Call for Artists - Caution Wet Paint - Painting Forum?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

A call for Artists and Art lovers alike.

Since becoming a member here at Dave's Garden I have enjoyed the many benefits and learned more in this one place than I have in many other sites combined. I have also enjoyed the ability to use the discussion forums to clarify, share, ID, laugh about, give/receive advice, etc. about all sorts of information about plants & gardening and other related topics.

I'd like to propose adding a new forum for a topic that I've noticed there are many gardeners involved in, but there's not currently a forum for this specific subject.

I realize there is a "Crafts" section, but not a "Painting" subsection here at this time. I would like to hear from other artists and art lovers to see if there is enough interest to warrant DG Staff to consider adding a new forum for art/painting.

I feel it would be a good place to share art photos, techniques, experiences, gallery and show events and information, etc. with other artist and art lovers - without being "out of topic" on other threads or forums.

I'm and artist and paint mostly wildlife and nature themed paintings. I've received a couple of nice flower images from another member that I'm planning to paint soon and will likely do more of this type art in the near future.

Since I've been using the forums I've noticed there are several other gardeners that are also artists. Some have mentioned that it would be nice if there was a Painting forum on here.

Here's your chance to speak up.
Thanks,
GD

we need a painting thread!!! way to go!!!

I’ve noticed in the Garden Art Forum there are quite a few talents posting there too.
GD, please keep showing the cheetah painting as it develops. Hopefully when things slow for me at work, I’ll spend some figuring out how to post a picture. I may paint an entire gopher series ;)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Halleluyah! A nice way to share different ideas about wildlife paintings, floral paintings, etc. Count me in.... :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks for the comments . . . don't forget to spread the word. :)

For a sample of some of what may take place on the new *Painting Forum* . . . Here's the link to "Painting Jamar" . . . if anyone wants to follow the progress of painting of this Cheetah cub.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks, GD for getting this started. I'll be checking in often and hopefully post some pics soon.

Headland, AL(Zone 8a)

I vote for a painting forum. I'd love to be able to chit chat with other artists and get pointers on how to improve my work....or learn about new techniques and/or products.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I don't consider myself an artist, but recently posted a couple of watercolors of roses that I had done (as a student) at the request of a fellow DG'er. I'm sure there are many talented painters here, though. I, for one, would love to see their work and hear some discussions. I vote yes! You don't have to be artist to be interested.

edited to add:

here's a link to the thread with my rose watercolors (near the end)..also some gorgeous roses, if anyone is interested...remember STUDENT ;-)

What about calling it the "Artist" or "Art and Artists" forum? That would open the door to more than just painters, but still denote something more specific than "Crafts and Decorating". Or would a "Fine Arts and Artists" forum title make more sense?

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Yea I have to agree. Like my rino that I painted. It really isn't a craft but it wasn't a painting either, even if I did do it in oils

Mystic, CT(Zone 6b)

We should have one, whatever it is called.

So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)

You will need to differentiate between artistic painters and house painters. Not that some house painters aren't artistis, esp. the ones that do faux painting.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

I would LOVE to have a forum for painters and other artists! I often do feel like I'm ambushing a thread or forum when I post my oil painting images. It would be great to have a dedicated space where we can share our paintings, sculptures, prints, and other works with glee and abandon! I like the suggestion above for the "Fine Arts and Artists Forum" as a name for the forum.

Many of you may have already seen the image below as I have posted it a few times elsewhere, but it is my oil painting, "The Healer's Leaves," 4 x 6 ft, using a photo from GardenWife on DG from whom I gained permission for use of her photo. The painting sold at a fundraiser event back in March for $1500 (all proceeds to the cause). You may recognize the plant in the painting as Castor Oil Plant (Ricinus communis). You can see GardenWife's original photo at the Plant Files page for Castor Oil Plant.

I agree that it would be wiser to be named Fine Arts and Artists. I'm an artist, majored in Fine art photography, and do have a darkroom, but oddly enough spend alot of time painting...oh yeah, then there's the half finished bronze sculpture in the garage, several terracotta sculptures and rock sculptures, and textile experiments....

The list goes on and on, lol. I think alot of people forget that the arts encompass many things and by making just a painting forum we might alienate those who prefer other things, such as pottery, sculpture, printmaking, etc. Besides it would be nice to have a place to swap ideas, gallery openings, etc.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Jeremy. That is very nice... very well done.

jax...very gorgeous

I'm all for it.

