Coffee's on! Anyone have anything exciting planned for today? Wednesday tends to be a slow day for me at the store, but there's always plenty that needs doing.
Here's the link to yesterday's thread, in case anyone wants to check on it. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/645061/
Coffee and .... for Wednesday, August 30th
Hi all,
Havent got time to post much. It is almost 1 pm on Wednesday here and the wholoe conference is about to board a bus for a sightseeing tour this afternoon.
Will have to take time later to really read the posts.
Ann
Hello all.
I'm up with a cuppa. Took hubby to work so that I can get final things for school today and tomorrow for the kids. I'm not excited no.lol
My day is going to be spent outdoors most of the time. I've some weeding that took over during all our rain and some deadheading to get done. I've still got a burning bush to plant. But haven't decided the perfect spot for it yet. Mow the lawn again. and run son to open house. Just daily tasks that are forever.
Least I got the inside of the house prety much done before DGB got here and showed Nana she learned to crawl.
My favorite time of the day this time of year. Must go wakey wakey the DS & DD to get them used to getting up. Evil mom I know but thats the breaks, they've drove me nuts all summer .
BBL Cherie
Still not light yet ....but the horizon is rosy. Gonna go out and play again, and I'm having lunch with DD and DIL at the pie place. Then I have to do some serious cleaning, my spare bath needs it since I make DH clean it. I never use it, just him and his DB or buddy, and he doesn't do everything like I do.
And I only use the good shower mat, lid cover, etc when we have company for reasons known to all women.
Have to go jump in the shower and get moving. Maria, take it easy today!! NO activity for more than thirty minutes and then a nice long rest.
Off and ~~~~~~~~~~~~ like crazy..
Sheila
Oh yummy Maria. Just a sliver of all for me. They look divine.
Aren't you supposed to be resting?
A flock of geese just went over. They sure were gabbing to each other. That's a sure sign of fall. Most of the hummingbirds have left. Anyway I've only been seeing 3 of them. That's if they are the same ones. Had to close bedroom window last night. Could smell skunk. That will wake up a person. That's all in the animal kingdom other then the deer. Dawson is still hunting the moles. Holes from him and them now.
Had ice cream with plum-apple sauce on it last night.yum!yum! DH didn't say anything, so don't know what he thought.
Today have to go to town and get the errands done. Have lunch with a friend. Pick up books at the library. Then come home and do some cleaning.
Have another bucket of apples to freeze. Then maybe a small batch of diced tomatoes.
Green beans to freeze also. If I'm as energetic and organized as some of you I should get that all done. Not! That's more of a dream day.
Hope everybody is feeling better soon. Those stones aren't fun to pass. My DB has that problem. So I've heard about it.
Cherie the iris go in the mail today. Hope it's not too many but you'll have some pretty flowers next spring. There's plenty more. They really grow good on the back hill in all that sun and heat.
Hi and ~~~~~~to everybody else. Having a blonde moment and lost the rest.
Maria that looks good. I just had a pop tart. May I have a Slice? Thank you!
Vicki you have d-mail.........I will watch for them then Thank you.
Good Morning - I'll have a big piece of all three!! They look yummy. I had a big slab of banana bread, but I'm still hungry. Maria, should you be baking??? Take it easy...
Yesterday I didn't do squat....cant believe that I sat and played on the computer all day. I am beating the computer at scrabble. I need to go up a level..
It is cloudy here again today, sure seems like fall arrived overnight. Today my one HAVE to chore is to get the two perennials in the garden!! How many times have I said that....
M5- I quit using lid covers....they were always wet and smelly - and you know why....I got up during the night and went to sit down and found my bottom in the bowl. I almost went into orbit. How hard is it to put the ring down.....grrrr Gonna have some words tonight.....LOL
I am letting myself be on here for 15 more minutes. ~~~ to everyone!!
Maria, those look tasty!
I may have done all I'm going to do today... finally hung my shower caddy for shampoos, etc. LOL.
I still haven't tackled the rest of the laundry monster and our forecast through Sunday is for rain. I guess I could string a line on the back porch, in fact I must as I'm almost out of clean clothes. Good thing I buy underwear by the dozens.
