We've had three pets, all dogs, from rescue shelters and all were abused in some ways. Our current Harry is very touchy about being pet on his hind quarters and we've been told it's because he was kicked repeatedly. Makes me want to cry.
FOUND ART - what junk do you use for containers?
No, Pirl ~ Don't cry, be glad you were able to give him a good and loving home!
What do I see there Ms. Carrie? Is the spiller bacopa? It makes a pretty display...
podster,
Where in deep east Texas are you? I am in east Texas too
Morning ~ We are about 50 miles from anywhere, or you go to the middle of nowhere and turn right. Seriously, we are about 10 miles from Toledo Bend and it is in the woods. Nearby communities are Possum Trot, Goober Hill and mail is San Augustine. I guess east Texas is huge 'cause I've not heard of Emory, where are you?
LOL...I have heard of Toledo Bend but I have no idea wahere it is. I have never heard of the other places except maybe St Augustine
but maybe that was grass...LOL We are about an hour NW of Tyler. Now EVERYBODY knows where Canton is... We are about 30 min N of Canton.
Ms. Pod, yes, the spiller is mostly bacopa with a few lone callibrachia (sp? I mean those tiny petunia-type things), and the killer, well I guess hmm, the last one or two lisianthus blooms, and happy pansies on the far right, and waaaay in the back of the aluminum thing is a button fern, feeling puzzled because she thought she was purchased as a houseplant, acting as filler.
I'm sorry it took me so long. My DH bought me a new cord and then, in emptying his closet [so he could install a closet thingie], found another new one still in its blister back and THEN we found my original cord!
I DON'T KNOW WHERE CANTON, TX IS! What am I, chopped liver? But I do know where Canton, Mass is (3 miles south), and none of you East Texans do, so there!
xxxx, Carrie
Carrie ~ glad you found the cord, now you can join in with photos again. Now my camera has gone south... oh well so are the flowers.
Yardqueen ~ I am probably closer to La than Tx. Toledo Bend is the resevoir that separates the states. Emory doesn't ring a bell, will have to find a map. There is a plant round up in Tyler, I can't go as it is a busy time of year, are you going to make it?
Yep, I've been to Canton and enjoyed it but DH refuses to go anymore. Carrie, the only folks who know Canton, Tx is are junquers, flea marketeers, garage salers. It is an addiction. Canton is a huge monthly flea market held on the first (first Monday trade day) full weekend of the month. Hard to describe that date. Anyway, it started in the olden days as a trade day when the ranchers, farmers would go to town, tend to business and trade goods. The small town capitalized on it and it is booming one weekend a month. Vendors like the food booths actually buy their spaces for large dollars. It has been many years since we have been but there is a section that is for animals, the crafts are in a pavillion and an antiques area and well as just plain junque. Of course they all overlap. There is a camping area for vendors and shoppers alike. Many folks go for the long weekend and when tired, will go back to the camper or rv and rest. For us it is about 1 1/2 hour drive one way and we try to do it in our one day off. By the end of it, our tails were dragging ~ just showing our age : )) pod
Carrie,
Sorry!!! There probably are a FEW people out there that don't know about Canton, Tx but not very many! I will be VERY surprised if podster doesn't know...
Canton, Tx is a HUGE (even by Texas standards) flea market... Probably 1000 acres....where people come to buy and sell pretty much everything under the sun. People from other states even...LOL People rent spaces, booths and there are even several huge closed pavillions where one escape the elements to sell and purchase their hearts desire. You can buy anything from crafts to antiques, clothes to pets, furniture, you name it! And there's lot of food to eat while you are shopping...all of the things you would find at a State Fair. My favorite is Funnel Cakes, but the corn-on-the-cob-on-a-stick is a close 2nd! LOL
Carol
Podster,
It has changed a lot over the years. It is bigger than ever now and even the parking is big business...LOL I myself have only been two or three times in the 25+ years I have been in this area, (DH doesn't like to go either) and I am just a few miles away...I would go more often just to see what's there but I can't walk very far anymore (arthritis) We pass by though, although we really try to not go through Canton on 1st Monday week-end!
Carol
It was probably in the late 1980's when we would go. They were charging ample to park even then. I found I needed to take a little red wagon to carry stuff. DH also didn't like that no one would deal. If you didn't buy at their price, the next guy that came along would. These days, we try to stick to smaller fleas.
These days I can't even afford the small fleas!!! LOL
My DH has heard of Tyler!!! Anything good near Austin?
xxxx, Carrie
Don't know of much. We go through it on the way to San Antonio to see my parents (I was born & raised in SA) . My DH would like to avoid even doing that, cause Austin is a pain to go through...LOL
Carrie The first photo looks like it is out of a designer gardening magazine. Sooo Pretty! You are making me lust after a wheelbarrow too. Yours is so cool. What is WSing? This winter I hope to continue gardening with DG.
Pod,
(Batting her eyelashes) oooooh, thank you so very much. You can't have mine - unless you're willing to come get it! LOL!
WS is wintersowing; you know about that, right?
http://davesgarden.com/forums/f/coldsow/all/
If not, it's not too late to start, in fact it's a fine time!
