A forum for pairing plants to reduce pests

Monrovia, CA

I am new here and am very interested in pairing plants to advantage. For example, I've heard that garlic, onions or marigolds are natural insect inhibitors. I would like to know more details about pairing plants. Thanks!

Same here -- putting in a bunch of alliums when I get my roses next month. "Roses Love Garlic" and "Carrots Love (Tomatoes?)" are great books on the subject. They include garden plans.

Excellent! Thanks everyone for the info! I will check out the Organic Gardening Forum, and perhaps put in some garlic cloves under my roses...tho they are doing well at the moment. I have been using a watery soap/oil spray on them...!

Princess Nonie...I've heard that Monrovia used to be very different. I do like it here!

Here's this year's experience:

Deer don't like marigolds. Also, marigolds are supposed to discourage root nematodes, but some varieties are better at this than others. Some seed catalogs take note of this.

I put marigolds among roses and annual rudbeckia, hoping to minimize damage from deer and Japanese beetles. The deer foraged among the rudbeckia, anyway, but the roses seem to have done better this year.

(Almost) nothing bothers the garlic. As soon as I harvested it this year, the deer came in and destroyed the lettuce crop. Oh, well.
