OK so I have been delinquent ! Weather has been very good. Not too hot, some welcome cloud cover. Just right for trying to get some long suffering projects under way. The raised bed has been a sore point for years and it's time just came. Some 20 years ago, more or less, who can remember?, I constructed a raised bed 12' X 12' using 3 or 4 courses of RR ties. After they rotted (from the inside) I replaced them with concrete 'garden blocks' but paid little attention to quality construction, a failing I still suffer from. So for the last several weeks, between heat waves, I have dismantled 208 of these 25# blocks, dug out walls of dirt in an attempt to provide that elusive "level" swathe for new forms, mix some twenty-five 80# sacks of concrete mix, reset all of the blocks and level the field. Now I'm satisfied, sort of.

Tomorrow it will be time to get back to building the concrete walks and nooks in back by Mackie's Place under the Wisteria and Cherry trees. Oh yes, I need to finish painting the Wisteria Arbor too. Maybe, if I can get a ladder (and some courage) up to the roof of the shed without destroying the garden I can nail up some fascia and hang a gutter or two. That done I can excavate under the back 12', remove the rotted sill and pour a concrete footing. I hope there will be time to pull the rest of the ceiling boards and nails in the sunroom, install insulation, rewire lighting fixtures and replace the lovely 3/8 X 6 inch cedar boards. I guess routine gardening goes without saying. For relaxation I want to get back to working on the Mackintosh window, then I have been neglecting the woodcarving lately too, and that isn't at all a nice thing to do. The calluses go away, or at least move to other places. Immy finishes one Obedience class next week and is part-way through a more advanced one. She is a smart little girl .

Thanks for the nudge Darius. I have been lurking, but seem to get sorta tired and hadn't felt much like 'conversing'. DW is off to the Island tomorrow with 10 or 15 friends from her HS Reunion (which is tonight) so I may have a day off to sit and read and sip a Single Malt or two. But then there is always something that needs to be done, and for the most part I enjoy doing it. Have a pot roast to put in the crock pot in the morning. Taters, onions, squash, parsnips, carrots, celery, garlic and a turnip. Guess the meat is just there to add atmosphere.

Don't mean to be remiss, but there are so many things to get done, so little time, and no help. 'Course I never did get a passing mark in "Plays well with others" in school, and same thing applies to "works well with others" . gee, It aint a perfect world are it . My best wishes to all for happy solutions to all your woes . Too many pictures to clutter up this thread. The raised bed project in in my Diary under 'Backyard Renewal'. feel free to visit.

Well, I intended to get her earlier but..... We went to the Chinese place, and was very well pleased. Had a great buffet, and a good variety of dishes. I once looked at my plate, and realized that I had 4 crab dishes, so I guess I like crab. Stopped by the friends, house, and she had dug and bagged all the purchases. I bought 6 for my sister, and she and I will trade later, so didn't have to pay for mine. BTW, I got 5 new ones!! Do you see a daylily addiction forming?

DGD and I, then started cooking at 9:00 for tomorrow's get together. She made a fabulous jello/fruit salad, and I cooked corn, fresh from the garden. So the evening was a busy one.

Bal, glad to see you check in, I know that you lurk, but you need to let us know what is going on with you. Sounds like you have been too busy to even try to let us know what you are into.

Hope, thanks for the pic, but I pushed my chair way back when viewing the snake. No, I don't think I would knowingly eat rattlesnake. Did you ever notice when someone is trying to describe the taste of something exotic, they all say it tastes like chicken!! LOL.

McCool, glad that you are finally realizing some returns from your garden. Isn't it great that the produce just tastes so much better? Hope that you get time tomorrow to get out there and harvest some more. The fall weather sounds good. They are saying we are heading back into the high temps again for next week.

Mary, moving the snakes would have to be left to someone else. I shriek and run when seeing even the tiniest one. Don't like them, don't trust them, and it aint's gonna get any better. When I was young, about 10 or so, had a city cousin who always came to visit the farm during the summer. Was picking up hay in the field on day, he found a snake (dead) but I didn't know it at the time, he picked it up, whirled it overhead to get some momentum, and let it go, whereas it wrapped around my legs. Talking about a tantrum, I picked up a rock and chased him all over that field. My dad intervened, or I would have bashed his head in. After that, I have just been terrified of any snake, dead or alive. So I guess I have a childhood trauma that I have never overcome.

Darius, shoes are the perfect thing to try to find glass shards with. Several years ago, I broke a jar, and cleaned the area up, and proceeded with life. A couple of days later, I encountered a glass shard, we picked at it, couldn't get it, and I ended up in the emergency room, where minor surgery had to be performed to extract it. Be glad you had a willing neighbor!!