Thanks again !
xxxx, Carrie
WS ~ man, oh man, do you guys know what a monster you are creating here...
Podster! I love your idea! And to think..I BOUGHT a wrought iron chair to sit one of my containers in!! DOH!
Turbosbabe, you made me read to the top of this thread looking for a brilliant idea I had, still haven't found it. : ]
I am embarassed to report the the blue bidet hasn't changed although the variegated purple heart has grown and is blooming.
This was a chair that I hadn't posted here but over in Trash to Treasure forum. http://davesgarden.com/place/t/622839/
The galvanized bucket of Sedum Autumn Joy is now blooming...
Pirl ~ if you are watching this thread, while you were feeling badly about mistreated animals, I was deliberating over what to do with this guy... drop down to the Oct 2nd post of mine and you will see why I was distracted. http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/648077/
One more to add to the dumpee collection. If he grows to his legs, he'll be big.
and now to you Ms. Carrie, your plants are as gorgeous at the end of season as they were at the beginning. I saw you had another thread about bringing them in before it is too late. Where on earth do you put all of these or do you let them die with the winter?
I don't know yet, Pod! The Perilla and those types can be frozen and composted, but the EE is really too spectacular! The wheelbarrow just freezes - it's not really deep enough for anything serious to grow in. The pansies sometimes make it outside and sometimes don't, but that's more up to what kind of winter we have then anything else, plus after making it through winter and/or summer, pansies don't really look their best. This is the first time we've had the New Guineas in an actual nice pot - but there's not really enough light inside for them to be happy. Putting most of these annuals inside is like a life sentence in solitary, and since they know there is an afterlife as compost, they'd rather a quick death, going out with a blaze of glory, than languishing inside! Lots of annuals up here are dead, or at least done with their main act.

"... since they know there is an afterlife as compost, they'd rather a quick death, going out with a blaze of glory, than languishing inside!" You could make going to hedoubletoothpicks sound like a vacation to a tropical place Carrie... : ]
...only for annuals, Pod, only for annuals! I don't count people as annuals, except some which are definitely invasive and self-seeding!

Podster ....I would say you need to keep him or find him a good home..... look at his eyes you can just see the intelligence there.....He is looking at you with an I am not afraid of you l..... but I am not sure you like me look..Some animals have a "nobodies home look in there eyes.".. that is the ones to be careful of... It is still hot for a while and cool for a while here so my coleus are still doing great... growing larger every day... I took some babies and they are looking good... I just checked them and the jumped overnight.... have a good one shirleyt
Hello Shirley T ~ Yes, I think Red is a keeper. He's very agreeable considering he didn't have much guidance. Doesn't dig, tear things up, hasn't molested the first plant for which I am grateful! He has a bark that makes us both jump out of our skin and doesn't bark excessively, grateful again. My senior cat Roscoe has already manually retrained him about cat chasing. If he looked unsure of me liking him, it was my fault. I just resent folks not being responsible about pets. I have to remind myself it is NOT his fault. He didn't need to be dumped for sure ~ but maybe he did. He has hit the dog lottery!
We are still hot here too. It will be 95 tomorrow again and sooo dry. I run around trying to water and half wondering if I should let things go. I took quite a few cuttings and am wondering why ~ just more to water and less time to do so. This too will pass... : )) pod
Hey everyone... For those of you who read the coleus forum you know that I finally got my new home. I thought I would post it here just in case you did not see it there... I am still not in it ... lots of stuff to do ... electricity is ready to turn on but I am waiting for sewerage guy to make connection and I need to lay in the water line... just glue and connect... then I can call the cable and electricity and telephone companies to do there thing .... and then once the carpet guys clear out I can move.... they have gone AWOL for two weeks now. Depression abounds..... I thought I would be happy but I just want to get it done.... It has been so long in limbo.
Woo hoo, Shirley! I have been lurking and listening (though not on the Coleus forum) so I know a little about what you've been through. The last few steps seem to drag on endlessly, I agree, when it's something that is in someone else's hands, and not your own. Hang in there! Can we all come to the house-warming party?
xxxx, Carrie
carrielamont check out my diary to see the pics of the storm damage.... they are in my garden pics section... before after and during cleanup ... Not finished yet....working on it... just maintaining what I have done is a job in itself....just click on my name to go there. here is an update pic of my wheelbarrow.
Wow, gorgeous, Shirley, no wonder you go to the coleus forum! Down there it looks so lush and green. Up here, things are drying up and falling off. Can you even tell it's fall?
xxxx, Carrie
YEA Shirley T ~ a new home! Nearing the end of a long trail or was it a trial. It will be so nice when ready, we are all happy for you.
But I gotta say, you gals and your wheelbarrows are driving me nuts! Makes me want ~ thanks! : ] pod
No there is not much sign of fall here .... a few cool mornings and lots of promises of a cold front but some how it never shows... it is nice in the morning and gets very hot rapidly.... and dry dry dry..... Things are getting done one step at a time.... did the water line today.... cannot wait to get settled and get the deck built so I can plan for lots of coleus next year. and try to do some landscaping on this big corner... shirley...