Ernesto looks like just a BIG rainstorm so far, thankfully.
Darius between you and me I'm looking forward to the day that I wash only when I run out of clean clothes.olo
Glad Ernesto is subsiding somewhat, I know how worried you were becoming of your family and friends. Alot of rain but no disater is the way to go.
Good morning. Oh my, sitting down on cold porcelain, what a way to wake up! This toilet discussion reminds me of a fellow we know who went to a wedding, and the minister asked if anybody had any words of wisdom for the success of the marriage. He was the only one who said anything. "Put the toilet seat down". You can emagine the reaction from everyone, and the minister quickly went on with the service.
Maria, your baking always looks so good! Now you need to rest. We are going to keep after you.
Darius, your friends and family in Fla are gonna be really wet but thankfully it is a TS and not a hurricane.
Sarv, I never thought of scrabble online, now I'll have to look for that this winter.
Molly, where are you? I bet you have a lot of pans catching water. I remember when we were putting a new roof on a house and there was a delay after the job was half done. Not even tarpaper on one side and then it rained. We had so many pans, buckets, towels, all over catching drips! The sound was kind of musical since every container had a different amount of water in it. The really fun part was keeping the 2 toddlers out of it. They thought it was a bunch of new toys, and every time I had to empty a pan I had 2 little helpers who thought they needed to empty some too, on the floor. Thankfully it wasn't carpet.
My older female house cat is no longer a house cat. She started spraying in the house and bought herself a ticket outside. I guess it is a good time to make the transition, she is outside a lot in the summer anyhow, and will be sleeping in the haystack and growing a heavy coat for winter. Meezers, have you ever had this with all your kittys? I felt really bad about having to banish her from the comfort of the house, and will feel worse about it this winter. For the past few days I had seen the evidence and kept cleaning up wet spots, not certain which kitty was the guilty one, but then I saw her do it, she ran when I came after her, went under the bed and I yarded her out by her tail and put her out the door. That is the second one I've had to banish, the other was a male who peed on my pillow! I didn't even feel bad banishing that one. I had gone to bed very tired with a cold and didn't smell anything until my pills wore off and the pillow was warm and my face was right in it. UGH. A horrible way to wake up!
Time to accomplish something. ~~~ back later.
Morning everyone!!
Well, thank you Maria for breakfast. I didn't know what I was going to have, but maybe we need to send the 2X4 up there and see if Samson needs it to make you behave? Now don't you go overdoing just because you are feeling a mite better today. Remember yesterday? Okay, now sit down and take care of yourself! LOL
sarv, I've got my DH trained with the toilet thing. *don't use mine!* See ... that works for me! LOL
Hi Pati, and how are you feeling today? I hope you were able to get some rest last night. You did let your neighbors get some rest too, right? I mean ... no sirens, and no flurting going on with any EMT's? Okay ... now, we don't want to send the 2X4 down your way either. Looks like you've got bigger problems to worry about. :-) Is your weather getting nasty yet? I hope it's not raining tooo hard down your way.
Meezers, have fun today. Please come back and tell us about your lunch! I always drool when you mention that place. LOL
Cece, your kids go back to school after labor day? Wow, they've already been in school since the beginning of Aug here. I think it was a lot nicer when schools waited to start. The weather was changing and that gave families time for one more fling. Remember those days with no air conditioning and those fans in the front of the room? Wow!
Ves, sounds like you have a busy day planned. You'll be so proud when you see all your accomplishments. Your garden did real good this year. Maybe I need to look into doing some beans next year. Sounds like everyone has a lot of success with them.
Darius, we've only had 1 small rain band come through last night so far. I've set all my pots out so they can get some of it, but so far ... I might have to do a bit of watering as I didn't get them out quick enough.
Okay, if I missed anyone ... sure didn't mean to ... need to get up from here as I'm dragging today. Stayed up and did some typing for the DH last night. Will BBL Ooops, am ~~~ to Ann!
~~~ to everyone else too!
hHave been resting all morning, I do not seem to be able to sleep at all, I think the meds have that effect, so I thought rather than lying in bed for hours I should do something constructive, hence the backing. Even after that at 3 AM I could not sleep but finally I did till 7 Samson woke me up, lol, right now I feel pretty good.
