Jennifer, I just posted a followup on another thread, but wanted to say it here too - you've been a good sport throughout this little tempest in a teapot. Kudos to you, and take comfort in knowing that getting through college can be agonizing and debt-ridden, it is (usually) some of the best-spent money you'll ever part with. Hang in there!!!!!

I'm confused.
How do parents go about claiming a dependants income on their taxes? Is it essentially "tax free" if the dependant is in school? i really dont know the answer to that.
Furthermore, if the dependants income is claimed, and taxes are assesed BASED on that income, then wouldnt the refund check the parents receive also include the DEPENDANTS portion of the tax relief?
I could complain that my taxable income was higher than alot of people, and therefore i should be entitled to a higher refund, but i'm not.
I dont think the issue here is the president. I think the issue is wanting something that was not intended for dependants. Maybe i would have a more compassionate ear if taxes were filed in a "single" status and not as a dependant.
Mz, you still got the can of worms handy? I may need to eat some after this, lol.

I am not sure how it works for your students there, but here things can be quite hard, students can apply for a student grant from the govement, this will pay for there first year at uni, most are fortunate to get residence for the first year and live on campus, but after that they have to find thier own place to live and a job to pay for there accomidation and food etc, so more loans are needed mostly, an average student these days can leave uni after four years with a dept of around £10.000 plus, and with the system being different over there i can well see the need for any and all refunds to all college students, they really do need it, my son is 18, he starts uni in september, and has already found out how much he will need for the first year, and with things like bills on the up, he will be owing the govenment and banks a lot more before the end of his uni education.

Some people don't get to go, to college.

Nope talon5 me neither, and i dont regret it for a minute.

I didn't go to college, either. I went straight into the world-of-work. Never regretted my decision - it worked for me.

Surry, VA(Zone 7b)

AngelSong, I have to disagree when you said "Not getting my portion leaves me disgusted (along with all college students, I'm sure)... My niece is getting a refund because she made a choice to move out and work while attending college full time. She also received a couple of scholarships. Her parents wanted her to pay $35/week for room/board at home, (which I didn't think fair, although reasonable), but she wanted her freedom and realized that 3 girls can get a decent place for a little bit more. It's been tough for her too, but just like you she also has educational goals she wants to achieve.

You go Sansman!

Actually I think ALL politics and ALL religious references should be left OUT OF the GRADEN.

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

*giggle*
That's okay, disagree. I couldn't much care. I only used this forum as a method of reducing some stress. I've done everything possible to get my point across without being political.

And, once again, (HMPH), for my bachelor's degree, I chose to live at home to save money. However, I chose an excellent, private, Christian institution rather than a state, federally funded school full of distraction. There are no Christian colleges or universities with a Master's of Science in Chemistry (to the best of my knowledgde), or I'd be there, regardless of cost.

Cheers, everyone! Have a blast arguing over this one. I merely wanted to point out that _not_ everyone is getting the refund to those that were happily receiving theirs. I strongly dislike the idea of everyone thinking "wow, isn't that nice of them to give us back a little...", when "us" isn't everyone.

I'm going to go back to nursing the 24 hour flu I seem to have caught, and restrain myself to only read further posts in this thread, and not respond to them. This has become a much larger issue, a larger one that I intended.

AngelSong...Maybe it's better walking out the door of this thread after such comments. If I understood correctly, you insinuated state universities/community colleges were full of distractions. I have another niece that graduated from a Christian College in Tennessee, and must have had some distractions since we saw her diploma as well as her husband. He is now a youth minister and they have three children.
My other niece, the one I spoke about previously, attended a community college for two years and is going to MIT this fall. She has worked her butt off since she was 16, and has no student loans to pay off - in fact she already is pretty well set until her senior year because she invested her money wisely.

Got to get my 2 cents in! I can't believe that some of you are STILL complaining about the election! The votes were counted, Bush won! They were re-counted, Bush won again! They were counted again, he still won! The Miami Herald counted them again, Bush still won!!!! Get_over_it, Bush won and he's our president! Gheeeeeeesh!