Sarv, don't blame you for not going near the tree with the poision ivy. So still doing the silent "thing". Have you discovered what it is all about?

susueq, glad that you found the time to check in twice on a Saturday. Did the crew return, and shatter your peace?

cece, did DH really take the shovel to work with him? That scoundrel. I would buy an extra to keep, so that you will always have a back up to do with,what you will.

Well, I know that I have missed some, but no slight intended. Since I need to be up early, have to drag this body toward the bedroom. Hope all has a very restful, peaceful night. I hope that I will awaken with no pain, but we shall see.

Good night Gracie.

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

well hope you all have a restfull night . its the usaual for me can't sleep knee feels like i caught it in the gate and was stretched when it went shut..lol.. its gettin me down can't sleep yawn yawn but do conk out no.. then all day i'm worthless as usual any way..

Knolan yes your so right frog legs taste like chicken to ugh.. no way none them things will i eat.. He or she was a big bugger.. I was told yrs. ago to remember the story of the snake and the man who brought him in form cold warmed him by the fireplace? i had not so was told it... interesting that a man would tell you this.. as the snake bite the man.. and we get bite to.. is it bit or bite think last and e silent..lol....

night all.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

Do worms taste like chicken? I guess I'm the early poster, since Hope got in after midnight but hadn't gone to bed yet. It was a lovely night for sleeping, nice and cool. I'm sure I enjoyed it...and trust that it has cooled off enough so that everyone else got in a good snooze. Woke up with Olivia purring in my ear, and DH getting ready to drive to IA to pick up a car he found for a coworker. I'm having breakfast with my DS and DIL and we three are going to the art fair after.

So, Robert, that's what you've been up to. We haven't heard from Ernie for a while so I think he's resting up from Maria's visit. Your new raised bed looks great. You are quite the landscaper! I was trying to talk DH into doing one in the back corner but he didn't fall for it. You've got a list of projects long enough for two men! That will keep you out of mischief while your DW is with her classmates. At least I hope so. That Immy, you knew she was a smartie! I just loved our friend's sheltie, after he got over being shy , he would bring me toys to throw for him. When he figured we were done playing, he would pick them all up and put them back in his toy box. What a sweet boy.

Got my auto ins. premium yesterday, went down $20, so either they've forgiven me for squishing that guy's Miata, or they figure my car is so old it's not worth covering anymore.

Darius, what were you thinking walking around barefoot after you broke that jar? Even those of us who can see know that a bare foot will always find that stray piece of glass that we couldn't find when we cleaned up the mess. I was intrigued with your peach melba recipe, and yesterday I picked up a nice basket of fat blackberries and wondered how they would work with peaches...they are huge compared to my wild ones that grow in the back corner. Didn't get much of a crop this year. Might do up a batch this afternoon, I'll let you know how it works out.

Sarv, all that pollen came off my white tee just fine, I think you can still pretreat it and wash it again with good success. Sure made a mess of mine, looked like a chili explosion! Dirt is a lot harder to get out.

Cece I have spare shovels, just run over here when you need one.

