Planting suggestions for a blue bidet please....

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

All right! This is it. This blue bidet needs some suggestions for plants. It is startling enough on its' own, so please put some thought into your suggestions. I think I would like some blooms, what color do you think would work well? Also would like some generous spillers to trail down the sides. I am unsure if I want to go with erect plants too. I can place it anywhere in the yard. (Except the front porch or front yard.) Guess I'll be a water "closet" gardener. Your suggestions will be appreciated. Any thoughts?

P.S. Disregard the fake flowers, they are out of here!

I couldn't believe after it sat outdoors for over 5 years, lately with no rain and many 100 plus degree days, this plant was still alive, growing and blooming. Found it when I uprooted the fake flowers. By the way, this plant isn't staying in the bidet either.... maybe...

How about some of the creeping sedums that just elongated when draping down? Would salvia or veronica do well in your climate?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Salvia yes, I have no experience with veronica. Will have to check that one out. I like the sedums but I suspect they would need shelter when we do freeze. You are in a cold climate, do you bring yours in? What colors are you thinking?

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

or lobelia!

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Howz about a big ol fern? That would cover it up. That is hilarious....you should put it out front where everyone can see it.

Or how about makin it a little water garden/bog.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Yeah, put in a ceramic frog with his little butt hanging over the edge -- maybe a sign saying "wait your turn..." ;]

Pennyroyal draping over the sides, and irises "splashing" up?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

lol.... frog......wait your turn.......it should have plants that are appropriate for a bidet, such as, pot marigolds.

Hi, for the hardy sedums that I leave in the planter..just leave them outside.
They green back up in the spring. The ones out there now are hanging about 14" down.
Love the ideas.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Great ideas Guys! I actually did consider a little water garden but have no experience with those plants. I do like the fern but don't think I could get away with it in the front yard ( even tho I live in the woods ). The lobelia is pretty and "pot" marigold would probably go well. I will have to resist too violent color clashes or it will keep the household up at night! Keep the suggestions coming please, it gives me something to think about. I always heard you do your best thinking when.... ahem.

Pod, I have sedum that I leave in the ground all yr. long. It comes back strong every spring.

Trailing Verbena might be a thought.

You know, I am getting alot of suggestions that I don't know a lot about. I am making a list and hope to sit down this weekend to do research on the varieties of plants. Hope to see what will do well here... Then, I will have to try to locate the plants. There is not a wide selection in our area. That makes me keep going back to the idea of changing it with the seasons. I am also color nervous too. This is such a "glow in the dark" blue. I am not really looking to charm but don't want to repel either...

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

pod, you're planting in a bidet. You might re-think your position if you don't want to repel... ;)

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Pod, where will you sit while you research? LOL

Perhaps a stinky stapelia would be an appropriate plant?

Here's my creation from the other day.......

Brigidlily, I was actually hoping for stunning ; ))

Hey Knolan, I actually have thought about succulents like stapelia, haworthia and dyckia maybe with sedum trailers. The more I hear, the less sure I am about what I want... Either way, a bidet doesn't make a good seat! : ))

A roundabout was built in our neighborhood a few years ago -- the first roundabout in our small town. But they didn't landscape it or put a fountain in it or anything. One day, I came home for lunch and saw a toilet, about the color of your bidet, filled with large bouquets of artificial flowers in the middle of the roundabout. It was quite charming, but I guess not everyone agreed because it was gone by the time I finished lunch and went back to work. Better put a chain on it!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I DIDN"T put it there! Maybe someone else lusted after it enough to steal it... I like the roundabouts and see they are becoming more common. They are definitely efficient. We have a traffic circle and the confusion from outsiders is large...

Okie Doke ~ These are the suggestions compiled so far:

Styles: foilage, herbs, water garden, desert, fountain

Plants suggested for foilage: Ferns, Yellow Varigation (ie. Carex), Arum Italicum, Black Mondo grass

Plants suggested for trailers: Creeping Sedum, Pennyroyal, Trailing Verbena, "Silver Falls" : ))Dichondra, Lysmachia - Golden Creeping Jenny, Begonia Boliviensis

Plants suggested for Color: (here, please mentally insert the bidet color to visualize)
Veronica, Salvia, Lobelia, Iris, Pot Marigolds, Verbena, White PEEtunias : )), Million Bells,
light orange Begonia Boliviensis (also a trailer), tall Saphire Blue Iris, also suggested was the purple plant that is currently in the 'pot', another one I have that I thought about including was a yellow walking iris, Neomarica longifolia (see photo) which would give heighth and drape over the sides.

Decorations suggested: ceramic frog 'seated' on edge of pot, spitting frog, P'ing little boy statue.

I am researching the plants for success in this zone and am still open to any suggestions. Your thoughts are welcome, your humor is appreciated. Obviously anyone who would drag a blue bidet home has a perverse sense of humor!

I really like herbs but choked up on the herbal suggestion. The bidet has never been used, just the idea of it! I do hope some day to do pot marigolds tho...

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

What's a roundabout?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Kind of like a traffic circle with no stop signs. Traffic can merge from many side streets and you do round the circle to get to your exit. They are common in Europe and very efficient...

Well, I thought I had this one figured out. Saw a picture somewhere on DG of a small bubbler fountain that would be appropriate for a bidet. I had seen small water plants at a garden center. Just the right combination if the greens were compatible with this startling blue. I went back to shop the plants. While approaching the display I saw they were marked down 50%. I said YES, this is a sign, my decision was right! When I got over to the display, (had to tour the green stuff on the way) All the containers had been allowed to dry out. No way! I might have bought them for less and taken a chance but wasn't about to gamble on that. The poor little clerk working was a school girl and had no authority to take less. And at that time on a Sunday, no one else was there. Another sign ~ tells me I'm back to square one... I do hope to track down the post that had the fountain in the small pot though.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

That's the problem with garden centers. They get so big they can't afford real gardeners full-time. If they might as well be selling cereal or CDs, you're taking your chances. It breaks my heart to see the plants suffer because there's no one there who actually knows what to do.

pod, the Universe is just steering you in the right direction. What you'll wind up with will be perfect. I still vote for my idea of irises shooting up and pennyroyal dripping down, but that's just my sense of humor. The bubbling fountain would be a hoot.

ooohhh, how cute, a blue bidet!! How about the shocking pink and white periwinkles with some sunny yellow marigolds next spring; and some gorgeous mums this fall in similar colors?....Podster, you probably already know this, but I planted several arum italicum in containers this past year. Beautiful foliage, ... but a neighbor informed me of their toxicity to children and pets. And after researching found out they have glass-like particles in their leaves and stems and cuts the skin upon handling. Ripped them out immediatedly, for the pumpkins sake... and yes, I had a few tiny cuts from the foliage on my arms and I was wearing gloves. Either way, I love the blue bidet!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Toxic hmmm? I could just flush them... : )). Oddly when we had this in front of the 2nd hand store I did at various times plant pink geranuims, during Memorial day and the 4th, I had hot red geraniums with small flags in it. Did petunias, pansies etc at different times of year here.

Right now the more I try to decide, the more confused I get... Am still studying on it, sorry... pod
