August buds n' blooms

Macon, IL(Zone 5b)

H. lacunosa opened for me today - the fragrance is heavenly! I'd love a lotion made from it! Thank you, Ann Wayman, for this cutting! Karen

Karen, perfect bloom to start the month. Oh wouldn't a lotion be great !!!

You beat me to it Karen!! Congrats on your new flower, its one of my faves.

I did my rounds this morning and what did I find nestled under a leaf, but buds on my H.Lobbii!! DH figured out what the squealing was and patiently listened to me me carry on about it. Gosh, its exciting when a hoya has its first flowers! Here's the buds.

Compacta's flowers started opening today.

And Javanica/Multiflora is shooting off its stars again, with lacunosa buds blurrily (is that a word?) in the background.

August is starting out happy!

My camera is out of commission again, but will have it fixed by tomorrow (I hope).
Anyway, I have a lovely cumingiana flower that just opened today. It seems like it smells much better this year than last. I wonder if the weather or age or something affects the smell of them? Last year it smelled like "Pinesol" cleaning liquid. This year it smells like cloves mixed with fruit punch. Sure wish we had "smell-o-puter." Ha Ha
I also have a little bud on that strange carnosa that has the "whitewashed" look to it. The one September Song sells as carnosa silver variegated. I think it is actually something called argentine picta (or something like that). Anyway, it has never bloomed for me before but now has these buds, so Im keeping my fingers crossed for that one.
I have several second bloomings of the various pubicalyx and carnosas out front going on now, and my lacunosa, multiflora, obovatas, and regular compacta have been blooming steady all summer.

Oh, hooray, everyone!!! Congrats on the gorgeous flowers!!
I am especially intrigued by that compact bloom - how do you grow it Christine?
Ann

Thanks Ann. The plant is 12-13 years old, is in a 8" clay pot, and sits on top of a 5' tall plant stand. The stand is 3' back from a sliding glass door that faces south-east. Some of the plant gets a little bit of direct sun first thing in the morning (if the blinds are open early enough!). It's a very bright location. Likes lots of water from spring to fall, and much less over the winter. It's a happy bloomer this year.

Great pics you two. That compacta bloom is gorgeous Christine.
I must get one of those lobbiis. Everyones is blooming it seems.

OK...camera fixed. Here is the cumingiana bloom. The scent is very strong this year. I can smell this one bloom when I get anywhere near the plant.

I don't know if it shows up good enough but here is the little bud on that carnosa silver variegated (argentine picta) plant. I actually found another small one forming tiny little buds too.

Here is the little one. Bad pic. I am camera-challenged as well as computer-challenged. Ha Ha.

Marcy, I have just one word to say to you: Jealousy (LOL). Wow, gorgeous blooms. What conditions do you have the siariae in to get it to bloom?
Ann

Prescott, AZ

Really beautiful flowers ladies. H. siariae has a really pretty bloom, I was able to see a real close up photo of this one last night. Your gonna love it..

Long Beach, CA

I've only had that siariae for a few weeks (got it in that last order from Carol). So I think it was due to flower from her care not mine. I haven't really done anything except water it and spray Eleanors on it with all the rest. It is sitting amongst other small plants on the side of the house in a bright but shady spot.
Marcy

Congrats Marcy, on your lots and lots of very lovely blooms!

Good growing! I love all the bloom photos but was extra happy to see the krimson queen. It's so exciting to see your blooms, but for some reason my reflection in the mirror has a green tinge......................hmmmmmmmm................ -joanne

I don't have any pics yet....but I have buds on my pubicalyx SP, a noid that I am excited to see finally bloom, and my first buds on both obovata and kerrii. And.....I have 3 seed pods on my obscura! Finally my hoyas came to life this summer! I'll try to get some pics this weekend.

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Oh, wow Kim! Yes, please show us pictures. I especially would like to see a photo of the seedpods on your obscura!

Oh I wish I could trees for my trellisis. your so lucky Carol.

Congrats on your blooms Kim, and I would love to see your pods too.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Kim...what else was blooming when the H. obscura was blooming? Could you save me a pod?....Big and FAT and Green is OK...by the time it gets here it should be ripe and I could grow them out....and share them with everyone!!!! Pllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllleeeese?

Carol

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Ok....so I took a pic last night but didn't have time yet to get it off my camera. I'm keeping a close eye on these pods, so far they are about 2.5'' long. Carol.....at the time other than a lot of other obscura blooms on that plant ( I think it has at least 8 peduncles), I believe fungii was also blooming and lacunosa as well. I'm not sure what pollinated it since it is hanging from my porch....ants can't really get to it. However, I did see a hummingbird feeding on my fungii...hmm....can they pollinate hoyas? Anyway.....I'll be sure to save you one. They're still pretty slender right now. So exciting!

:) Kim

Long Beach, CA

Wow...I've never gotting any pods from hoyas. That must be neat. I will have to keep a closer eye on all the ones outside as lots of bees, wasps, butterflys, and hummingbirds do visit them.
How does one mail a seed pod anyway? Do you have to tape them shut so they don't go bursting open in transit or what?

Here are some contributions from me... First out is sweet little cv. Sunrise, a bit paler than usual since it's on the shady side of the plant.

Next is hypolasia about to burst any day now. It'll be the third time this summer!

And siariae seems to follow hypolasia every time. She's also ready to burst any day!

My dimorpha is finally getting ready to bloom... I accidently broke off the first peduncle.

And finally my chlorantha var. tutuilensis is blooming again. The sun is shining on the back of some of the flowers in case you think it looks strange...

Christina, those look beautiful! I love, love, love the chlorantha var. tutuilensis! It is really interesting how you can see veins, etc. on the blooms when there is light shining in through the back of the blooms. I can't wait to see the rest of these plants once they open.
