Frothy bubbles- job of insect?

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Sometimes I notice these things in my garden in the morning. Evening they are not there. Anybody has any idea about which insect might be doing this and for what purpose? I have not explored into touching it yet.

I would guess some type of spittlebug (seriously) -- couldn't find any great pics, but here are some: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spittlebug

Definately spittle bug. They're really gross, but if you accidently get some "spittle" on you, it won't hurt! We have them alot around here, and I don't think they're too destructive...if they were, I'd remember that! I believe the spittle is their defense mechanism. Wish I could sound more definative but its been a while since I checked 'em out.

Thanks. Such a little insect secreting so much? I had posted pic of a similar bug (as in link) before. Now I reckon it is the job of that. Still keep my fingers crossed. Glad that they are not destructive.

I had a lot of this on one of my shrubs. It looked awful but did not cause any damage. I was all ready to get out the chemicals, but waited and the shrub is thriving. I never did see any of the insects themselves.