Ever since I remember I was always a night owl, reading books into the wheee hours no matter how busy or tired I was the previous day and and also am an early riser. Because of my poor eye sight I cannot read anymore, that is too bad,
I think I would fall asleep with a book in my hands as I once did..
The Zucchini bread is very good, did not forget the shortening this time but did not use oil but sweet cream butter,. The coffee cake is topped with fresh Italian Plumbs.
When my daughters come later they will get most of it.
BBL
Mary,
I am here, started posting on a couple threads a few times in the past couple days, but stopped myself. I think I might have had a bit of a mouthy tone. Better sometimes for me to shutup because it's not that important to talk. More important sometimes to listen. Although face to face you would know I can't follow that advise for myself.
The roof was fixed for a couple days, now is leaking again, but we got the tarp up for the time being. Waiting for the Ernesto tropical storm to come and go.
I was wandering around my gardens this morning and decided I better get that paint pen out and re-mark my plant tags or I will lose track of who is who, particularly in the daylily cultivars. Muy importante.
I have had an invite to my db's house in Michigan. He has 2 small apartment buildings that need painting (exterior) I am trying to figure out if I should go or not. It would mean packing up 3 dogs 4 birds, me, Jeremy and paint gear. We would stay in his new wife's other house since it is empty now. We would probably be gone about 3 weeks. During which time, I won't be able to take care of the gardens, flowers and veggies, or find other work here in my own area, or take care of my plant sale business.
Does it sound like I am trying to talk myself out of going? It does to me. I think maybe the spring would be better and I also am not sure my brother really wants to pay my fees. I need to discuss this with him a little more in depth.
But a decision needs to be made soon, because it's gonna get too cold in Michigan to do any painting.
Although on that other hand again, I haven't been to Michigan to see family up there since 2002. Oh some have been down here to see me but I haven't been there.
Decisions, decisions,
Molly
Good morning, all!
Molly, that's quite a quandry. Since you're the one doing the favor (even if he's paying your full rates, it's a favor since he knows he'll get quality work), I think you probably get to pick the timing. If spring is less busy for you and easier to plan, just tell him so. Remember, if seeing family up there is really what's calling to you, you can always go up sometime this winter for a little snow time!
Apples, zucchini bread, banana bread... y'all have been busy!
I made a batch of "slip downs" (ripe cucumber pickles) this morning, and I can hear the lids popping now -- what a nice sound! I had a couple of conversations with my mother, trying to figure out the recipe from some old notes of hers... we had just decided that I should go with a brine that had more sugar than vinegar in it, but then I got distracted by our conversation and forgot to add the extra sugar... so I guess these will be labeled "Aunt Olga's Slip Downs" rather than "Mom's Slip Downs" LOL.
I don't think I have time to make another batch this afternoon, but we'll see.
At least my cup of coffee has made the migraine back off, so I'm fairly functional. I know it was maybe not such a bright idea to have this big family visit right before our frozen embryo transfer (Tuesday) when I can't take meds for the migraines (caused by the hormone injections)... but I also can't let "what ifs" with the migraines rule everything. Jim's brother and family are arriving late tonight, and my brother and family are joining us Friday night, so we'll have a wonderful houseful with 5 kids from 16 months to 7 years old! They're all "easy company" who will pitch in as needed, and I'm not making any elaborate plans for meals or entertainment, so it'll work out fine.
I'm all set for the kids -- I've got 8 fresh cans of play-doh, a new box of 96 crayons plus a set of fat crayons for the toddler, rooms are mostly squared away, and there are lots of toys and games and puzzles available! Even if it rains all weekend, I think we'll have a great time. I'm hoping for some nice weather though so we can play in the yard and chase butterflies around the garden. :-)
Hi again. Just back from the grocery store in Abingdon 25 miles south of me. Just went to see if I could find King Arthur flour... no dice. So I got Hodgkins Mill which I've not used for bread baking before. Ended up spending $90 but that included staples and more frozen red raspberries for my frozen peaches... and will free up some freezer space. I'm dangerous in a halfway decent store!
