This is a picture of both parents at the top and the offspring at the bottom. The seed came from the spooned parent, and all of the seed germinated. Some of the seedlings have normal petals, some start out spooned and then open up to normal on the third day. I've been pollinating one of the more spooned offspring with the spooned parent and hope to improve on the effect with the next generation. This is the first time I've ventured into anything like this.
Osteospermum seedlings
very impressive. I have never tried what you've done, but I have bought spooned varities in years past, and they always open up after a day or do--they don't retain the spoon look.
I grew some from seed a couple of years ago and those have come back reliable, whereas potted plants I bought have perished. Don't know what the diff might be.
The spooned parent remains spooned - that picture is of a three or four day old flower. I have to take cuttings at the end of summer to keep mine over - The plants don't do well in the house after having been out all summer, and there is no way they'll survive outside here. I have them in the hottest, sunniest bed and they love it, right up until the third or fourth frost, and then they are gone. I've grown babies from the Passion variety before, but this is the first time I've gotten seed from spooned. It's an adventure!