V'ann, he plants all his hosta in mushroom compost? I plant mine in native soil which here, consists of rocks and clay!! No matter how much amending we do, it seems like the ground just swallows up the good stuff and leaves the old. They sure are hardy though, mine grow as if they don't care what their feet are in. My big blue hosta in front of the house looks awful from all the heat and sun. I'm thinking I should divide it and move it where it doesn't get beaten up so badly in July and August. I clipped the flower stalks off the ones along the north side of the house, and they haven't been burnt like the ones in front.

~~~~s to Molly, Elaine, Sgt, Dot, Ernie, IO1, Suzie, WS, Susan, Bonnie, Ves, Corky and whoever else I might have missed. Time to hit the ironing board so I don't embarass my kids, and get myself presentable. See you all later. Have a beautiful day!
Sheila
P..S. I don't remember planting these!! Sometimes CRS provides nice surprises.
Hi all~~~
Managed to keep up reading the posts, but too tired to post myself....the beautiful weather makes it imperative to be outside until I drop! We made a raised bed at the farm yesterday and I got my 30 iris into it. All we did was lay cardboard, put old beams around the edge, and then pile topsoil on, about 6' x25'.
Balvenie-your raised bed looks great now. Seems like there's never time to do things right the first time....
Hope-I did NOT click on that picture of the snake...I'm so put off by snakes I don't even want a picture of one on my monitor!! We have lots of garter snakes here, I'm always finding babies the size of earthworms, and even they make my skin crawl...but I just leave them alone, they're good for the garden.
m5-LOL about earthworms tasting like chicken...yuck. Never heard of the price of anything except tech stuff going down. Good for you!
I have CRS regarding yesterday's posts, although I don't remember anyone having a really bad time...so I will wish all a perfect day and get my poison ivy pocked self into the shower and off to church.
Morning everyone - beautiful, sunny, cool here in Mich. Already did my garden walk and spent several minute admiring my beautiful gardens. - this cool weather really seems to have perked things up.
Bal- good to have you back. I understand what you say about never having enough time and too many projects. Our deck still needs staining, new boards on the picnic table, pool fence needs paint, windows caulked, house/barn trim need painting - it goes on and on... The one great thing about the computer is that you can read the goings on when you want and comment when you want - all dressed in your pj's! Nothing could be finer!! Say, good looking wall you're making there.... As I get older, raised beds look better and better. But we have a semi rasied bed around one of our trees and it is at an awkward height - not tall enough so that I can stand - and too tall for me to sit and weed. Another project waiting to be revamped!
Spent another restless, wakeful night- tossing and turning. My mind just won't shut off and let me rest! A snooze might be in order this afternoon!
Well, the stained shirt needs looking into, so I better get bustin on that!!
~~ to everyone
sarv-Glad you're having good weather...your weather today is mine tomorrow ! LOL. i'm in my Berber fleece robe no less.
Jim Falls, WI(Zone 4a)
Morning everyone!
Was outside with Dawson this morning. All of a sudden I heard the cranes. They were flying overhead. I'm going to have to find a way to carry my camera around. They are here and gone so fast.
Bal .I like your raised bed. I've got some that will need fixing but they worked for 4 yrs. so I can't complain. You keep busy like my Dh does . Thank goodness for handy DH's
Hope my DB gets an over the counter sleep aid from wal-mart that he uses t help him get to sleep. There's also natural herbs out there that will also help. No snakes for me. I didn't enlarge the picture either. SHIVER!
My garden is perking up also. Perfect weather. It's cloudy and cool. Not as cool as the last couple of days but cool enough.
Everybody have a good sunday and hope it is enjoyable. Hi and~~~~~~to everybody.
So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)
Whew, where to start...
suzieq, your stove reminded me of the story about a mother and her young daughter baking a ham. The mother cut the end off and the kid asked why. She had no answer except that her mother always did. So she telephoned her mother to ask why. The mother didn't know either except that her mother always did. Happens the old lady was still alive so they called her. Her reply was simple: the ham wouldn't fit in the oven otherwise!
Who asked about ink pen stains? Believe it or not, saturating the stain with hair spray up close and heavily will take them out. I am proof of that myself, ink stains on a good shirt. I don't know if it works after washing and drying.
As to glass shards and shoes... I only have my work boots here and after a few hours they MUST come off. I guess my boxes of shoes are still in storage in NC. I'm just thankful Brent's mother was home to help me because I'm sure the glass would have worked it's way in further. I do have my sheepskin slippers but the glass would go through them I think.
Robert, good looking bed. More work than I want to tackle! But, needs must if I am to have a flower bed next year. Glad you are okay, we all worry when someone is MIA.
~~~ to everyone else!

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

gGood morning all! I am really furious with myself, made more zucchini breads, two loafs as a matter of fact and a new recipe, you woukd not believe what I did, neglected to include the oil, grrrrrr I have never baked anything with oils, always butter so I guess it went right over my head. what else can I say? am just speechlees , probsably will have to dump it when it is 'done'

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Oh, Maria! I hate it when I do something like that.

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

Good morning. That was me asking about the ink stains, I'm going to try the hair spray. Thanks, Darius! How's the foot this morning?

Twyla, I didn't enlarge the snake picture either, he looked big enough on the thumbnail size. I could see that the man was holding the snake toward the camera a ways and that tends to make them look much larger, but I think you said 9 feet, and so I didn't need to look. I remember a fish picture taken that way, the fish was large but when it was held at arms length toward the camera with the man standing in the background, it doubled in size! That was the effect they wanted, for a fishing vacation brochure. I was there when they took the picture and know both the fisherman and the photographer. Not quite truth in advertising.

And speaking of that, when I unwraped a 3/4 inch wide bandaid the other day I noticed that the wrapper was much larger. So, I measured the bandaid, it was under 3/4 inch, and the wrapper was 1 1/2 inch wide and an inch longer than the bandaid. So my question is, whatever happened to "truth in packaging"? As I recall, people were concerned that a new package of cereal was only about 2/3 full, things like that. I know that they do say that contents may settle during shipment, so I guess that covers them. With modern packaging methods it seems like they could mechanically shake the packages a bit and then add more product. Bandaids may fall into another category since the box tells you the size of the product. So why do they waste so much paper to package it so it looks about twice as big and you can't even see that until you open the box? You can see that little things bug me sometimes. On the other hand, some big things don't, for instance, Robert's wall.

