wind damaged red twig dogwood

Crozet, VA

The winds from Ernesto on Friday night left one of my red twig dogwood tree branchless. I am hoping that not all is lost. Is there a way to use the branches to grow a new tree? Right now I have them in a vase of water and have added a plant nutrient to water.

Has anyone ever successfully saved a broken branch? Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

How big are the branches around? I'm thinking if you have them in a vase they can't be that big. If they arent then you best bet is to dip them in some rooting hormone and plant them in pots, or stick them in a bubbler and wait for roots. In case you are unfamiliar with bubblers, it's a terrific way of rooting things .. just get a trashcan, cheap aquarium pump some tubing and an airstone. Fill the trashcan with water and stick the tubing with the airstone attached and the other end to the aquarium air pump and stick your cuttings in it. It keeps the water very oxygenated and keeps it from going stagnant. In my experience, greenwood works best in a bubbler but brown wood does ok too. Seems to make roots appear faster.

Thank you so much Xeram. I read a few months back about the success that another gardener was having with the bubbles. I might have to buy supplies while I am out this week and set it up. Wish me luck.