I just now got out my Tassajara Bread Book and see I forgot that I need molasses or honey to feed the yeast. I KNOW I have molasses, just not sure how many still packed boxes I will have to search to find it. If not, I'll have to go to town but just to Marion.
If we had bought just 2 miles south of here, my address (town) would be Seven Mile Ford. Isn't that a mouthful? and strange... but it was the only place years ago to ford the river.
Molly, can't you get AmarylisGal to check the plants? You need a semi for trips like that!
Jill, starting to cross my fingers for you once again! Just don't get too stressed with all the kids this weekend.
~~~ to everyone else...
Lunch time!! Leftover meat loaf and potaotes...
.
Just got back from Babies R Us - getting a gift for a friends son who adopted from China. We;re going to see her on Monday. Thank goodness we found she had registered, so we just picked off her list. She's a cute little gal, but so tiny....
Mary, I bought the scrabble game. I could play it for free on my computer for 60 min. I went thru that pronto and loved it, so I went and bought it. Now I'm on the look out for Boggle. The game was on sale for 9.99 - a bargain!!
Molly, that's quite a hike to come up to Mich - but a job is a job...Are you getting any calls from down there? I need to follow your advice about my mouth. I control it when I am out, but man does it run when I am home. My sis tells me I say unkind things at home and I really do need to watch it...
Crit - sounds like you are going to have a houseful- what fun!! My kids used to get a kick out of making play dough - easy and fun. DGS was doing something really neat. He traced a picture onto tin foil and then colored the tin foil using permanent markers. Then they mounted it on cardboard and put a black paper frame around it. Sounds harder than it was and everyones turned out really nice. Good luck with the migraines- been there done that...
We stopped at the grocery store and I picked up bacon for tonights BLT's- but forgot bread- drat....
Maria - glad to see you posting. Have you ever tried books on tape? Our library carries a ton of them. I always get them when I am traveling...cannot get enough of reading. The library is one of my favoite places to go...other than gardening center.
Well I just looked at the calendar and I'm starting back to the huff/puff on Fri....I really need to get in gear again...not that I really want to tho..
Well, I need to go back to the store and do some real grocery shopping!!
That project with the tinfoil sounds cool... but with 5 kids this weekend, I'm thinking, just say "no!" to permanent markers, LOL. The adults will have the kids outnumbered (6 to 5), so I'm not worrying about whether or not the crayons are washable, but I don't think giving that crew a set of Sharpies would be wise.
I'm getting any "work" out of the way now, so I'll be able to relax and enjoy our company this weekend. Just have to remind myself, nobody is coming for the food or to examine the corners of the house for dust (hah!)... we're just gathering so we can be together! Hosting company is much easier when you keep that principle in mind. :-)
Well, no wonder I was out of clean clothes... the last batch was still in the basket where I brought them in from the clothesline! Today's batch is finished and strung out all over my LR boxes, LOL. It's bright and sunny outside but thunder rumbling in the distance so I'm taking no chances.
Jill, that's my philosophy on guests too.
Sarv48..
Been a lurker here for awhile, enjoy all the post from y'all...I love Scrabble also.. If you ever want to paly online against real folks(like me)..Go to Internet Scrabble Club and join up.. It;s free and lot's of fun playing against others.. All level of players there..Sorry about busting in on this post.. All have a great day..
Larkie
http://www.isc.ro/
Hey Larkie- please don't feel like you are bustin in!! Pull up a chair.... I don't know if I would be comfortable playing with a real person!! I am a wimp....what if I got a real pro - I am so so. I would be so embarassed....I play with my mom as we are evenly matched (and use the dictionary once in a while!) LOL
Tell me how long you've played....
Back from the store - got a cart load...and some junk food as we'll have company this weekend I am sure..
I was going to make the grape salad we all love and picked up two huge bags of enormous grapes. When I got in the car, I grabbed one to eat it and it had SEEDS!! Now I have to go back to the store and get some seedless. I checked the bags and they don't say anything about seeds....drat. I would have gone back in the store then,but I had 3 gallons of ice cream LOL (you know me....)
Sun is out but it is still windy. I keep putting my sweater on and taking it off. Can't tell if it is a hot flash or the weather!!
Sarv, at least I didn't have to go back to the store! I found the box with the molasses and tomorrow will be spent in the kitchen... making bread and more peach melba jam.
