Coffee and ... for Wednesday, August 9
Did anyone notice what an infamous date this is????
Susan
=^..^=
Happy Birthday Susan, sit back relax and enjoy "your day".
Happy birthday Susan, hope you have a good one and good morning to all of you!
Defoe, about the roasted tomatoes, I do not have a recipe for them, all I do is slice them, using two cooky sheets drizzled with olive oil adding chopped onins and garlic, salt and pepper. Set oven at 450' after 20 minutes add finely chopped basil and oregano and swtch sheets roast for another 15 minutes or so.
I finally have heard from Babs!! She wanted you to know her mother is very ill and will not live much longer. Babs promised her father always to take care of her but she finally had to take her Mom to a nursing home it became too much for Babs at caring 24 hours a day. This broke her hear, (I know all about that)!
Babs will be posting here as soon as she possibly can
Susan---- it is not a infamous date. The infamous date was 7 December. They got what they bargained for. Hate to say it but i would like to see the same tbing happen in the in Iran. SOON.
Happy Birthday Susan! I'm so sorry to hear your fibromyalgia is back and that you've completely given up on ever getting rain again. This is one time when we could wish it WOULD rain on your parade!! I sure hope you have a great day despite the pain and that you get a break in the weather SOON!!
Maria-I'll keep Babs and her mom in my prayers, thanks for the update. That is a heartbreaker. Thanks for the roasted tomato recipe. I have a counter full of tomatoes!!
defocat-Oooh let's not think about SAD right now!! I get so down by March with no light....Meanwhile we're about the best part of the year here. It was 55 when I got up, and it will warm up to 70, no bugs, crystal clear air, just perfect for whatever you have to do (such as process veggies) I'm going to live in the moment while I have a good one!
And once again I forget what I was wanting to post...shoot...okay ~~~~~ for now, I'll go check again.
Happy birthday to Susan, (9kittymom) eat some cake for us! Hope you have the day you wish for, and it is pain free. My youngest DD has fibromyalgia and it is very difficult to deal with. Her dr. describes it as arthritis of the muscles, without the relief of aspirin or meds.
Yes, historically this day has some bad memories.
What? You can't see the fruit of my labors? Hope the new pics will help. I thought you all had vegetable eyes! LOL
It was so delightfully cool here last night, all the kids were snuggled in with me this morning, Olivia snuggled next to my ears, purring like a motorboat. Until she decided she needed her breakfast and started nibbling on me. So I'm up and only a half cup of coffee awake so ignore any typos.
Nice Huskies Darius. They have a variety of cherry tomatos here named cherry 400, because they produce so many. I didn't plant one, since I knew I'd get the yellows. I eat them by the handful. If I get a good crop from my other two plants, I'll roast some and freeze them for winter time. They are so good that way with the flavor intensified.
Bonnie, I'm kind of a SAD victim too, but I usually get it more in Nov. and Dec when our days are gray and overcast. When it gets really cold here in Jan and Feb we get more clear skies and sunshine. Last year I bought one of those high intensity natural daylight lamps, which are supposed to help. They've come way down in price. I have it in the guest room next to my sewing machine, because it helps a lot sewing with dark fabrics, but I move it out for reading during those dark days. I do think it helps. I think I paid about $20 at Sam's for the table top variety, but they have floor ones too.
Thanks for the reminder McCool, I need to go in to the Address Exchange and change my address to Noway Puppylane.....
I don't know where everyone else was last night but we didn't eat dinner until almost 8 because DH decided to go out and cut the grass, so everything was on hold until he got done. So, by the time I cleaned up the kitchen and put the morning coffee on, all I had enough energy to do was flop on the couch and read.
OK, now can you see my veggies?
Morning everyone - HAPPY BIRTHDAY 9kit - and how many candles should we put on the cake? What fun thing are you doing to do on your special day?
I had a restless night again -sheesh this is getting tiring (a pun...) I almost am thinking about asking the doc for something...
Been out watering already this morning- did a garden walk - swatting mosquitoes all the while.
