Hi all, You know, I never waited for heirlooms but created my own. Oldest sister raised 3 kids w/out a rocking chair while waiting on the family rocker. I own about 10 rockers and no kids. Mom gave 2 DIL's many old things from the farm. Neither girl is still married to brothers and brothers don't have the goodies... oh well. : )) pod
FOUND ART - what junk do you use for containers?
On the other hand, my father's mother gave stuff to my parents when they were married that my mother kept when my parents got divorced. So, I got to grow up with neat family heirlooms, and now my kids are growing up with some of them too!
xxxx,
Carrie
I liked my ex SIL's and their kids my nieces/nephews so I don't begrudge them either. I do understand. pod
Pod I have created a lot of heirlooms too. I learned to crochet young and have made lots of large afghans and a bed spread with roses. I learned ceramics and have made numerous holiday pieces including a nativity set. I have set old family pictures on cd's for each family. And now at this late date I have started to paint... I have done a lighthouse-ocean view landscape that they are all drooling over. I also did a summer cottage painting in the style of Carol Hallock... that they all love. Who knew. All these years of wanting to paint an never trying because I just knew I could not do that... I surprised myself with how well I did... I guess it was a Just do it thing.......
ShirleyT ~ What a talent you have! I really admire that.
DH had an Auntie that took painting up in later years. We were all blessed to receive paintings of hers. We got two! I thought and think that it wonderful. "Just Do It" is right! pod
Thanks...I just wish I would have had this "Just do it attitude " earlier in my life. I still do not know how to swim. I have put that on my.... to do... list. I am a very late learner....shirley
You can do it! When stepchildren were small, they could swim like fish. They could not go to the pool unattended. I spent my summers at the pool and couldn't swim at all! They would have had to rescue me. I had to be a nice stepmom! I taught myself by floating first, am still not a strong swimmer but won't drown... pod
Yardqueen,
What are you growing in there? Looks like delosperma?
xxxx, Carrie
Aw, Carol it's cute! Is delosperma another name for rose moss? I like rose moss, or is it moss rose? Anyway, it's has a lot of endurance. I put it in with a clematis pot last year and fed the clem rose food and watered and it just flourished. Have some in full/all day sun this year with some cactus and it isn't as lush but still stands up in HOT and dry.
Nice planter, very interesting! Is Rose Moss the same as Portulaca? Looks like Portulaca to me.
Sue
TAR, funny you would post that old washing machine planter (cool).. my grandma used to plant a rinse tub with Portulaca (rose moss) every year.
Thanks, Now to find something more antigue to plant in to go with the old dolly. Coleus and Ice plant are in the washer.
Ice plant = delosperma, moss rose = portulaca. But that's not what I expected it to look like!
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/1928/index.html
Moss rose is "supposed to look like this...
http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/88385/
but I am getting the idea that moss rose doesn't just resemble a Rose; they are somehow related!
xxxxx,
Carrie
[Who knew this silly thread would still be going in late Sptember?]
AuntB that is a pretty one. Mine are all red.
Yes it is a fun thread and we hope it continues on. I have an old hand truck or dolly very similar and would have never thought to use it like that. I use it to move big plants around. Great idea and I love the wash tub. Glad you braved us TARogers... : ))
It may not be purselane but it is some sort of succulant plant, and probably a relative of Moss Rose! LOL
I have lots of moss rose this year, but what is funny is that in one bed where it came back on its own the is more of it than there was when I planted it. My cat killed it because she thought that bed was her "litter box"! This year she stays out of it and my dog has decided to make her bed in it. I can't win as far as that bed goes. It has bulbs in it for spring and she has dug a lot of them up...
Oh I am sorry! Aunt B, I looked at your pic again and realized you were saying that this was your ice plant...DUH I have never seen flowers like that on an ice plant! It is very pretty!
YQ, I think just maybe moss rose is not as succulent here in the frozen North as they are down by you. I'm sure I'm wrong. I've had my eye on ice plant (delosperma) for a long time as a solution for my hill-that's-to-steep-for-DH-to-mow-what-with-his-bad-back, but I guess I really should post that issue in perennials! I made a new container out of an aluminum tub and all the annuals that were still going - not found art and besides, I didn't take a picture. But I may post it anyway if I have the energy.
xxx, Carrie
Muster the energy, girl, we'd love to see the picture! The blooms in your area are always so brilliant, I look forward to seeing them. pod
Lordy, I'm sorry I ever brought it up! :>)
Delosperma=ice plant, which alledgedly has little daisy-like flowers, and which I've never seen in person (maybe never will). It's also supposed to be perennial.
moss rose=portuculata, which has little rose-type flowers, they sell it every spring at Home Depot. Up here, it's used as an annual, and comes in a lot of different colors on the same plant. I've never seen it all the same color on one plant before!! Of course, looking again at the cow in question, I realize that has rose-like blooms and not daisy-like ones.
