FOUND ART - what junk do you use for containers?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

The sedums might be some I should look at. I love their colors. Yes, more photos please. You know every so often I see a container that I think about using for plants (or look at the bidet) and think of this thread. I go back and read thru it occasionally too. Great fun! Ms. Carrie, I agree. I love the spillers...

Very nice, Lily, so pretty, makes me wish it were summer. One question: where do they put the mail?

hi...i haven't figured out what colors to plant in the blue sink...hoping set up a little outdoor powder room to include an older metal sewing mannequin who wants some flowering vines :-)
i'm new at planting & having anything live, so right now everything is a learning experience....lynda

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Lynda ~ I hope you will post photos when you get the powder room done... it sounds delightful. I really am confused about what colors with this brilliant blue bidet. Not to worry ~ even when you are old at planting, it will still be "a learning experience". ; ))

Lilyhostaky ~ I love the patriotic colors of the mailbox. The flower colors are more brilliant in the north than here. If I guess correctly you have the box sitting on its' butt? Does it drain? I have a mailbox in need of plants and a paint job. It has an ugly color scheme... Another challenge.

Flemingsburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Podster
Yes the mailbox is sitting on its but, and it does drain. I didn't paint my mailbox, I just left it scruffy ( is that a word) looking. Last year my granddaughter put pink impatients in it. That was pretty with the blue mailbox too.

Lynda I think that something pink and then put something white cascading would be pretty.... girley looking

Carrie...If that was my real mailbox,,,there wouldn't be room for all my seed packages that I receive...hahaha

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

thanks for the suggestion...i do think girly will work well :-)

Laceys Spring, AL(Zone 7a)

I promised a couple of weeks ago to post a picture of the now-brown creeping jenny in the birdbath. I finally got outside Saturday while it was still mostly warm and took a photo. It really was much fuller looking in the summer, but you get the idea.

Pauletta, thanks for posting the plant list for your sink. Those sedums are a nice addition in your sink with the jenny. And I like your patriotic mailboox too.

Outsideplaying......I like that name...Its what I like to do...
Do you have a hole in that birdbath for drainage? I have a birdbath like that and I have been thinking that I would plant something in it...The birds don't use it as a bath anyway. Its pretty deep.

Daisy...I bet your tiered birdbaths are beautiful...

Laceys Spring, AL(Zone 7a)

Hi Pauletta,
No, I don't have a hole in mine. It's shallow, old and very porous anyway - won't hold water for a day for use as a birdbath.

Elaine

Assonet, MA(Zone 6b)

OUTSIDEPLAYING IS A GREAT NAME AND PASTIME. I LOVE YOUR BIRDBATH. IT'S CHOCK FULL OF CHARACTER. IT MUST BE SPECTACULAR IN BLOOM. PAULETTA THEY ARE SUCH FUN - THEY ARE SO DRAMATIC, THEY CAN SET THE MOOD OF ANY NOOK OR SEATED AREA. I'M GETTING SOOO ITCHY FOR SPRING. DOES ANYONE HAVE "ITCH" RELIEF? HAVE A GREAT DAY!

(Zone 1)

Carrielamont: What a great thread you began last July! I bet it's still going strong thru next summer too! Love all the photo's of unique planters! I so wish I could find "Treasures" like those!

Liyhostaky: Love the mailbox idea. Does it sit pretty flat and steady, without of tipping over? And, I gotta ask ... I see you are from Kentucky .... does the rest of your user name mean you like Lily's & Hosta's? I really get a kick out of some of the user names here on DG...some pretty cute names are used!

Pod: I think "Poddy" is cute too. That Blue Bidet you have .... would look great with yellow & white flowers, or yellow & red, or red, white & blue or even Pink .... some trailing green like the Turtle Vine. Whatever you plant in there I sure hope you will post a photo! That will be a really neat container!