My grapes are ripening fast so I need to find some food grade buckets to use for fermenting. Either that or trade them to Brent for labor, which I might actually do if I cannot afford some buckets. Last ones I bought were about $6. I have everything else.
Sarv....The players have a rated score so you can pretty much pick any level player..If you check it out I am there lots under my own name..Larkie
.. It's really fun.. I have palyed Scrabble for about 40 years(ouch..lol).. I turned 50 this year...
Well, off to feed goats, chickens, guineas and such..Almot too hot here for anything..
Only 98 today, but the humidity is like 100%..We had one heck of a storm last night, lightening like fireworks.. Hit a main transformer and one of our produce ice houses.. and we were out of power for about 4 hours.. 1am til around 5am.. let me tell you it was some kind of hot.. No sleep here for me, dh, the cats or dogs, lol..This old farm is one dark place with no moon and no security lights going.. I'll be back in soon, sweating like crazy.
Larkie
Larkie- I went to the scrabble site and signed up. Then it said to send $29 Did I do something wrong??? I observed a game going on and man the words they used I didn't even know!! Now I really feel insecure....
lol...Some of the players are really good.. As far as the $29.. I don't know.. It's always been free as far as I know.. They do take donations.. I've played here for several years now..Did it create an account and all that stuff..Mybe it was just for a donation.. I've never been asked for any money..Signed up for English, righ?
larkie
Seems I missed breakfast here, so I'll have a little slice of everything that Maria made. Who, I hope, is resting properly and not trying to clean house. (Don't make me come over there Maria!!)
IO1, lunch was delicious as usual, but both DD and I favor their cheeseburgers...and we do want fries with that....I usually doctor mine up with lettuce and tomato which comes on the plate, and a little mayo. Had lemon pie for desert and now I'm really overstuffed and haven't done a lick of work since I came home. Weather was perfect, am so happy that it's not in the 90s any more. I was longing for winter, but I'll settle for a leisurely fall.
Have to agree with Jill and Darius, if your guests come to see if your house is clean, or to eat food they didn't have to prepare, who needs them? I'll just pop out to a movie while they inspect, and then they can go home.
I'd hate to admit how many times I have left a load of clothes in the dryer and spent a half hour rummaging around trying to find that favorite item that's gone missing. And there it sits, in the bottom of the dryer...........
Yup Molly, that's a tough one. Hard to leave when you know plants need tending, and you have to take the whole gang along, maybe you can postpone it until cooler weather sets in and you won't be concerned about a drought. Hard to ask a family member to pay what you are worth, but sometimes people don't value something unless they pay a good price for it.
Can you get any coverage for the roof leak from the seller? It might have happened due to transporting it some distance, but it could have been there before. Is it worth asking?
Jill, never heard of slipdowns, but home made pickles are always good. Good luck with your next session, hope it "takes" and you can escape further hormonal roller coaster rides.
Mary, I have been so very fortunate, the last cat I had that sprayed was thirty years ago, haven't had one since. That cat had been locked in a barn for some unknown period of time due to a feuding couple in the process of a divorce, two cats and two dogs without food or water. I think he was mentally impaired, he used to walk into solid walls, chairs, etc. All my kids are good, but I have a litter box the size of Rhode Island. It's actually used for draining oil from semitrucks, I got it at Farm and Fleet. It's over 2' X 3' and about 9 inches deep and we scoop every day. Of course, a fresh addition of litter requires a dance party by all users.... Your old girl might be expressing her dislike for the new kitty. One of my kids kept one of our cats, and he got into a fight and got pretty banged up. I was concerned that he wouldn't get his salve etc. on time, and be kept inside until he healed so I took him home with me and put him in the spare bedroom. Oh boy. My little blue point, Tasha, was incensed, insulted and furious. She didnt like him as a kitten....and here he was again!! She left a nice deposit of poo on my pillow, and then, when I closed the bedroom door so she couldn't get in there, she backed over the water dish and put one in there. (She drank out of a leaky faucet....not that dish!) What a snot! Never happened again, and he went back to my DS shortly after. They sure can express themselves. Even Olivia, at her tender age, learned to follow the big cats down to the basement and use the big pan instead of the little one in her crate.