Podster, I DID take a picture of my autumn arrangement but nobody can seem to find the cord that goes from the camera to the computer. I always keep it in my camera case, but I believe I loaned said camera to one of my two children who shall at this time remain nameless. She returned it but since then I haven't seen the cord... woe is me!
xxx, Carrie
Thanks, Carrie. I thought they were 2 different plants... I think I've tried the "ice" plant before and wasn't impressed. Portuculata is an annual here, also and sometimes you can find it all one color. They do self seed readily, so I imagine my grandmother just let them do their thing in the rinse tub.
when they are mixed colors they are mixed plants in the same pot. When you buy flats (as I did) they are separated by color. The ones in the octagon shaped bed came up on their own this year. I haven't planted any thing else in there this year because the dog thinks it is her bed. I got some repellant so we will see what happens. LOL
YQ, I have a large and healthy 'doggoneit' coleus that dogs and cats are supposed to hate the smell of it. May I please send it to you? I hate the smell too. (note: many smells which bother some people do not bother others. Please don't take my dislike of the smell as an indicator of how it would smell to you.)
xxxxx, Carrie
Carrie At least no one hung themselves with "the cord" : )) pod
Carrie,
Can the plant take full sun? Most coleus can't and this bed is in FULL sun. I don't suppose the smell would bother me too much as this bed is far from the house.
Carol
Carrie,
What is the name of the blue and purple flower in the 3rd photo that you posted?
Jesse
and what is the pink in the same photo. I looks a bit like hydrangea, but the blooms are so large and tall and the plant appears to be very small.
Hey, don't all talk at once! The purple and blue flowers growing the Chinese jar are just garden variety HD pansies. In the middle I don't remember... something that was supposed to be fragrant and turned out not very fragrant.
Carol, I will send this plant to you. I have totally ignored it all summer, and it is set to die from exposure in a week or two. If you decide to trash it - well at least it had a little fun.
xxxx, Carrie
Carrie,
Thank you... What is it called?
Carol
It is DOG GONE Coleus. Not too exciting to look at - none of the colorations we expect to find - but it has survived neglect and scorn. Are you in the exchange?
Carrie
Carrie,
Yes I am in the exchange, but I don't think a plant is going to help my situation. The bed is too big and so there is lots of room for her to destroy stuff without even getting near the plant no matter where I put it. I am hoping on the repellant but if that doesn't work I don't know what to do. She has dug in my rose bed some, and in my new perennial bed. We have had her for years and she never used to do that until this year when it got so hot. Last year the cat used the bulb bed for a litterbox. I haven't seen her do it this year though. I wonder if they cover this problem in the garden pest forum. My pets are pests. lol
I appreciate the offer though. Surely there is something that will work. We have put in too much time and money to let them be destroyed.
Thank you anyway,
Carol
oops - I just finished wrapping it up to send. Just try it. I've been fretting ever since I bought it. It got so bad this summer that I was going to put it on the sidewalk with a sign "FREE PLANT". It's worth it to my conscience to spend the postage to get it to a warmer climate.
Carol, is your real name Carolyn but people call you Carol? My real name is Carolyn too but I'm called Carrie. My grandmother was a Carolyn and my grandfather called her 'Carol'. My father never really figured it out that Carrie is not my real name!

YQ ~ I have heard of people using moth balls as a pet deterrent. I have a gardening canine ~ Podster ~ who likes to bed in convenient places. I started sticking tomato cages in spots where he laid to discourage him. Vining plants would climb them and cover. Across the front of the house, I have asian jasmine. It had finally covered well and he moved onto it. I laid tomato cages on their sides to deter him. The jasmine grew up thru the cages. I think he finally got the message. He beds under one of the trailers when he is outside. I will admit that when he dug, I planted a plant there and chastised him to leave it alone... My plant, NO, NO! Of course, he left it alone and moved over next to it to dig another hole. I guess that saved me the shovel work... That's ok at my age. : )) pod
My dog doesn't understand English. I didn't raise her, and she was abused as a puppy, so she is very shy. You can't hardly get onto her...

YQ ~ I understand about not raising them. Pod showed up at work as a year old stray ~ abused? From his behavior, more than likely. One front leg is shorter and with a bad limp. The vet says an old injury that healed wrong. He yelps and cringes at things that shouldn't scare him. But he is sweet and charming and that got him in the door. I do have standards tho and he will understand 'no' even if I need to learn another language. Like I said, that doesn't necessarily stop him, he just won't dig right there! Moves over and digs next to it... How can we get mad? : ] pod