Robert, I went to your homepage and looked at the project step by step. What a job! My guess is that you are an engineer of some type, and that the unplanned spiral bothers you. It wouldn't bother me because I would just plant some bushy hanging type of plant there and let part of it cover the jog in the wall. Or I would cut a stone with a slant and "finish" the end. I probably wouldn't have rebuilt it at all, but that's just me, I like things causal. It's going to be pretty when it is full of plants, so be sure to show us when it is green and growing.

Maria, don't dump the bread, crumble it up and put ice cream on it like it is supposed to be that way.

Meezers, what a pretty suprise plant you have growing. I think it is salvia, and I always intend to grow them and never have. They do light up a space dramatically. My flower beds could use some blooming, happy looking plants about now. The heat and dry winds really did them in and I am pulling the ones out that experience tells me will never revive, and cutting others back. I will have several big wheelbarrow loads to take down the hill to the burn pile.

Well, I have sat here long enough, need to get moving. Son and Daughter in law are coming out to pick some vegies, and I need to give Patch a couple of hours in the hills. I'm still sitting here in my bathrobe. Lazy me. See you later. ~~~

south of Grand Rapid, MI(Zone 5a)

Darius- go to wally world and get yourself a cheap pair of flip flops!!

Mary it is almost 11am here and I am still in my pj's too. Laxy day in our household. DH is dressed, but he's been reading the paper for over an hour.

I am so pleased with my gardens this year. I always run out of color by this time and I consciously added lots of annuals that add continuous color here. Patting myself on the back!! Things still look so colorful!

Well, I need to get some duds on and get a roast in the crock pot..

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

After I telling you my mistake, I poured a half a sick of butter on each on the still not baked bread, when done took it out to cool, it is pefect just had a slice it is just yummy, (sigh of relief) so have some with cream cheese, giving the other loaf to my daughter who just came back from staying at the beach

HI all I am the king of lurkers not Bal lol and Bal hey I am the King of do over to. I just may be the King of procrastinators to but I do understand when you say so much to do so little time and never the third hand when needed . I love it when Linda says and this is MY lol.

Babs so nice you surfaced sorry about your mom I hated it when I had to take my mothers car and when I had to submit to her assisted living and the move to the nursing home. Some of these things give us one real choice. Sorry I couldn't bring Maria to meet you but I did take her to deception Pass. Chin up it will get better.

Time to do something off to plant about 50 lavender 30 Russian sage and a few perrinal salvia plugs that a friend that farms a garden market gave me plus some fall cole veggies maybe the rabbits will let me have these .

Have a good day all. Ernie

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

Man, Ernie... I'd LOVE to have 30 Russian Sage. What a great border, and the bees and hummers love them. Same with lav's but I don't do so well with them in my zone.

Got all my canning paraphernalia from yesterday washed, along with the rings and jars. Will box up the jars when they dry. Started a batch of plain applesauce, still have half a bushel of apples left, and the half bushel of peaches which are in the fridge.

Lake Toxaway, NC(Zone 7a)

do you make apple butter. I love that stuff. After living in hotels as a child, when I visited my aunt and uncle in the country in Connecticutt, I loved her home cooking. She raised, canned, and froze so much. Her apple butter was wonderful.
I have spent the morning mopping. I am a notoriously bad housekeeper but I have company coming today to dig plants. She and her husband were stock market brokers but have semi-retired, only keeping accounts of a few special clients. So they live in a higher echelon of life than me. However, she is very friendly and funny and loves to garden. She took the Master Gardener's course, too. But most of all, she is a fabulous quilter. She is now the state's chairwoman for the guilds' council ( I forget the name of the organization).
I have a spot on my living room that needs a wall-hanging..........

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Hi folks,

I was gonna say good morning, but when i finish typing it won't be morning anymore. I popped in early, but didn't want to be the first REAL morning person after having started the thread. Then off to church. Brought home 7 of the 9 foam slabs that my handbell choir uses. The first 6 were all covered about 10-11 years ago with old sheeting. The other 3 are newer. (Two are a softer foam and covered in a different color broadcloth. Since I could only get 8 in my car, I left the two blue ones to work on another time). The foam cover is, after all those years, quite dirty even though we have practice covers for it. It suddently occurred to me that if I didn't tackle them this week before we leave, it would be autumn and we'd be using them again. The challenge will be to see whether I can get the covers off the foam without their tearing. Since most are old sheeting and on the first ones I sewed the Velcro went the short way on the foam, I don't think those chances are very good; so I may be in the market for new broadcloth.