I've been with Dsis for three days and haven't done diddly squat in the house and it has gone to wrack and ruin! I'm starting to dig out at 8:30...now make me get off here by then!!
Even tho it is still warm here, there is a feel of fall in the air. Makes me sad and happy at the same time. I know my garden walks will cease and I will be stuck inside - but I have great hopes of cleaning out all my closets.
DIL's grandma is dying - they gave her 6 wks to live. She needs hospice now. She has OCB and the family had to literally 'dig out' their house. DS said he took a shovel to the basement. There were can goods stacked to the ceiling, bags of food in a heap taller than he was. How sad - she was a nurse too!! My kids rented a dumpster and are loading it full. I offered to go help, but DIL said her grandma would be mortified knowing that I saw her mess. They haven't been able to do dishes in the kitchen sink for years as it was plugged up. I am appalled at things like that!! To see the couple you would think they were impeccable - always nicely dressed and very well spoken.. Anyhow, just thinking of outsiders having to come in my house has made me decide that I need to toss out some stuff too!
Well, time for me to get going - I'll be back in an hour or so for a break!!
Victory at last, now I'll try the tomatos....if it doesn't work, I'll give up!
Sarv, glad you had a good time with your DS. Housework will wait, it always does. I just dumped four bags of closet excess at the Goodwill yesterday, but it didn't seem to make an impact. Have a good breakfast....did someone say you are into healthy eating? LOL
Happy Birthday Susan, hope your feeling better soon.. much happiness always..
Maria so sorry about Bab's mother its hard very hard to take care of parent.
Sarv, sorry about your dil's grandma, but way back then people stocked up.. sad what waste though to.things just happen to.. i need to clean out to lots lots junk..
everyone Helloo and have great day..~~~~~
Sheila, I saw them the first time. Just was gonna wait on a response until I really had time to write something. They look great. I thought I started some eggplant seeds this year, but don't know what happened to them. I do have some unidentified seedlings out on the patio, but don't think any are eggplants.
Susan - it was good to see you stop in last evening. Sorry you haven't been feeling great. I bet the walking helps. Never give up hope that you'll get rain again, but keeping all your lovely hostas happy without it can be a real challenge. Have a happy birthday.
Sarv - cleaning out that house is a real challenge. Sounds even worse than my mother's and hers was a real challenge.
Maria - thanks for the update on Babs. Did you get a sense whether she checks in to D-mail?
Well, it looks a nice day here. Plan to walk in to the food cupboard - will take me about 45 minutes. Got most of the weeding done on the weekend; so I don't need to spend time in the garden. I still have a dirty house. Should do something about that, I guess.
Have a great day, everyone.
Ann
Good morning all, up early, because I have the arm pain back again. It is probably from all the canning I have been doing. It is another overcast gray day, rain predicted, but they predicted that yesterday and last night too, no go. Today is grocery/errand day, so will be MIA until that is done. DGD came back last night, and she is sleeping in. Came back with a cold that she got from her little niece, sure hope she doesn't decide to share with me.
M5, I know just exactly where Puppylane is. So no problem shipping your "designer dog" to you. Gosh your eggplants are good looking, evidently didn't have my vegetable eyes on last night when I looked at those pics.
Oz, it is indeed an infamous day. Why haven't we learned from the past about wars and skirmishes?
Thanks Maria for the instructions on roasting tomatoes. I have heard they really perfume the kitchen, and are really good eating too. Gonna try it, and maybe some roasted sauce also.
dmc, I do well in the fall and do not seem particularly effected by SAD, but the cold winter months are really bad. I guess it is because we can't get out and play in the dirt.
Well, guess it is time to start waking DGD, and hear her snarl and complain about having to get up. She is very pleasant normallly, but don't try to get her awake.
Be back later.
M5- I wish I could/did eat healthy. I might as well face up to the fact that I just love 'crap' food. I'm just trying to eat more fruits/veggies along with my junk! LOL
I was supposed to be cleaning 8 min ago. Someone whack me with the 2x4..
Happy Birthday, Susan. Ann, I love the way you start our daily coffee threads.
