I'd do expoloratory digging, but my shovel is not well-trained. I'm afraid it will "shishka-bob" anything I may have left...
Species Lily
Isn't this where a garden fork somes in handy??
I am going to do this with a small hand trowel and try not to disturb them if they are healthy. If I run into mush I'll know I need to order new.
My ground is like rock again--a hand trowel would only dent the surface. Need some rain, but AFTER we leave on the trip.
Who ya guys kidding... We are literally on a rock bed, granite to be exact. Think we got all of a few inches of dirt that was put on there to try to germinate the lawn.. So most of my stuff are in pots and stuff I put in the ground, I have to add dirt to that area..
Years back, I once found a wild Lilium philadelphicum (Wood lily) blooming from a crack in the natural basalt outcrops near Ely, MN, about 7 miles south of Canada.
well that's reassuring.. guess the DLs I have will still grow okay even if we're on a granite bed... :)
My businesspartner threw some wild daylilies out into the alley. They looked awful for a couple of weeks, then managed to put down roots under the paving . I don't know how they do it, but they look GREAT now. Tough.
Wish my lilies would be that tough & rabbit resistant.
Happy new year to all liliarians . New word maybe?????
Neil,
lease put me down for some seed for next season.
Maybe I didn't send you my Cdn. addy. The seeds you sent a couple of years ago were to my US addy.
Cheers

This thread is so very long. I tried to read it very carefully. Neal, what is the lily from the first picture of the thread? I can't follow what you decided? Anything special I should put when I google it. I'm going to see if I can buy some bulbs of it somewhere. That and Lady Alice and Mint fudge.
(I know you must think I'm crazy considering what I've ordered in THREE co-ops. :-)
Hi Inanda, good to hear from you! Be sure to remind me later in summer, but I'd be happy to. I'll ask my friend in Morehead; he may have some seed in the freezer from last fall.
3gardeners, you can feel perfectly sane among this bunch, ....birds of a feather, ya know, LOL! We finally decided that lily is most likely L.canadense.
Thanks! I looked it up and agree, but for some reason I seem to like the tone of yours better. Maybe it's just the photography and light. Anyway, it's a very pretty lily.
As a species, they often vary quite a bit from each other. These plants show more red than a lot of the pics I've seen of them.