(Zone 1)

Carrielamont asked about other, indoor containers. I never can find anything unique, but I do put a lot of house plants in glass vases, jars ....etc. Here's a photo I just posted on another forum where we were discussing this very thing:

Thumbnail by plantladylin
Wingate, MD(Zone 7b)

Plantladylin..That's a great idea, using vases, jars etc. I have all kinds of vases, teapots and jars in the shed. I'll have to go out there and rescue some. Do you have problems with watering because of no drain holes.

(Zone 1)

Chesapeake .... You have to be VERY careful not to overwater anything that doesn't have drain holes. I always put a layer of pebbles in the bottom of my container, then the soil and plant. And, I water lightly, VERY lightly .... every couple of weeks. I stick my finger down into the soil to test for dryness before watering. If it feels moist, I do not water. You can have root rot very easily when planting like this if you overwater!

Flemingsburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Plantlady
Yes I love lily's and hostas. That is my main flowers, but I am getting lots more thru wintersowing. I have had the mailbox for 2 years and it has not turned over yet. It sets flat. I haven't thought of putting dirt in clear jars and planting it, but I have a peace lily in a clear jar of water. I have been wanting to make me a terrarium. I really love your clear jars and plants. I have a bunch of teapots, but I just know I would overwater them. I overwater everything...HAHA

Daisey...I will have to try teiring this spring...
Yes I have itch relief...It is called WINTER SOWING...

I missed this thread when it first started. But I would like to add a few of my treasures.

This one is a cheap plastic planter found at a garage sale. Filled with semps.

I decided to get rid of my basket collection and decided to put semps in them for a summer or 2 till they rotted. Here is one of my ducks with semps.

Here is my Buddah I picked up at a garage sale. I like to keep him in my Iris patch.
You have to look closely, he is in the back on your right side.

And here is my last one ...
It is a metal cat tea candle holder. She is just a decoration and is on her last year this year ... I think. She is really starting to rust. :o(
She is on the lower left hand side of the picture.

Twofew... I love the piggy planter. I always look for potential planters at garage sales and fleas. Love the yard art too and think you should not give up on the cat tea holder. If you can't abide the rust, pick a color and spray paint. Make it a delightful accent for the flower beds. Maybe purple ?? : ))

Flemingsburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Hi toofew
I love the pig!!! He is so cute... You know I have been getting all my baskets together so I can plant in them come spring. I am tired of them and thought they would be pretty outside containers...
Pod ...a good idea spray paint that cat, don't get rid of it.
Come on spring!!!!!!!!!!

Strasburg, VA(Zone 6b)

what a great way to start this day off...wonderful ideas for some containers in & outside...perfect timing as i've been going through things from our last move & this is very creative way to use some items i don't have room for inside!

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

plantladylin, I've been eyeing some of the discounted plants at our Lowe's. One in particular caught my eye. Looked pretty sad, but when I saw the same plant healthy on a different shelf ... it had me thinking of rescuing that other plant. Your terrarium idea would be perfect for it ... I think.
We do have an old glass jar I picked up at a garage sale years ago that we used with the peace lily and the beta fish. It has been sitting in the basement for years.
Thanks for the description of how to set the terrarium up and watering.

Thanks for the complements. The pig is one of my favorites too. I laughed when I found him. Had to do some major cleaning on him, algea and mold galore.

podster, Purple Cat? LOL You must love the color purple!

larlienda, you will have to post what good ideas you come up with!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Purple I love, but I think your cat in any startling color would be frivolously fun...
: ))

(Zone 1)

Toofewanimals: I agree with Pod .... you should paint that cat a very Vibrant color for the garden .... Rustoleum Paint .... sure comes in handy. I have been saving those huge plastic kitty litter container's and bought some Krylon spray paint for use on plastic, but haven't painted them yet. It seems like every time I think about doing it, it's too windy. I plan on drilling holes in some to use as planters!