I am so disgusted with myself that I could weep. As a new part-time employee of the library, I was amazed and pleased to learn that the Friends of the Library hosts an annual dinner for all employees. I was really looking forward to that dinner. I forgot it. It was last night. They had reserved a meal for me. I am dreading going into work and being asked where I was.
So-o-o I'm gonna lie! I did leave my car windows down and we had a monsoon so my clothes got wet but dried out before the dinner. I went to my other job and when I got off there, I went to Wal-mart to buy a DVD recorder and a toaster, two things I lost in a bad lightning strike. When I came out of Wal-mart, the skies opened again and I got soaked all over. I mean drenched! My hair was as wet as if I had just gotten out of a shower. So I went home. That will be my excuse even though the second thunderstorm was after the dinner began. Ah well, I'm trying to save face here......

Well I lost everything because I lost my service just as I was posting. I'm not trying to redo it all.
Happy Birthday 9kittymom May your day be what you want Sorry about yor Mother.
Hope everybody has the day they want and the weather they need.
Ann, I don't think she will look up D-mail at this point but will as soon as she possibly finds enough time to get on coffee, she just wishes a prayer for her mother if any of you so wish and will thank everyone for it.
Did I screw up on my message to 9kitty?
This is just making my day. I'll go outside and do some digging or deadheading. Then maybe I'll be on track.
woodspirit1 - sounds like something I would do - forgetting a dinner. Have done it twice in the last year. Good luck when you see your friends.
Since McCool has served warning that she won't be continuing with what happened in history, you might like to bookmark the site I get most of it from - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_9
That's a daily for today's date, but it is easy to change the date to be current.
The roasted tomato recipe does sound good. All I need is the tomatoes. LOL They will ripen when I'm away, no doubt. I've told people at the Food Cupboard to come and pick. I hope they do. don't want to return to rotten fruit on the ground.
BBL
Ann
Ann, I did not mean you should not D-maol to Babs, please do, as soon as she comes back to the computer she will love to read her email, Babs is one of the nicest and kindest person I know I am still very sorry I did not meet her while in WA
Susan------ I did not know it was your Birthday. I thought you was talking about the first atom bomb on Japan. Soryyyy old girl. If they dropped you on japan those japansse gardens would drive you nuts. I have been there they are really something.
Good Morning. Happy Birthday Susan!
Brent is here working, has already finished painting the ceiling in the tool shed, and applied Messenger to my plants. Since there was almost half a gallon left (and it doesn't keep more than 4 hours) I sent him home with it to use on his garden.
I plan to keep him busy until I leave for my lung doc appt. about noon, and have him mow while I am gone. The grass is so tall he will have to cut it high and cut again in 2 days or else the thatch will kill the grass. Hopefully within 2 weeks this place will look less like white trash live here!
Yes happy birthday Susan.
Well its all settles! The pond goes where I wanted it to go in the first place way back in April. Course that means that the chair and table by the garden shed and tree must find a new home and about 8 or 9 plants but hey they're getting moved today. I wanted to settle on the otherside of the tree but hey Its not next to the house. I wanted something out there where people would walk and not sit on the patio and go no where else. Plant themselves in a chair and stay for the duration. I can claim a victory over the bil .
Morning everyone
Just wanted to say happy birthday to Susan ... and am so sorry to hear about your fibro. You have certainly had your share lately. I do hope it gets better. :-)
Maria, thanks so much for the update on Babs. I was afraid that something was wrong with her Mum. I will be saying extra prayers for her. She is such a sweet person and a loving daughter. I know she is going through a real tough time right now.
Defoe, sure hope your DGD doesn't share that cold with you. There are some things that are just not made to share. LOL Hope you have an easy day of it at the grocery. That new flower bed sure sounds pretty you're fixing. :-)
Woodspirit, so sorry you forgot your special supper last night. Ah, that's a good reason to use for not going, though. Don't you just *hate* it when you get caught out in a rain like that?
Speaking of rain ... we actually managed to get a nice one last night. I didn't think we were going to, but we did. susan, wish I could have sent some your way for a Bday present.
sarv, sure sounds like you have a good time with your sis. So sorry to hear about your DIL. I'm looking around at the mess in my house now. Makes me do some thinking. I try not to be a pack rat, but I know I am.