As for the tax refund, those of you that are complaining so much, it seems fairly simple to me, send it back! I think I'll keep mine. :o)

Right on Root! Rush Limbaugh was right when he said, "the only difference between a liberal and a communist is that the communists know what they're doing!"

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Batten down the hatches, ya'll.....this could be a bumpy ride ;0)

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

go_vols; Naw, just good clean fun! :o)

Bah!! Hysterical Red.

Say, I heard a funny quote today. It turns out that the New York Times has recently released their official findings of their 6 month long re-count in Florida. The verdict: Bush still wins (big shocker there, huh?).

Anyway, the quote said: "Bush has won so many times in Florida, he's no longer eligible for re-election".

hehehehhe

Hey Karma - I'd vote for you (I recall you lived in Nebr) - did you live here when two women were running for Governor (yes in good old conservative Nebraska!) My dh and dd just roll their eyes when I get on one of my "tangeants" and start calling politicians to start my nagging sessions.

Oh yeah - my dd is attending the state university (just received the first bill for the fall semester today to prove it). I don't think she's too corrupted, yet!

My comment, concerning those who didn't get to go to college, was meant for those who didn't have a choice, not for those who chose not to.
As for the political debate....sansman, you'll be very welcome in New England, where Presidents are born, who can actually speak English.

Thanks talon, karma, weebus...I guess I'm not the only liberal (uugghh!!), state university bred (eeekkks!), intellectual (aaayyyy!) person on this conservative forum.

The more I read this thread, the more thankful I become.

You know, I started to take exception to the implication that one can't be both intellectual and conservative.

Then I remembered that intellectualism and wisdom different distinct meanings. So who knows, maybe one can't be intellectual and conservative. At any rate, I'm now sure no offense was meant, and none taken ;0)

North Wales, PA(Zone 6a)

Vol: No offense intended. In fact, if you read the post, no where does it say one cannot be intellectual and conservative. It says I am not the only liberal...intellectual on this conservative forum. Guess you're right about intellectualism. :)

Don't misunderstand, I even associate with several conservative intellectuals. It's just that they don't insult people (e.g., calling liberals whiners, communists, victims, incompetent, sinners), they discuss ideas.

Please understand I'm chuckling as I write this, but that sure did sound like a "Some of my best friends are [fill in the blank]" statement. Of course, this time it would be filled in with "intellectual conservatives".] Too funny!

If you'll read my posts, I don't think I called anyone names - I know I surely didn't mean to. Admittedly, there have been some generalizations made across party lines, and some specific attacks against our president. Let's see, brainless, attempting to bribe us with tax refunds, and unable to string together a cogent thought, to name a few. There are probably many more jibes that were just too danged subtle for me. And yes, I am still chuckling, because life's too short to take much seriously. Have a great evening!

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

you know gv, the more you write, the more I like you. Nothing to do with politics, at all! You have style.

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

Go_Vols;

Well said. I too, had to chuckle, I thought this person was very nice to "even associate with" [fill in the blanks]. :o) LOL (of course, that's just my opinion)

You do have style and class Gal! Probably comes from wisdom!

Crystal Lake, IL

Although I would rather have bamboo splinters inserted under my fingernails than enter a political discussion with strangers, one thing I will not do is stand by and let people insult my friend Sansman.

You folks are making far too much hay over that word "even" in his sentence. I know him to be intelligent, open-minded and fair.

All the "chuckling" in the world is no disguise for mean-spiritedness.

Bethelridge, KY(Zone 6a)

Didn't mean to insult anyone, if I did I apoligize. I disagree with his politics whole-heartedly, but I have no wish to offend anyone. If I did, I'm truly sorry.

Having said this, I'm gone!

The more I read this thread, the more I think politics should be left out of the garden because a lot of these comments really sadden me and make me disappointed in some members whom I've really grown to like. I think we are nicer people when we are just gardeners.

Spring Hill, FL(Zone 9a)

Everyone complains about the actions of our duly elected officials but only the people of Minnesota ever did anything about it. Neither of the two major political parties are ever going to change the crooked system that they have out in place for themselves.
