Wow Dave You have a LOT of response. I have a probably obscure one, for myself I guess. Desert Gardeners are near impossible to find. I could help if you like.I would be more than willing. I really like this website. I have spent most my time on this scince I have started about 3 weeks ago. The atmosphere is freindlier, and more caring, than a previous one I was visiting. I like the idea for the general notes for the journals. By the way I have an address for our members to do a plan for their garden. May I post it? It is free.Thankyou Michele

Dave, I have another request.
Is there anyway you could have the newest follow-up post come to the top of the page, instead of having to scroll down to the bottom. Since everyone has read them every time you re-check a post?

WOW, Dave, what an undertaking! Thanks a bunch!
My suggestion would be similar to Jan's, an "newbie" forum, where we could go to ask what may seem to be "dumb" questions. Oftentimes, I am reading posts, and I am totally puzzeled, since I have none of the experience so many of you do. So, a forum where we could ask our questions that are really basic. Dave, you ARE the man! Laurie

regarding the idea of a more generic all encompassing journal area where you can track extra stuff like temperature and stuff, I think there is no action for me to take on this. Here's why:

I designed the journal to be fairly scalable so you could do whatever you wanted with it, and track whatever you wanted.

Now go check out Rise Ann's journal. It's at:

http://davesgarden.com/gj/RiseAnn/index.html

(Tbanks Rise Ann for making your journal available to view. Your journal is the perfect example for this).

So, Scroll down and look at her categories. There are some of interest to what we're talking about:

Environmental Factors and Planting Information (0)
Planting Media and Methods (2)
Soil Amendments and Fertilizer (0)

And in here, she adds various notes to herself.

I think this is the way to go. Anyone who wanted the generic journal feature, please try to go the route that Rise Ann took. I think it's the perfect solution.

Dave that is the perfect solution! I don't know why I didn't think of that ... Thanks Rise Anne! I'll be interested in checking back to see how the WSM works out for you.

Take a look at my journal if you'd like, I set mine up similar to Rise Anne's the other day. I entered a category called Garden 2001, and added subcategories such as vegetable garden, pond, flower beds then broke it down even further under flower beds and entered front bed, back bed etc...
If you play around a bit I think you can set it up however suits your needs quite nicely.

jody and Rise: You know... I have to kind of laugh. I never considered actually tracking gardening related stuff in my journal. I saw in Jody's journal that she had tilled, and I thought to myself, "Why am I not tracking that stuff? I'm tracking the 250 plants I'm growing!!" Hehehe - it just goes to show that sometimes the creator doesn't know what to do with the creation until someone else shows him. ;-)

I'm starting my own "Garden 2001" category tomorrow!

Would it be possible to add other columns, "Germinated" so I can fill in the date they germinated, "Transplanted" so I can record the date I transplanted, and last year I recorded two transplant dates, from the sowing flats to larger container to garden. (two transplants) some plants expired on the second one. Also I had plants that expired would like to be able to record that too. Thanks for all you are doing.

Hi Dave,

How about adding members journals to the search page, only if they have marked it as public? You could learn a lot from other people's journal notes about a specific plant without having to search through each journal.

Thanks,
Sharon

Gardendragon,
You really don't need more columns...they way the item's are set up you can add all that info with the date it took place in the action perfomed updates. Dave has kindly made it possible to print a single item so if you want to "finish" it once it's planted you can print out and have a record of sow date/germ date/transplant date/etc. what ever info or notes you enter for that item.
Take a look at a few of mine to see what I'm talking about if it don't make sense...For each item that has been sowed...I entered a status update or action performed when I noticed sprouts, when the were transplanted and placed under lights etc. The journal is great and is somewhat "customizable" to each individuals needs.Hope this helps.
Jody

jody - thanks for the explanation. That's exactly what I was going to write.

Sharon: That's on my TODO.

I bet your TODO list is longer than my TODO list!

I'm trying to get a handle on my TODO. It's largely disorganized, but I'm moving it onto my journal now.

Check out my "Dave's Garden" category. :)

You can now print an individual item. When you go to the view entry screen, you are given two options - Print with images or print without images. That should be fairly self explanatory. Please try it out and let me know if this works well for you.

Well, people have E-mailed me asking me to remove posts, and I have complied. I have purposely not allowed people to delete their own posts, because it would create inconsistencies in the discussion threads.

Imagine is Jane starts a thread. John and Dick both then reply to the post. Then Jane goes back and deletes the thread. Oopsie - John and Dick's posts are now also gone. That's the problem I can't get past.

I see at the Dave's Garden Forum that several people are wanting a true chatroom. I would love that too.
