Mushrooms on grass

Southern, CA(Zone 8b)

Mushrooms on grass, what causes this? Is this a sign of too much watering?

Thanks, Mary

Woaaa... flashback... shrooms AND grass...

But seriously, folks... conditions just get right and fungi take off. The spores are always there, and when just the right temp and just the right amount of air and water and nutrients are there... you get to deal with a fairy ring! If it's a big problem, you might try cutting back on the water.

Brigidlilly....you are too funny.

I have yellow ones growing in my potted plants on the front porch (all the rain last week). I thought it very strange with the yellow color.

knolan, I have those, too! Can't identify them, but the extension agent says just pull them up and don't worry about it. They've invaded my oregano, and just yesterday I found them in a pot of spearmint. They'll be in the compost pile very soon.

We had one of the largest mushrooms in our lawn I've ever seen. I guess the temps, water, and humidity were just right for it to pop up. This thing was 9 inches across. And the stem was large to. Had to be to hold up one that big. lol My dogs didn't know what to think. lol They kept looking at it and waiting for it to move or something. I finally took it out so my pup wouldn't try to eat it.

I have been noticing fairy rings all over town today. The yellow ones pop up in my potted plants frequently. I think they use a mushroom compost in some potting soils and maybe this causes the spores.
Brigidlily ~ "Woaaa... flashback... shrooms AND grass..." You and those of us who laugh are showing our collective ages. Too cute!

We had rain for the first time in weeks and within a few hours the lawn was covered with cute little mushrooms. They had been luring there just waiting for water.

Hi everyone! I am Dayna and I am new. I just thought I would add my two cents regarding lawn mushrooms. I have heard that it is due to too much water and not enough sun/heat. I have also heard that if you give your lawn a lite shampoo with a little bit of dishsoap(not antibacterial) it could wash away the fungus. I have tried it and it did work, for about a season. But this is something I need to do again, not to mention cutting back on the watering. (smile)

In our area, not enough water and too much sun is the order of the day. Actually when they surface here is after a long dry spell and then a good soaker. I rather like them....

Hi Dayna! Welcome to Dave's Garden. We recently had some really large mushrooms on the lawn. I guess the weather was just right for the spores.
