I found a spot for it. A Birch tree died along the property line, bang it had a spot.

My heat came on this morning, the thermostat was set at 58. Brrrrr.

DH mentioned turning on the heat this morning, but I refused...NOT IN SEPTEMBER! it's still summer, for pete's sake. it's just wrong. I'm holding out for indian summer and I refuse to recognize this cold weather. probably all I have to do is close my pool. that should do it :0)

Rochester, NY

Good news! Warm sunny weather predicted for this weekend--at least around here. The cool weather has allowed me to do some of the heavier garden work (like adding a rock path), but I really need to stain and seal some of our fence before winter. Maybe this weekend ...

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

Here too...back to the 70's-80's. I don't complain with cool nights though...great sleeping!!

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I am now a Moderator on the Photo Barn forum of a very small, sort of quiet gardening site, http://www.gardencountry.com/ . Maybe some of you can join in and liven things up. LOL

I had a pleasant surprise yesterday. There is an older couple that I occasionally see while walking Sarah. I mentioned that I have lots of cantaloupe and to stop by on their daily walk if they would like one or two. They did yesterday afternoon. They are not gardeners but were fascinated with the Praying Mantis. They make such a lovely pair.
While I was trying to find the Mantis that sits on the Sedum, I saw this 'new' bug. I ran for the camera after they left to get this pic.

Love that Sedum close up - now I have to go and see if mine looks that way up close and personal. What's the bug? I saw a big bee yesterday that had similiar coloring - he would pause in the air, hover, and buzz. No idea what it was.....but it gave me goosebumps.

Wellington, OH

Hummmm - I had never noticed all those little individual flowers before and I've had these plants for years. Makes me wonder what else I've been missing. Nah, I can't start that.

Brockton, MA(Zone 6a)

I'm seeing lots of new details now that I take macro shots. It's like a whole new world.
The bug is a Locust Borer. Magpy identified it for me.

Hello, folks!
I didn't muse yesterday, I went for it. Since the beginning of Sept. my hair has been shedding worse than the dog's from chemo and I got fed up with the length the process was taking and got my self a set of small clippers and I did the deed. I feel so much better. Call me vain, but I hate myself in bad hair! So here's a picture of the new non-do. Advertising space is available!

I like your attitude, Martha.
My sister recently passed the 5 year mark after her diagnosis and treatment.
Hang in there.

Good for you, Martha. I haven't seen a picture of you with your hair, but this new do sure makes your eyes look pretty. My sister lost her hair to chemo also, but it grew back real fast. She liked it so much better short that she kept it that way.

Martha,
You may have lost your hair but not your sense of humor!! Besides not everyone can pull off bald, but you wear it well!!! Good luck and keep up the positive attitude.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Go Martha!

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks folks! I am not worried about it being gone. I always wear short hair anyhow. It was just making such a mess! so, take it away! Now for some new hats and some new earrings!
Martha

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I think the last picture I saw of you, you had on gold lame' and a tiarra!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

Definitely shows off the earrings! you should get LOTS of new ones. attitude is half the battle and you've got that half won already.

hair is a pain anyway. I've always thought it would be neat to have fur like a short-haired cat. they have some neat patterns, doesn't get any longer, just a quick grooming and you're good for the whole day ;0)

Oviedo, FL(Zone 9b)

hmmm, dave, the tiara...yes! I remember where I packed it away. May be time to get it back out so that my look will really rule!
Martha

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

and...getting ready in the morning is much quicker when you don't have to fuss with hair! You go girl!!!

Fairfield County, CT(Zone 6b)

I had a friend who lost her hair to chemo and when it grew back it was thick and gorgeous! She got back the longest eyelashes as well. Have you thought of temporary tatoos for "party dos"?

Long Island, NY(Zone 6b)

I knew someone who had lost her hair too. Since she had always wanted curly hair, she purchased a wig that had it. What a surprise, when it started growing back, it grew in curly!!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I noticed that most of my flower beds are looking rather shabby, as they tend to at this time of the year. But in contrast, the field was alive with color! Lot's of moths and butterflies, and bee's getting that last bit of nectar before frost shuts the snack stand down. Didn't capture any of the insects as they had an erratic, urgentness to their flight but I did get some of the color.

Forgot I saw some strange animal behavior again today. One squirrel was carring another, and it actually carried it up a tree - with some breaks. The last time I saw that I chased after them and the one squirell dropped the other and they both ran away, so it wasn't injured or anything. Has anyone seen this?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Must be their aniversary. *he he he*
or wedding night and you ruined the mood for the one that dropped his bride.

Pixie, I haven't been able to post a pic since Saturday. My gardens are looking tired, too.
Al that's weird. I know squirrels play a lot, but that's odd.
Is it good or bad luck to have a rabbit run across the road in front of you? Lots of rabbits around this year. Not right around home, a block or two away. Sure gets Sarah going, lol.

There is more than one way to skin a cat or in this case a Praying Mantis. lol
I found this Sunday morning stuck in the Marigolds.
They molt 6 or 7 times.

We saw all the little irish step dancers last year at a celtic festival. And not all of them came naturally equipped with lovely red irish curly hair to dance in. Some of them brought theirs in a box! I told my husband I want some "Celtic Hair" and maybe I can get a job with Riverdance!
Martha

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

martha, maybe you can get 7 different wigs and have one for every day of the week, like those panties for little girls that are labelled, Sunday, Monday....

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Andy, You found an anorexic mantis!

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I never see anything cool like that in my garden :0( I thought maybe I wasn't being observant enough, but been spending more time outside with the camera and never see anything interesting. Lots of bees & wasps, which is good, and the spiders seem to be taking over the world. guess that's good, too, whether I like them or not. I see butterflies and dragonflies, but they always seem to be 'just passing by', even though I plant all the stuff they like. next year I'm putting in some butterfly host plants.

Maybe it's because the gardens are so new. it probably takes time to populate them with different kinds of 'bugs', good and bad. the japanese beetles didn't have any problem finding me.

musing about bugs...who'da thunk it?

gram ~a girl~

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Japanese beetles found me too and they are not leaving! They ate every rose bud that popped up.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

pictures posting this morning?? Let's see...

Guess not!