Well, it's taken me forever to write this, so I'll get up for now. I know I've forgotten some of what I've read, so just chalk it up to CRS this morning and let me get by with a ~~~ for now. Y'all have a good day.
Worked like a dog and am now taking a break!
Cece- congrads on getting your way!! (sticking my tongue out at BIL)
Darius- lucky you that Brent is back working....wonder if he would like to travel up here!! Why don't you let part of your acreage go into wild flowers - then you wouldn't have to mow so much. Good luck at the docs.
wood-just think of the calories you saved!! LOL are you sure you want to tell a white lie? I ALWAYS get caught in my lies, so I most (read that most) often tell the truth. Everyone screws up...and I do often!
Gonna work for another hour - then I am done for the day!!
Thank sarv, now all I have to do is get unlazy. No gumption today to get off my rear and do anything. Laundry needs to be done and vacumning besides moving plants. Here I sit lurking and enjoying everyone elses conversations and getting NOTHING done. I'm a lost cause today.
darius I love hearing about the progress you are making with your new home. So much energy you have and the knowledge you must have to be planning and doing things on your own. My hats off to you.
Wow! Thanks for all the birthday wishes! You guys made me feel better with all of that.
Actually I do feel a little better today, of course I haven't gotten outside much yet. It is already 94 heat index of 98 and heading for 104. Yuck!
I am 59 today, someone asked that. Heading for the big 60 next time. Actually I am very thankful to have this birthday. When I had breast cancer in 1994, I was sure I wouldn't make it to 50. I am thankful for everyday even if it hurts. LOL
The baby wrens are getting really cute, I am amazed at their little feathers. They still look like burnt chicken, but they will get better. I raised a baby sparrow and thought it looked awful for the longest time. I know, I know, should have killed it since it is a nasty sparrow, but to me it still something to take care of.
Just got a call from DS, he is on his way to see me for my birthday. It is still my WalMart day, that's another yuck, but he had to come see his mom. He is very silly about birthdays.
Well, I need to go finish my coffee, ought to have iced tea or something, but still have to have my lattes even in the heat. Maybe that is what is making me hurt??? LOL
Thanks again for all the well wishes.
Oh, and OZ I heard that 'old girl' remark...love you too... :-)
Susan
=^..^=
cece-congratulations on your victory!! Know how I got unlazy today? Had my coffee, read the paper, and went back to sleep until 11!! Try it!! IT works!! OmG and it's a perfect day I'm wasting. too.
Oz you are too funny and I for one am glad they did not drop Susan on Japan.
m5-I did see your eggplants, cute little buggers but they don't hold a candle to Sammi and Olivia.
defoe- I love the fall, but as sarv said above it's sad and happy. It's so beautiful and crisp and energizing, but it's also like a sunset or the last day of vacation....and the winter is so long. I enjoy part of the winter, but when it's gloomy all Feb and March like this year, then rainy in April and May...well, I get pretty down. I do not enjoy cleaning at all. Used to do house projects in Feb. (like redoing rooms) but I think I've outgrown that.
I'm off to have more coffee, bake a lemon blueberry bread with all the blueberries DD picked. Two days ago I made home made granola, and boy was that good. It was a big hit with the kids.
Need some Queen Anne's Lace? I still have some dried heads out in the fields along with a couple of kinds of coneheads. The cones are standard Blackeyed Susan and some really pretty Droop cones. I'll be happy to put them in the mail for you to just scatter around to see what happens (no postage necessary, since there is no promise of germination).
ginni
Happy Birthday 9Kitty...Kitty and Birthday brought back my 40th birthday cake from a friend...now I do have to say this is a nasty looking cake!! It was a great 40th birthday gag (literally) cake. Amazingly good if you can get past the looks:)
Prayers for Babs mother
Hello to everyone else. We had a little rain...nice..hoefully it will be nice for our weekend camping trip. The coast was beautiful!
