Remember this? How many still use one?
I take it out occasionally. I love the quiet whirring sound of the blades. Unfortunately, it cuts the grass too short. In this climate the grass looks better cut long and survives the lack of water better too.
I find if I use this guy, I better rake first. If I hit a sweet gum ball or pinecone, it locks up and I am hit in the solarplexus with the handle. Ompff... : 0
Vegetative Manipulation
I've wanted one of those, maybe a newer model LOL. Right now I have an electric, but the cord drives me crazy. Does it work on SA? The grass has such a thick blade, I didn't think it would make a good cut.
My SO and I have this one and *love* it!

We have a relatively small corner lot in town, so it works out perfect for us. We can mow as early or as late as we choose, and listen to music or talk on the phone at the same time if we want because it's so quiet. I hate mixing gas too, so love this option. :)
Fly, I don't have experience with sa grass. I have centipede in back and a golf course blend in the front. If it has sa in it I don't know it... It was a Utah golf course blend that was given to me by a friends father and I love it. Wish I had more. I do think the newer models are more effortless. Do you have a large area to mow? Beware of pinecones / sweet gum balls / little branches which will bring it to a halt.
Ignote, would you believe we bought this at a Mpls garage sale for $2. If in town, it won't disturb the neighbors that sleep in. It is more excercise, which I need. And there is some nostalgia when using it.
podster, I got a gas mower because HE said a reel mower is a lot harder to push. What's your take on this? He probably used one as a kid, and it was 30 years old and rusty, but I don't know. I'd rather use the push mower, but not if it's going to kill my back worse than the gas mower is doing.
The new ones are much easier to push. Our brill's blades don't even touch, so we won't have to sharpen it for 7 years or more! Of course, if you let your lawn go, it is more work to cut it. Or if you try cutting super short, it'll make it more of a chore too.
Hi Brigidlily ~ Yup, it is harder to push. I think maybe the new ones would run more smoothly. I do know this one runs more freely when the blades are sharp.
I have an aversion to the noise and my back protests on the starting of my gas mower. I do use the gas mower most of the time tho. I mow the grass taller if that makes sense. It is less stressed, requiring less water. The reel type mower could probably be adjusted up but it cuts closer than I want. When I bought a new gas mower, I chose the smallest one, I wanted lightweight and easy to manuever. The MOTH wanted supercharged, self propelled, mag wheels ; ). This time, I won. I do the mowing.