Robert - so glad you stopped by and reported in. Lurking isn't the same you know. Hope you enjoy that single malt.

Sheila - glad your white T came clean. I need to go check mine - it's still wet in the washer. I put in a load before heading out to church. Nice Salvia. I've never had any self seed. They look good bunched together. I know I'd never plant them that close, but maybe I should try it. let's hope Sarv has good luck too.

Dorothy - somehow I missed it if you told us about the poison ivy. Hope you heal fast.

Darius - great cure for ink stains if you have hair spray around. Glass might go through you slippers, but I bet it wouldn't get as deep into your foot as fast though. Good later suggestion to get some flip flops. But has anyone looked at the price of them now that they are trendy? $ stores maybe. One can always hope.

Maria - great save on the zucchini bread. Have you tried substituting applesauce for oil? I don't do it much, but it seems to provide good results.

Mary - I hadn't actually measured bandaids lately, but you make a good point. Also, if you carry bandaids with you in your purse, they are going to get shopworn much faster if the paper envelope is too large. (I guess that makes us replace them faster. NOT The spares in my purse are in a zippered compartment that I don't look into often.

Hi Ernie. Hi Woodspirit. Hope you get that wall hanging .... LOL

Gotta go get the laundry from the washer and do a dark load and get lunch.

Just had the nicest thing happen. Old neighbors dropped off a mini-mouse for me to use with my laptop- oh it is the cutest litle thing - about three inches long. I took pics of their kids camping and burned a CD for them to have the pics for printing. One good turn deserves another (my DM always said that LOL)

DH is still working on the tree debrie...I'm here LOL

Maria- that bread sounds delicious- good save on putting in the butter!! Put some on the table please...

LOL at Mary and the bandaids!! It's the little things that bug us!

Just had a scoop of mint choco chip ice cream-there's more if anyone wants a scoop!!

We had a busy wknd. Fri night was a benefit for a friend's step-daughter. She was born with spina bifida but the past few years has been having additional difficulties with that defect. I always thought that was a stable condition - fixed as best they could after birth and then that's what you lived with the rest of your life. Not always so, this little 8 year old is having multiple problems. The worst one is a growing bulge of spinal fluid at the base of her spine. It's very rare and they decided to try a shunt at Mayo to drain excess fluid. If that's doesn't work, they have few other options. So friends and family hosted this benefit for her. They really did a lot of work for it, they auctioned for 3 hours and 15 mins! All donated items, lots were quite pricey. We got a 5 ft windmill, a birdfeeder, a set of Snowman dishes and two different gift certificates. I just love the windmill! DH says it's too pretty to put outside, we should keep it in the livingroom - no dear, it's going outside. lol

I worked Sat, then went to DD and sewed up the arm on her chair. She thinks she can't do it, but she knows mom will do it better and faster, ha ha.

DD and DGD sang in their church this am, so I went to their church, left half way thru and picked up Aunt Jo, MIL and made it to their church 5 mins late. Not too bad! DH and I had lunch there and then made arrangements with a 2nd cousin to bring them home. We didn't feel like staying for second service.

DH tore out the laundry room on Tues. and still does not have the washer replumbed. I have NO clean clothes. I wore dress clothes to work Thurs and Fri and probably will again tmr. I suppose I could load everything up and run to Sioux Falls to a laundromat but that does not enthuse me at all. It will be great when it's done, the dryer and washer are going from the east wall to the west wall because the dryer was vented thru the garage and then outside and the hose was very long, over 12 ft. We had problems with moisture in the garage, the dryer overheating and water in the hose in the winters. A royal pain! Now it is just a 2 ft hose, right out the wall to the back yard. That is all done, and the new water pipes are in upstairs, but not yet in the basement. He also has a washer tray installed with a drain to the basement sink so we should never have a laundry room flood again.

The cupboards beside the W/D and above it are all installed too. The other side is getting a 30" pantry cupboard, then 36" sink base cupboard, 30" bottom drawers and another 30" bottom drawers. Above the sink base will be a rod for hanging wet clothes, then two 30" shelf cupboards above the base drawers. An 8" countertop will finish it off. YIPPEE! I'll be in laundry heaven when it's done! lol

So, who has grown daturas? Do I need to use a cotton swab to pollinate them? I'd like some seed and so far, nature isn't working. :) .....here's a pic of my new windmill....