Ginnie...I would love some of your seeds! Is there anything you are looking for?
and some coneheads.....they are for the blackeyed susans? I love those
I'm pretty good at all kinds of treasure hunting if anyone needs anything
LOL Somermoone!! My now DIL made a cake like that for me before she married my DS....pretty brave of her, don't you think. Actually, the concept is very funny, but unfortunately she can't bake worth a hoot, so the cake wasn't all that good. Even out of a box, she can mess it up. It was funny though.
I see Oz is setting himself up again with his "old girl" remarks. I think we should send the two by four to his long suffering wife. I'm sure she will have plenty of occasions to use it.
Darius, if you want more Queen Anne's Lace, I'm pulling some up very soon, as it's growing in the middle of a patch of artemesia, which I am also going to pull up, so if you want it, I'll wait until it goes to seed and send you some. (Any excuse to postpone manual labor works for me...) Your piece of property is really a diamond in the rough. Lots of nice features and possibilities.
WS, when telling a big fib, it's best to not say too much, keep it short and simple! The more you embellish, the less believable you sound! I say this as if it has worked for me, but I tell ya, I need to stick to the truth!! I've missed more appointments than I have fingers this year. Only once it was the vet's office's fault, so I'm off the hook for one. LOL Now they almost all call the day before to remind me.
Now I am going to get off my rear and vacuum because it looks like a dust bin in here. Then I'm going to treat myself to a manicure and who knows what else. I'm in a mood to be nice to me. LOL
Congrats Cherie on your triumph over the BIL. Too bad the well was filled in. Many people in New Berlin who got city water kept their wells even though they weren't supposed to, water bills for us when we lived there were about $100 a month. And it was very bad tasting water!!! None of the counties west of a specific geographic line can get Lake Michigan water and it is becoming more of a problem for the western counties. Big talks going on about sharing Great Lakes Water....something we all have taken for granted has the potential of being shipped to western states. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.
Off to use the vac. Gee, the fun never stops.
Sheila

Well I'm ready to try again.
HURRAH FOR CHERIE!!!! That was a good win.Sounds like a lot of us aren't moving to fast. Don't we deserve it after all we did during the HOT SPELL! M5 doing something for yourself sounds great. Yesterday after my Dental cleaning I went and got my hair cut. I'm thinking about a perm still. Were those long foam curlers they used on yours? I asked the beautician and she said that's what she would use. Perm prices Started at $58. I have to do lots of thinking. Perm or flowers???
darius your place is so nice. Yes it needs work but will be so great when it's done. Having a creek is fun. I've always wanted something like that. But I'm happy with what I have. Who knows what will happen when DH starts working in the low spot with the dozer. He even talked of a pond..
Went out and checked some of the other corn. I planted 4 different kinds in small plots.
The pearls and gold is almost done. Wasn't a bad corn. Next one is Kandy KIng that seem fairly sweet. Then there is Quickie that one does not seem sweet. I noticed smut on some of those I have to remove. Today I have corn to get in the freezer. The fourth corn was Baby Corn. That was fun and got enough to add to several meals.
Now if the tomatoes would ripen. I plan on canning Pizza Sauce. I'm not paying $1 a jar. Have to find a recipe for that. Also plan on canning tomatoes. Not as much as defoe though.
This year I'm trying Giant Valentine. It's larger than roma. I'm also trying a small cherry called Red Currant. Not as sweet as some but still good.
Has anyone seen the new Peony called "Green Lotus"? I so want that. I've been getting the fall catalogs and I so want to shop. Help I have to wait. Someone tell me no!!!!!!!!
I know there was more I had typed earlier but crs has set in for me also. Maybe I'll remember later.
I love trying new seeds. That makes gardening fun!