Now, if I could cure them of mangling the stuffed toys while I am trying to get to sleep. Last night they were playing tennis with the stuffed siamese cat and lobbing it over the bed. I finally got up and threw Sammi and Olivia out and closed the door. They knew they were in trouble, they didn't even body slam to door to see if they could get back in. Tonight that toy gets put away well before bedtime.
Darius, can you use brown sugar to feed the yeast? I'm hovering over my peaches waiting for them to get ripe.....not today ...but maybe tomorrow. I'm going to give that Pomona's pectin that you recommended a try.
Cece, uh oh, crawling climbing pulling things down baby!!! I suggest you get down to floor level and take a look around and see what's reachable before you are in big trouble. sheesh, if the other grandma can't get there before bedtime, what 's the point of even picking up the DGB? What if you needed to be somewhere or had a meeting at school, are you supposed to schlep around with her on your hip? That's really inconsiderate of her.
Hmm I'm still getting a lot of nothing done here and if I don't get up soon, I'll be here 'til DH gets home. He already thinks I'm on the computer all day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ to all, later.
Sheila
Sheila, yes I could use brown sugar, or honey, but I prefer the taste of molasses, which I did find in a box. It's not blackstrap, just Roddenberry's Old Plantation unsulphured molasses.
Sheila and every onr else who has wished me well and even those that did not, knowing in your heart you did do just that, a BIG THNK YOU!!!
This afternoon I have felt the best since I have been ill, just hoping it will continue to be so. I had to investigate why my vaccum is not working, , I rmoved the bag but I knew it was not full since I just changed it for a new one. I did see that the opening of the opening that fits the bag was full of hair. I began to pull them out but still id did not work. I decided to put a grocery bag to subsitute the proper one and turned on the vacuum , that helped it kept pushing up more hair I had to remove when suddenly with a big poof it worked, lol
I then dried to vacuum but started to cough badly, thought I better stop and continue another day
My daughter just called she is coming , nice
Whooee, good for you Maria on two counts... feeling better, and fixing the vacuum!
And let your daughter vacuum!!! My neighbor just got a 'pet' dyson vacuum and couldn't believe the difference. They have two cats. She said her husband took a swipe at a chair and the strip he vacuumed was three shades lighter than the rest.
Yuck...
I had a cat (spayed, female) once who got in a tiff about something and sprayed - the spray went straight into an outlet! She got a minor jolt, the outlet shorted out, the lamp plugged into the other half blew the light bulb, and you wouldn't believe the *smell* of electrified cat spray!
Maria - so glad you are feeling better, but please don't *overdo* for a few more days. Just because you got the vacc fixed (kudos for that) doesn't mean you have to vacc *everything* at once!
My SIL found a tee shirt for her first grandson -" My real name is NoNo, but my Grandma calls me Precious".
Finally got some rain here - not a lot, but enough to make a good difference.
Got to go fix supper - BBL
ginni
Maria, it sounds like the intake chute was clogged with dog hair. Time for a Dyson!!
Don't want to make dinner, ate too much lunch. Leftover Pizza for DH.
Sheila
Hi folks,
No thread yet for thursday. Ill refrain from starting one. LOL
905am here on thursday - cant find many symbols on this Japanese keyboard. Some type correctly ifyou dont look and just type. Others dont.
Ann
Yippee, my neighbor (Brent's mother) came over to lend me 2 loaf pans. A little small for bread so I'll use those 2 and a cake pan for a round loaf. She stayed and visited a bit and I did some witchery on her. (Some of y'all may know I am a Healer which many consider witchery. Wouldn't know a witch if I saw one!) Anyway, she left with her ankle feeling a LOT better.
I need to get horizontal, maybe watch a little TV before hooking up the monster (O2).
Say Goodnight, Gracie!
Hi everyone,
Maria, thanks for the cyber goodies, but please don't keep pushing yourself! I hope that you're able to get a good night's sleep tonight.
Since it's late and I'm tired, will just wish all of you a peaceful, restful night and I'll be back in a minute to post the link for tomorrow's thread.
Okay, follow me to a new day ---- hope it's a better one for everyone here. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/645987/