MMMM I'll have a scoop of that. Back from the art fair, and I'll post some pictures for you. The artists ask that they not be distributed so that they get on the internet, but I think they are safe here as long as no one sends them on to someone else. Lots of artists doing stained glass work, and blown glass. Lots of fiber arts and jewelry which isn't of much interest to me, except to look at. I bought one garden piece, it's the kitty in the first picture. I'll post the others one by one.

Nice windmill! Great buy and for a good cause. Double benefits! I wish my washer had a drain that led somewhere. My dryer vent runs through the wall between the garage and the laundry room and then outside, How stupid is that? When we had our duct work cleaned they cleaned that out too.
But it is great having a place to hang things, and storage above...mostly I like it being on the same floor as where we live and not in the basement.

I need to go shower, as church is in about 50 minutes. So I will check in when I get home.

Glad the weather seems to have moderated for most, it is still hot here, and I have sweated profusely all day, so in order not to be banned to the far back corner of the church, need to get deodorized.

Im using my new little mini mouse- it is sooo slick....

Nice things you purchased gals...I think I need a shopping trip - oh ya, I had one and bought clothes. Did I tell you about the short capris I got? Well, I tried on one pair and they fit, so I picked up a second pair and wouldn't you know it they were like a second skin. I had already ripped off the tags and decided I would just wear them around the house (indecent for wearing elsewere) Anyhow, they grew and grew and grew. By the third day (ya I wear my bottoms over and over) I could grab a bunch of material on my hip on both sides and pull it out. They were huge!! However the waist band was still snug, but the tight butt seam loosened up (very uncomfortable ...yeeeowww)

Well, corn is done, so dinner time! bbl

HIYa, folks...

I decided today I need to invent something. Cranking the handle on my Foley Food Mill is time consuming just to skin apple or tomato skins and seeds. I think I can adapt a small motor to run at maybe 30 RPM's. Have to figure a hook up so the electric isn;t near the juice.

I don't know how Bonnie (Defoe) does as many jars a day as she does. Superwoman I guess, and a bigger stove!

No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Got a good inch or more of rain this evening. Now I don't have to water tomorrow. Get caught up on deadheading.

I'm so happy the worst of the bombsite is done!!!!!!!!! I ended up with almost a 5 gal. pail of glass and metal. Not to mention added to my pile of rocks. I'm so happy!!!!

m5 sounds like a great art show. I love Stained Glass. That Kitty is so Cute!! Can you tell I'm Happy!

kooger you got some good deals. What are the plans for the Windmill?

darius no ideas for Gracie other than to drug her or have Brent hold her. No matter what not a pleasant task.

That was my exciting day so nite everybody. I'm going to go read.

waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)

What did Gracie have stitched, Darius? According to the vet she was already spayed. ....You could try taking them out yourself if you have a very sharp small scissors, and some one can help hold her, but I wouldn't recommend it. I've taken them out of my kids, to save the cost of an office call, but you can yell at your kids to hold still! Better let the vet be the bad guy, she might not forgive you a second offense.

Kooger, I don't know where I'm going to plant the kitty, but I need to get a longer support, the one that came with her is only about 12" . I love her little necklace and the dangly gems on her tail. When I get her planted, I'll take a better picture.

Mary, that's salvia all right, I just don't know how it got there? Birdie poo? Especially with them so close together....we get odd little outcroppings of sprouted bird seeds in the lawn, so maybe these were donated as well.
I agree with you about the "truth" in packaging...and everything seems to have twice as much outer wrap as it needs. Some of that bubble pack over things that you buy is almost impenetrable without a hack saw. Items that come in boxes, are also bagged inside the box, more than half of our trash is wrappings, and bags and cardboard.

I think my son had a lesson in aging parents today. Parking in the area where they had the art fair is minimal. We left my car at his house after breakfast, and took DIL's car. We circled the area several times, and the third time we passed the site, I said, "Stop here, and let me out. I'll wait here until you park. " When we left, I asked how far away the car was, and he said about 8 blocks, (DIL rolled her eyes) and I said, "Pick me up here after you get to the car. He looked at me, and I said, "these feet and these knees are not fit for another mile on concrete!! Your mother is getting too old to hike all day without pain!"

Good save on the zuccini bread, Maria...I like cream cheese on just about any kind of breads. But I'm eating a bowl of peanut butter ice cream at the moment, so I'll save my slice for tomorrow morning!!

Bonnie, I hope you are going to sit and rest after church tonight...I am staying off my feet this evening for sure!! I hope everyone had a good day. We are supposed to get rain tomorrow, but you know how that goes...

