Al ~ I grew "Jean" last year and found her to be a dark shade of pink-lavender in the morning and a softer shade in the evening. It was like looking at 2 different flowers, I really enjoyed going out twice a day to see her change.
Good luck on the "aloof" neighbor!
What's Growing - Part 6
I loved the squirrel pictures!
Al, like I said, when the 'For Sale' sign goes up at Mrs Aloof's, let me know. You can plant anything you want after I move in :-). I like hydrangeas and I don't have any. Dahlias are nice, helenium, any of your favorites...just leave me room for my roses.
Hi, pix. I'm in denial about being back at work. Shouldn't complain. I have a really good job, good boss. Lots of stress. But that's what gardening's for, right?
hey, if anybody needs any japanese beetles or grasshoppers, I'd be glad to pack some up. I've never seen them like this.
I love the way my asiatics smell when I walk by...so heady!
bigcityal, I don't have much luck with seeds at all so I rarely try.
Pixie, Thanks, We do seem to pick some of the same ones, I've seen some of yours that I'd like to add to my want list.
A yankee cat, Thanks , I'm glad you enjoyed them, I wish they would have stayed longer, But, I've got other boxes I can move the cam to that I know have nesters in them.
Gram, The beetles and grasshoppers are really bad this year!! It's a like a constant struggle to keep them off the plants!! One thing I really noticed thats missing this year is toads, I usually always have toads around eating the bugs, I have yet to see one this year! Has anyone else noticed it??
I did a quick collarge but it didn't come out like I wanted it to, Oh well, Maybe when I have more time I'll get it right-
pixie- i would love some recipes for daylilies. every year, the kids and i gather something that the pilgrims might have had at the first thanksgiving and cook it. everyone gets a taste. last year, it was cattails. the year before, plantains. usually makes us thankful for grocery stores
love all the pics. i only have yellow and orange daylilies growing in the ditch next to my house. didn't realize they came in so many beautiful colors. i have to get some now. do the other colors naturalize as well as the orange ones?
ericalynne~ Some daylilies naturalize well others take a while. Usually on the third year you should have a good clump.
I have : Fried daylilies, Saute'ed Daylilies, Dalily Bud Casserole, Daylily Soup, and Daylily Chicken. Which one would you like to try?? I think it's neat you do that with the kids, does make them appreciate the stores doesn't it?
Iris, I like your collage. The background texture is neat.
Hey, pixie. don't let your DH experiment with anything but plants LOL the daylily is really pretty, but we don't want any 6 legged-frogs or anything. love the color on Barbaresco.
ericalynne, will you let us know how the daylilies taste? the buds do kind of look good.
Al, I have to ask, does sneezeweed make you sneeze or stop you from sneezing? I had no idea they got so big. I like the look of the flowers, but 6' is a little overwhelming. are there smaller ones?
gram
Pixie, Is Cedar waxwing an unusual form dl? (It's nice) Love all the unknown"s, Especially the first one' s color and eyezone. Is Dallas Star a big flower dl? Dizzy is definately different, neat looking! ?The double your DH created seems of heavy substance, Very Nice!
I only have about 2 or 3 more DL's that haven't bloomed yet this year ( I need more DL's!!! LOL!) I also have a couple that did not put up scapes this year, Don't know why, Have you ever had any that did that?
Gram, Thankyou! For the background, I used a photo of a sunset and changed it to colored pencil.
Pixie - do you save your lily seeds?
Iris ~ "Cedar Waxwing" is an older one, Griesbach 1979 It has 6" blooms approx. 30-34" scape. I don't think its considered an unusual form, could be because it wasn't opened all the way yet. Took the photo first thing this morning.
"Dallas Star" is 6.5"-7 inch blooms for me and it almost glows at dawn or dusk. I really lie this daylily. It is also an older one bred by Ferris in 1976.
As far as the daylily w/out scapes...YES!! This year "Indian Giver" has not put up one as of yet so it's not looking good! "Fruit Loops" hasn't now that I think of it! Jeez, im going to have to really look at them all now that you mentioned it.
Here's "Cedar Waxwing" taken a few minutes ago.
I just started last fall but only a few. The "creations" that my husband made was just a fluke of him messing around. (long story!) The seeds droped and grew by them self, no help on my part! Here's another of his "creations".
Like Gram said.....we wont let him mess with the wildlife!!!!

I just bought (like I need more!) "Fat Lady Sings" and "Christmas Is".
Al ~ The grass is neat, ive never tried growing it before, is it hard or easy? And the hydrangea is beautiful, but how come the japanese beetles haven't touched yours??? Do you have a deal with them or something?? PLEASE share your secret!!!
I buy the grass in small pots -it's easier and faster.
I don't HAVE any japanese beetles, they are in WI - just not everywhere yet. If I get any of those on my hydrangea there will be a war!
Al, I'm losing track. what is your 1st most favorite? how big is your 'big city' yard? I know you have spread out over the neighborhood, but it seems you have an incredible variety of plants, and not tiny shy little things, either. the fountain grass is pretty...I can't grow anything that resembles any kind of grass...the Canada geese think it is a salad.
Pixie, let us know when hit you hit your NEXT 100 dl's and we'll get together the intervention.
my one and only hosta, Francee, is finally starting to bloom. nothing on the Stargazer front yet...I feel like an expectant father, but I just love this lily. I cut a nice stalk of Le Reve and brought it in the house to get me by. I don't have the huge variety of plants most of you have so I need to get a lot of mileage out of the ones I have until I build up my inventory LOL
gram
actually, some of the heather and heath I put in last year is finally starting to take hold. it will probably be another year or 2 before it really looks like anything, but they aren't dying and I'm starting to get some blooms. a lot of the scotch heather (calluna vulgaris) starts blooming in July and Aug. I'm not even sure of all of the varieties...have to sort them out as they bloom
gram ~ The hosta is huge and beautiful! (I like the lilies too! grin). And I am not telling you about any more lilies that I purchase, including the bag of spotted orientals I picked up today for 30% off. Opps! I think I need to send you "Custard Candy" and then we'll see who needs the intervention! And what about Al?? He has 2 addictions, Dahlia's and neighbors yards!!!!!
Al- beautiful combo of plants and leaves in the grass pic.
Pixie- Barbaresco and the Unknowns. Love them. They sound like a band!
Here's a really weird photo I just took tonight- 8:15 pm in my circle garden. Hope you like it, I got 4 mosquito bites in the 2 minutes I was outside taking the pic!
Here is what is supposed to be a mix of Muscadet, Black Beauty, Acapulco, and maybe Marco Polo and Mona Lisa Lilies? I can't remember what I bought. They don't look quite like what I think I ordered!
Oh and some purple Monarda.
Gram - Francee is nice - tough little bugger too. I have about 30 hostas - way below hostanut status. I like the heather - I have never tried it, I think it is so so here. My favorite hydrangea hasn't opened fully yet. My lot isn't that big, I have basically all border beds fully around the house and half of the outer sides.
Pixie - I like the orange vol and your dh's first pic
Ivy - I think you wanted the Catherine Woodbury dl pic right - it opened but was missing some petals so I'll catch the next flower.