I do Sumi-e, and Oriental brush painting.

Hap

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

I did that once. still have all the brushes.. never used them again.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

I would encourage the idea of fine arts, as jessmerritt said, so not to exclude other mediums.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Jeremy: Great job!
Grampapa: Nice rose painting!
GD: Fabulous as always!

I'd LOVE to have a painting forum on Dave's as all these great pictures of art seem to be spread out all over. I want to see ALL of them in one place!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

I totally agree that it should not be limited to just painting. The title Caution Wet Paint was intended more as an attention getter than anything else. The rest of it (calling all artist) was more the point I should have emphasized.

I too enjoy many mediums and agree that sometimes that gets overlooked when people talk about or thing about "the arts". Hence; another good reason to have such a forum ;) Thanks for bring that up . . . point well made and taken.

Also thanks for taking the time to respond to this thread. As I mentioned, I've noticed that there are many artists of many flavors here on DG and even more art lovers. From beginners to more experienced and many points in-between. Some may be more active than others and some may just need a little inspiration to get them back in "creative mode".

I think there are many good reasons to have such a forum and I feel that even if it was slow in the beginning it would surely gain momentum and be fairly popular.

By the way . . . nice work folks and thanks for sharing the images of your art. That's a nice start to where this forum could lead.

Wheatfield, NY(Zone 6a)

thanks for the comments on my watercolors

lol...ya see...? They're comin' in already... :) BTW, beautiful work, Jeremy.. :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Very nice . . . it's great to see other artist work on here. Thanks for share'n!!!

I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that we're just starting to scratch the surface. When the word spreads to more members about this idea, I'm thinking that we'll see a LOT more artists (of many mediums) showing us their beautiful work and sharing ideas and tips and wonderful stories - like the fund raisers and such.

Since I'm still fairly new to DG (less than 2 months) I don't know a lot of the other members yet, but I'll drop a little note to the ones I've gotten to know and let them know of this idea. Even though they may not be artist, many enjoy viewing the work of artist - much like strolling through a gallery. Only here, they'll get to hear directly from the artist. I think that's a bonus that will generate even more interest. Maybe some of you other folks that have been here longer could add a line (about this thread) when you D-Mail your friends just to let them know we're wanting to see how much interest is out there for such a forum.

Thanks for chime'n in,
GD

A "Fine Arts and Artists Forum" would be a great asset to Dave's Garden. I can see all types of mediums being presented there. The Craft section is definately not the place to post art like GD has done. I can see artists, as well as sculptors, sketch artist, etc. being able to interact with others. Great idea!
Your Cheeta is looking great btw!

Tulsa, OK(Zone 7a)

It would be nice to go enjoy all art forms see everyones talents. art is to be enjoyed by all.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

There are so many talented artists on DG. I would vote for an Artists Forum, whatever you called it!

Nichols, IA(Zone 5a)

I think it's a good idea!

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

I love to look at artwork, professional or amateur, experienced or novice, good or grand! I love the Photo Forum, and would love an Artwork Forum just as much! Excellent suggestion, GD, and I'm with you all the way!

I would hope, though, that the inexperienced novice would not feel intimidated by the beautiful things such as I've seen right here on this thread. I'd seriously like to see all degrees of talent feel comfortable enough to post.

And Gram! You can paint! I'm very impressed!

That's my two cents. Right now I'm going to zip over to GD's thread to see how the cheetah is doing today.

SF Bay Area, CA(Zone 9b)

Love it! I'm not an artist, but I thoroughly enjoy looking at all different kinds of media. I'd spend a LOT of time lurking in a forum like this!

Renatelynne, I WANT your Rhino vase!! It's awesome!
Jeremy, your Castor Oil Plant painting is fantabulous!

And thank you to everyone else who have already shown what talented people we have here at DG!

Pasadena, CA(Zone 9b)

I agree with what ever GD_Rankin says.......:-))))

Great idea! There are so many talented artists in this community! (I'm not really one of them, but I like to look!)

I had suggested this forum last year, but got no response... hope it goes further this time around- have lots of my art posted on my journal... but here's something a bit different. was a quickie oil I did of my instructor in illustration, since he was always painting finger puppets.