DH isn't home yet. Five hours there, five hours back, they (him and his buddy) left at 6:30 and even adding in a hour for guy talk with the seller, he's running a little late.

Sarv, I don't think I could use my laptop if I didn't have a mouse....it makes life much easier not having to use the keys for everything.

~~~ goodnight, time to put my feet up and be lazy.
Hi guys,
I did manage to get out into the garden this morning and picked the beans, a deformed zucchini, a yellow squash, an a couple of plum tomatoes. My poor garden is looking terrible this year and I've about decided that I'll just get what I can out of it and wish myself better luck next year! It's a sad time when the ZUCCHINI can't make it! I don't know what's wrong this year --- lousy weather, neglect, Oriental beetles (couldn't afford the parasitic nematodes that I usually put in in the Spring), or a combination of all of the above. On top of all that, I found that I've pulled another joke on myself. Apparently I managed to get my yellow squash and pumpkin seeds mixed up. Consequently, at least half of the yellow crookneck squash that I planted is actually pumpkin! Anybody got any good pumpkin recipes besides soup, bread, and pie (I don't even actually LIKE pumpkin pie -- prefer squash pie!)
Thought that I'd better try to do something about the hayfield in our yard as DH hasn't been able to mow the grass and I haven't had time. I started out but didn't get too far before the lawn mower cut out and refused to re-start. DH yelled at me as though it were my fault, then came down and apologized a little later. We're both hoping that it was a thermal cut-off switch as we really can't afford to replace the mower at the moment.
We went out this morning and bought a water dispenser and a couple of 5 gallon bottles of water. We were getting Poland Spring water delivered here, but it cost us $8.00 a month to rent their dispenser and we paid extra for delivery AND could not seem to get it through their heads that leaving bottles of water outside in below freezing weather was not a good idea. By the time we got home at night we'd find cracked bottles full of ice. Our well water can be used for washing, etc. once it's run through a heavy duty softener, but it still tastes as though it's been sitting in a keg of nails for a couple of weeks and I just can't drink the stuff. Miss Miceus just has to have some from the faucet every morning and then she usually goes and heaves her breakfast because of it!
Not a real productive day as you can see --- and on top of that I had to go and indulge a craving. I really don't care much for ice cream, but once or twice a year I'll decide that I'd really like a cone or (worse!) a small sundae. We went to Friendly's (fat city) since we were out anyway and had some really awful stuff, French fries AND ice cream!
Robert (balvenie), nice to see you again. You've been busy as usual and have gotten far more accomplished in the past month or so than I'll probably get done in a decade.
Mary, thanks for the theme ideas for DH's birthday. I had thought of that (one of my brother's workmates did that for him for his fortieth), but DH is feeling bad enough, though he's making jokes about it, that I don't think I want to emphasize it. Neither of us is thrilled about getting so old. I'm not far behind him and it still amazes both of us that we've been together for twenty years.
darius, don't know what to tell you concerning Gracie's stitches. I do think you need a helper if you want to try to take them out yourself. If someone can hold her by the scruff of the neck it should immobilize her, and I doubt that you're taking them out would alienate her any worse than stuffing her in a crate and taking her back to the vet would. That said, I'm afraid that I don't know the proper way to take out stitches. Would the vet give you instructions if you called? Sorry about the canning mishaps. I'd say you should wear your slippers. It might not prevent your picking up a glass shard, but it certainly can't hurt and might possibly help. Thanks for the advice on ink stains. I've never used hairspray myself, but my mother probably has some.
M5, nice plants! Isn't it nice that some garden surprises are good ones? Glad that you had a good time at the art fair. I have to do a craft fair in a couple of weeks and am actually dreading it this year instead of looking forward to it. Getting too old, I guess.
Hi kooger. nice to see you here again. I sure hope that the first try at your friend's stepdaughter's problem works. That's an awful load for an eight year old to bear. How's things otherwise? Your laundry area re-do sounds great. I wish we had room to do that too.
sarv, so glad that you got the gift of that mini-mouse. We bought a travel mouse when I bought the laptop for my store. The built-in panel's good for only so much. I hardly ever use it --- mouse is much better.
Maria, glad you were able to salvage your zucchini bread. I don't think I'm going to be making any of that this year as my garden just isn't up to snuff.
Bonnie, you sound busier than the average bee, as usual. Will try to catch up with you tomorrow.
Hi dmcd, ernie, Twyla, ves, V-ann, woodspirit, I01 (where have you been?), GG, cece, and anyone else I've inadvertantly left out. Good night to you all.
waukesha, WI(Zone 5a)
