Switched to ground covers?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Any of you give up the lawn (grass)for ground cover? pictures? favorites? recommendations?

Crozet, VA

Not yet, but it is in the plans. Our front yard is so steep that with my balance being bad, I have to sometimes crawl back up if I visit the bottom of it.

Our plans include first of all my husband building a soapstone walk way in front of our long deck which has our major flower bed. From there, we will then begin the process of killing the grass, mostly weeds actually. I am thinking that we will be using either newspaper or cardboard to kill the grass and then just cover the hill with mulch. From there we will begin to add our favorite plants in strategic spots. Hubby has already placed several large rocks in front. I will also add garden art here and there.

We are hoping to begin this as soon as things cool off, weather wise. By next year I am hoping that I will know how to work my camera and the software program on here, so that I will be able to share pics of our work with you all.

I have certainly derived untold pleasure with gardening this year. I also feel thankful to have found this website with so much information and some fantastic people.

I hope that some others who have already done away with grass lawns will post and let us know about their yards and gardens.

There's a thread about this now in Indigenous Plants. I'm trying to make the lawn smaller with more flower beds.

Me, too! I have a ditch that really belongs to the county but I'm responsible for, and when other things settle down I want to figure out what to plant it with come spring so mowing will at least be minimal. I hate St. Augustine grass anyway and am trying to replace it as I can. In my neighborhood, you pretty much have to have a lawn, but no need to have a football field if you ask me. And mowing for two hours in this heat is WAY too much for this old lady.

Thanks for the hint, claypa; I'll find that thread.

We have steep hills and I am switching to ground cover. The only mature area is sedum and creeping phlox. To do that area I cut the grass very short, covered it with newspaper, farmpost (aged manure ground up with straw), burlap to keep all in place and more farmpost. I then cut through the layers to plant. I am extending it this fall.

In another area that faces north and gets very little sun I am adding various ground covers. There is a section on the East side that I am killing the grass with black plastic and will plant no mow grass and install a sculpture.
