At least they came up. That's as good as I've done so far.
Species Lily
LOL.. and they were tricky to germinate, so I feel good about them. Seeds were from NALS so I'm out a buck.
I'm still waiting for mine to germinate but I have hopes. I dug around and found one whick looked plump, so I will leave them to the course of nature.
Our weather is up and down like a yo-yo, some days still only 14C max, not long ago down to/up to 12C (more than once). Once mid July has passed things start to happen here, I have a Podophyllum I had nearly given up on popped up. Today it's pleasant and not raining (yet), around 17C and windy with the sun popping in and out.
Great to hear, Lefty! Must go give mine a look, excitement rebuilds! Thanks for the progress report :) Also, I've been meaning to tell you those Tiger Babies were GORGEOUS!
My friend who has L.canadense growing wild in his yard told me they have increased well, so I'll have plenty more fresh seed this fall to share. And I was thrilled to find out the one mature plant in my old garden (that will be moved this fall) has 10 blooms on it!
Pard, I'd be happy to send you some if you want to give 'em another try. Hopefully you've got the hard part mastered.
Janet, same here last I checked; plump, healthy looking seed still there. My Bellingham babies have babies! Little bulblets on the ends of the stems. I love lilies that are vigorous like that! I think I may even see a bloom or two next year.
I purchased this as 'Bright Star', but there is some conflicting info out there about it being the same as 'White Henryii' and 'Lady Alice'. Whatever it is, I love the whiskers it inherited from L.henryii.
I have never grown lilies from seed and would like to have a try at it. How much do I send?
Neal, I'm no expert but the pics I've seen of Lady Alicw and White Henryii don't look like yours. It's a beauty!
My bellingham has increased with several stems, the flowers have just opened on the main stem and most small stems have a flower on too, not bad for new bulbs, this is only it's second year.
I will have to check on my little Bellinghams grown from bulblets, that's good going. We are having a cold summer so I don't expect much, but the parent is doing well.
Ten blooms on a Lilium canadense - - - very impressive, Neal. Is your friend culturing them at all? Even if it is only weeding?
TwinLakesChef, I'll post here when the seed are ready, then you can send SASE. That goes for anyone out there who would like to try some too :)
Janet, I've noticed those differences too. Some of the source offerings I've seen for 'Bright Star' don't even look like this one, but have more recurving petals. I love that color combination, so I should just get all 3 varieties and compare, lol!
Lefty, the 10 bloomed beauty is the same one above pictured last year. It is being cultivated in a garden bed with rich soil. And the real kicker is the friend who now lives at my old place found a wild stand of them at the edge of the woods along the drive way! How did I live there nearly 4 years and miss those?!
Neal,
Please send me some this year. Think I wasn't around whenyou were asking for addys. and sending out the seeds.
inanda- hoping that your Formosum are still behaving. You have lots of seed from them this year too.
Meant to say I ordered some canadense, only to be told - one not 4. Grr. Bother. Oh well, yours are more exciting anyway. To grow from seed is always more exciting.
inanda
gemini,
Thank you for your kind offer; I'll keep watching the thread.
Ooooh.. If there's any extra, can I get a couple of seeds too?
canadense seeds? would love to get some if you have leftovers.
in other words, me too me too! :)
I'll let you know when they are ripe.
Thank you!!!
They were very prolific with seed last year, so if thats any indication I'll have plenty for everyone :)
I'll take lily seeds anyone sends me.. Just let me know who to send the SASE(s) to..
I'm just still kinda peevish about being screwed over by directgardening and not sure if I want to spend more that can be bad... I know.. I know.. Lesson learned by lots of other people. But still, very aggravating when I think about it..
How many seeds should I include in a mailing; I presume wrapping in bubblewrap is a good idea. A lot of the seeds have fallen on the ground; do they need to dry out some before mailing?
I think we are offering the same seeds but mine isn't as orange in the pics.
OK, Boojum,
I thought you were offering the seeds from the picture of yellow ones you posted.
Some clarification needed here.................
I think boojum meant that her seed is the same as Neals (gemini), not yours TwinLakes, but her lily is not as orange looking as Neals even though they are both L. canadense. There are some variations on L. canadense.
The small balls on your lily TwinLakes are bulbils, that is small bulbs. They shouldn't really be allowed to dry, as no lily bulb benefits from drying and will grow best if kept in growth. Once they fall to the ground I would expect in their natural situation they would root with the rains, often this would be in leaf litter at the edges of woods so they would keep moist. My Bellingham hybrid makes bulbils, they also start to root while still on the stem so when they fell they would have a head start.
I hope that is now clearer!
Thanks wallaby. That is exactly right.
I find my tiger lilies with the black bulbils can be invasive here. They don't just stay where I want them! Baby plants are all over and I weed them. I always wish someone would hang out while I weed nice plants out of wrong areas so I could fill their arms. A fantasy of mine cause no one ever is here when I weed (wonder why) no matter how many people say they'll come. Gardeners are ruthless.
Good, Wallaby, it was getting confusing. Boojum's L. canadense is closer to the "normal" type - yellow flowers. Orange ones, and fading red L. canadense are the less common variations. I would expect the seedlings to bloom approximately the same color as the parents.
OK Thanks for the clarification.
Ones that already fell on the ground look crinkled so maybe they got too dry and won't germinate. I lifted some nice ones off the plant and they are fat juicy lookin' little guys. So I can go ahead and mail them to whoever wants them.
Just D-Mail me your addy.
Maxine, one of the American series varieties I got from the same co op looks like your Bright Star, with the tricolor markings. I like it, but still really want to try Luminaries too; the coloring looks to be more intense on them.
Lefty, your White Henryii looks close to mine. I have 3 and noticed color variation among the 3, some more gold in the center and some more orange.
My Bright Star was consumed by rabbits and deer 2 years running so I don''t think I'll ever see that one again. Definately will have to order another. I have Lady Alice and last year (2006) at the NALS Show Frans Officer and Eugene Fox both agreed that what I had was Lady Alice, so I am feeling fairly confident about showing this picture for comparison.
Oooh, Lilyfan, that is beautiful. :)
Oh I like that one! Are all those on one stem?
Maxine
Beautiful! The petals are more curved back on that one like L.henryii.
Gorgeous, Sue!
There were 2 main stems and several smaller stems. 2 stems in the same area are not Lady Alice and I have posted a picture of it elsewhere for me it is a noid but it might be one that someone else is familar with. Hint hint :-) http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/750965/ the pictures are about halfway at this time.
Sue, your Lady Alice is spectacular!! I saw one bloom over in sewnsew's West Branch garden last year. Coveting....
Love Lady Alice.....should get that one this year if I can.....White Henry is a favorite and Madame Butterfly from last years society sale is nice too...both are blooming now.
I've sure enjoyed this lily, the papillae is incedible! And the color ain't half bad either.
White henri I never came up--frost or bunnies? henri didn't make it either. I'll just buy & try them again--too cool to miss.
Neither of mine came up this year either. I assumed it was the late hard freeze in April.
I have to do some exploritory digging and see if they are there and healthy or not. I sure missed them in the gardens this year.