Quick P.S., it's the alcohol in the hair spray that removes the ink. Try straight alcohol on the stains, with a good size wad of paper towel underneath so the stain just doesn't spread. You can use a Q-tip or just drop a little on it, then move the paper towel to a clean spot and do it until the stain fades. Good luck. Some of the inks are made with other dyes now but alcohol is the trick. If it doesn't work, try drinking potable alcohol and it will help to ease the pain of losing the shirts.
Hit there,
CRS has hit and I'm not gonna take the time to go back up the thread tonight. Whoever was having the difficulty with Zucchini - did you start it from seed? I started two different types and have, I think, 2 plants of each. One is producing at least one zucchini each day. the other is producing flowers. Lots and lots of flowers, but no sign of any zucchini forming. I'm tempted to compost it before we leave on holiday. I know which variety I'll grow next year.(I DID mark them).
Will be working with a member of my bell choir tomorrow to cut and sew 5 new covers for foam slabs. Since they covers were 10 years old and some of them were made with old sheets to start with and since the foam is also 10 years old and bits were tearing off when I stressed it, I cut off those that had the opening across the short side of the foam. Found promotional broadcloth for 99 cents/metre and will salvage and re-use the Velcro.
I won't try to comment on any others above, but have read them all. Will be back in awhile to start the new thread for tomorrow.
Whoo Hooooo I have internet again. I actually managed to get on today read a few threads and then bam nothing. DS hit some buttons for me and I am back up and running. Gosh how I have missed you all......
Babs, my heart, thoughts and prayers are with you all the way. Do what you feel you have to do. That is all that your parents would want. Most dont want to be a burden on their children. My parents were grateful for me taking care of them until the end but both said that they would have understood completely if I had needed to place them in a care facility. My dad didn't know why I wouldn't do it to him. ( I had made a promise and I have a real issue with breaking promises).
Defoe we pay about 10.00-12.00 a bushel here for ripen tomatoes that is when you can find them. I also paid 3.98 for two alvocado's.
Molly, fall garden already really???? I am still having 105 weather here and cant imagine fall crops yet. I was think closer to Sept- Oct for those. Guess I better get my butt in gear and start documenting this in the handy dandy notebook for reference next year.
Cece, we share the same birthday. Glad that you are finally getting the pond going. I have been watching and learning how to get around the DH with all the issues. I have been telling him about the problems with your Bother in law and how I wont stand for someone who doesn't have a clue involved in the decisions. Hopefully preparing him for this now will help later. LOL
Defoe, I hope that your back feels better tomorrow. Maybe if you just gently place some of those tomatoes in a small box and mail them to me to lighten your canning chores your back pain will reduce some. LOL Just Kidding.......
After you go to this class I would be interested in how to close a pool for the winter. Here we really dont do much different except the decrease in chemicals and back flushing the pool filters to clear out all the gunk.
Mary I am queen of the microwaved dried clothing. I am forever having to do this. You can dry polyester and such on the defrost mode of the micro. Just do it a couple minutes at a time and shake them out between each drying time. My son would have flinched at your fish eat friends comment. He loves to watch the fish in our tank.
DH invited two of his cousins over for dinner and swimming. Them, their spouses and kids were alot of fun to have around. We were saying that maybe we would do this again soon before the weather gets to cold to swim. DH made his first BBQ'd brisket tonight. It was really tasty. Next time I think he should rap it in foil to hold in the moisture a bit more. The temps reach somewhere in the teens today but it was not as noticable being in the pool at the time.
Good to hear that some of you are starting to have cooler weather in the areas that you are use too. The high heat is hard to deal with when its a common issue but when its not and your are not prepared for it heat can be miserable.
I have 60 gallon fish tank and when I do the twice a year cleaning I alway take the water from it to the garden. No matter what is green it is always greener and healthier the next day.
Darius, I am jealous of the apple butter. When mom would make it I would eat it out of the jar by the spoonful. Sometimes I would even lower my standards a place it on a peice of homemade bread. LOL
I will have that again soon. I have planned out an area for 4 apple trees among the other fruit trees. I know that I want some granny smith's for sure but still debating on the others.
Vann, I am not to sure as to when you are leaving for you vacation but just wanted to make sure I told you have a great time and enjoy Japan. My son is quite envious of you. We are secretly planning a senior trip for him there for a graduation present.
I am losing battery power on this laptop just trying to read the posts. Hopefully I will figure this issue out and get it all figured out soon. Please know that all that has occured I have read and cried with some and laughed with others. DH thinks I am insane and on some kind of mission with DG on the brain most of the time.
Take care all..... Miss you everyday..... ~~~~~~'s to everyone......
Casey