Plug your nose- I stink!!! Been cleaning so hard my deodorant went south.... but man, did I accompolish a lot!! I'm so proud of myself. Now I can rest for the next month or so...LOL
Darius- your place looks so peaceful. I didn't realize you had neighbors so close tho. How many acres do you mow (I know you've probably told us, but CRS)
M5- I looked at my nails and whooee, could they use a manicure. I cleaned with gloves on, but all the polish is chipped off and they look mighty sad. Maybe I will redo them tonight in front of the tv. I am trying to think of things that will get DH out of his lazy boy. He comes home from work and watches the stock market for 2 hr. Makes dinner and then sits again until midnight. I know he is tired and it has been hotter than blazes here, but he does need to move a little!! He is on his feet all day and he tells me he is no spring chicken...(as if I need reminding about that...)
Well, I need to get to the compost pile with a bunch of frozen corn from the freezer. DH froze a ton that was way too ripe- yuck. I am slowly pitching it - about 20 more pks to go and then I start on the broccoli. I just cannot eat the stuff....(it was from last summer - so time to go)
DM just called and she found a tall cherry tv stand that she wants at an estate sale. After 4 the prices go down. The only problem is that DH has to get it for her and I know he won't be a happy camper.. I may just call DS and ask him to help - he is getting their old tv cabinet- and it is a nice one....
Well, gotta get moving..
Hi all. No I'm not unlazy yet. I can't seem to get started on anything. I did manage to put a bulb order in the mailbox before postman came. Ordered 70 more bulbs to add to the 101 I've already on order. No idea where any of its going. Play it by ear when they start coming in, I guess.
Exsil called me this morning to tell me her DH has been diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma and begins chemo today. He just turned 45 in June. Of my ex husbands family he is the only one I have stayed in contact with over the past 13 years. He's the only decent and caring one of the bunch and I am just sick that this is happening to him. Cancer of the lymph nodes is so tricky because there are lymphs throughout your whole body. A cell can travel the lymph system and cancer can take up housekeeping any where thoughout the body it wants too. I'm just sick.
Darius your pics are beautiful keep them coming.
CRS ~~~~~~~~~to all
Cherie
Good morning. It's still morning here although it's disappearing fast.
Maria, thanks for letting us know about Babs. I have missed her and was thinking that her absense was probably because of her mother's health. She is still taking care of her, although has needed some help now to do it, so she shouldn't feel guilty. And the same for you Maria, I know you just reached the point with your DH that you weren't able to do it anymore, and you also needed help for his care, so you should not feel like you didn't take care of him. A long illness wears a person down terribly, we all understand that.
I see a new face here, welcome, come back and let us get acquainted. You came in yesterday's thread and I have already lost the name, but I do remember it started with C. Oh, wow, 1 out of 26 possibilities, I'm sooooo good!
9kitty, Happy Birthday. I hope all your walking helps you feel better and helps those extra pounds go away. Sorry that you're hurting all the time. Hopefully with a better diet you will feel better, I've heard that works for fibro.
I had an uncle whose house was stacked to the ceelings with old magazines, newspapers, clothes and things. He was a bachelor all his life and lived all of his adult life in the same house. I think he was in his middle 80's when he died. When I was little he would come to my grandparents where I lived, and have dinner every Saturday night. Grandma always cooked roast beef on Saturday because he was coming. He drove an old model T or A Ford, it was old then but he didn't care, it was the only car he ever owned.
Yesterday while I was doing some last minute watering before going for a ride on Patch I noticed Breezy standing on 3 feet and trying to keep weight off the other one. He had put his front foot through the barbed wire fence and then backed up, got a wire cut between the hoof and the first joint (fetlock) and so my plans changed a bit. I cleaned it up with water from the hose, then used betadine and finally some Schriener's Herbal Remedy, didn't have what I needed to bandage it so I left it unwrapped and put him in the corral where he couldn't get into any mud (near the spring overflow). Then I took a shorter ride on Patch and went to town, got all the stuff I needed, did my regular shopping and got caught in a heavy downpour that only lasted a few minutes but it did get me wet. Official total precip was .05 inch. We probably didn't get that much out here on the dry side of the valley. After I got home I cleaned up Breezy's owie again, and it looked pretty good so I decided to keep on with the same treatment twice a day and see how it goes. This morning it looks pretty good, not much swelling, no sign of infection, and he is using it a bit more.
Off to ride Patch before it gets too hot. Then I need to water the vegie garden. Back later.
