Where are the best places to order Helleborus? I would like to get a couple more before winter sets in. Thanks, Karen liebran
Ordering Helleborus??
HELP. I still need to know some mail order places that have good helleborous and not rip people off. Thanks, Kaeen
Liebran , this is one of the best things about Dave's Garden! Click on the PlantFiles tab, click on search for plants, and type in helleborus in the genus category. A bunch of helleborus will show up. When you click on one you like, in the top left corner, there is a spot that says '5 vendors have this plant for sale' , for example. The links wll often take you directly to their catalog, and now that you know the company's name, you can see how other dg'ers experiences with that company have been!
Sorry if you knew this already...
Happy hunting!

Thanks, I have been doing that and finding all sorts of places, but I wondered if anyone of you could recommend one from your experiences. Thanks. Karen
To check on how DGers rate the nurseries go to Garden Watchdog. It is so invaluable! I wish I had learned that lesson earlier on, I would have saved myself some expense and hassle.
I don't know about anyone that specializes in Helleborus, but Lazy SS Farm is my favorite for perennials followed by Bluestone. Both are rated in the Watchdog top 30. Lazy SS Farm shipping is very expensive, but the plants are worth it. Bluestone prices are more reasonable, but the plants are smaller. If Lazy and Bluestone had the same plant, I'd probably order from Bluestone if the plant price was the same or lower. Actually, most of Lazy prices for plants are very reasonable; around 6.95 per plant, it's just the shipping you need to consider.
Whatever you do, stay away from Wayside. Way over priced for what you get. I will order from them, but again only for a plant I can't get elsewhere and I usually wait to see if I can get a deal on it in some form or fashion. The last plant I got from them was a hosta I had been lusting for. I was able to get it at the listed price (24.95) along with a free Knock Out Rose.
You must have been reading my mind. I was looking through Lazy S and seeing a lot of neat things. I will check out Bluestone and see what they have. I got 3 original hellebores from Wayside and was lucky they did well, so far. The bigger one bloomed profusely around Easter. The two littler ones are stable but haven't bloomed yet. Thanks, that is the kind of input I was looking for. Karen
I got three Hellebores from Wayside last Fall. I didn't receive them until December (Gal. pots) so I couldn't plant them until spring. But they bloomed from January through June/July. Amazing. I've been disappointed by other things I ordered from them but I have to say the Hellebores are terrific. I'm trying more in 3" pots this year from Northwest bulbs. Other smaller plants I've ordered from them (hostas) have done very well this year.
I don't know if he would ship them, but Curt Hanson has a HUGE interest in them.... he's been breeding them for quite a while and has hundreds in pots (seedlings) he sells for $5 if you visit the garden.... you can find him here in the list of plant sellers... he sells daylilies. Crintonic Gardens in Ohio. He's breeding all types, and various types together. He was even thinking about writing a book on them....