Oh, I love that Piggie too! I have a wicker pig that I just stick a pot down inside, it's out on my deck somewhere ... can't remember what plant is sitting inside. Maybe I should think about planting something directly into it .... I will try to post a photo in a bit. When I bought the wicker pig many years ago they had 3 sizes, I got the medium one and wish I had gotten all three for a family! Now that store no longer exists ....

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

plantlady, I think I know the wicker animals you are talking about. I picked one up at a garage sale several years ago, but it is a frog and pretty big. I couldn't dare part with that basket, it is stored in the basement now.

I'll think about painting the cat .... hummmm, I'll have to let you know what color. LOL

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

I posted this picture on another thread and Vossner suggested I post it on the Container Forum. I think this is an appropriate place to post it.

I found this little old drunk at the Goodwill in San Antonio when Connie and I evacuated there for Hurricane Rita. I paid 50 cents for him. There was a small piece in the top that was broken, but I really didn't care because I knew I was going to give him some "hair".

I'm always looking for unique things that I can use for planters.

Shortly after I "arrived" at Dave's, I saw a thread where someone had planted something in their tennis shoes. When I saw this pair of boots at Goodwill, I immediately thought of that thread and bought them. They were in my size, but I don't see ME wearing them. Not in THIS lifetime! HAHAHA

I have a collection of monkeys on my deck. I'm always trying to incorporate plants into the monkeys.

I have one jade plant that has given me probably 20 new plants. This is one of them.

Here is another photo from my deck. If I can get a little bit of dirt (or pebbles) into something, I use it!

Here are more of my jade plants.

UQT, I can imagine the woman at Goodwill that sold you the tennies telling her friends about this woman that actually BOUGHT those tennies. I love it. Are you growing the lucky bamboo in water? or in dirt?

The purple cat reminds me of a poem we knew when children... think it went like this.
I never saw a purple cow (cat), never thought I'd see one. But I can tell you anyhow, I'd rather see, than be one... : ) Who knows painting the cat a brilliant color may start a gardening trend...
I do love all things purple. I have 3 old metal lawn chairs. To appease DH I painted 2 navy with white frame. The 3rd one I painted purple with white trim. Even he liked it! The photo shows a varigated purple heart sitting in my purple chair. Needs a fresh coat of purple this spring.

All of my bamboo is in water with nugget size pebbles. They are all inside the house at this moment in time. The leaves are turning brown because I can never remember to fill them up.

(Zone 1)

Here's my Wicker Pig Planter ... it's old and shows it .... I think I need to give this guy a good cleaning and paint job! I don't have anything planted in him right now ... that's just a plant rooting in water in a mason jar, stuck in the pig planter.

Thumbnail by plantladylin
Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Now how do you folks plant in wicker baskets, tennis shoes, boots, etc? A pot in side? A plastic liner? It rains so much around here... or at least more than it does in TX! Last spring we were almost washed away.

xxx, Carrie

(Zone 1)

Carrie: I usually just sit the pot down inside the basket with a plastic bowl instead of a saucer to catch the water. I have planted directly into old wicker baskets that eventually rot from rain, soil, watering etc. When I plant directly into the basket, I line the bottom with spagnum moss and then put the soil in and the plant.

We are getting much needed rain here right now. YIPPEE! We have been so dry, way below normal rainfall for the past year ... last I heard we were - 12". I am doing a happy rain dance ... but concerned because we may get severe weather later tonight, thunderstorm and tornado warnings until 1:00 a.m. so probably won't sleep well tonight. I am just so Thankful for this rain right now - it is pouring and my plants are loving it!

Flemingsburg, KY(Zone 6a)

Plantlady
With you getting so much rain now, you better watch that pig. He will be trying to get outside and root around in the mud.
I really like him, he is so cute...Pauletta

(Zone 1)

Pauletta: LOL .... he needs a bath, and a paint job! So faded from the sun and weather over the years, I felt embarassed for him showing his picture ! :)

Trenton, MI(Zone 5b)

I love him plantlady, he can come rut in the mud with my piggy anytime! Although, I think my pig is a male, he has a smirk on his face. :o)
