I find these on my echinaceas, although so far there are not a ton of them. Are they mealy bugs?
Another bug to ID-mealy bugs?
I can't see them well enough to tell. There are many homopterans that look like this or leave this type of evidence. They don't appear to be doing much yet - maybe a good blast of water or wiping them away might do the trick? Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your reply. I wish my camera would focus in better on close-ups. I'll have to put that on the wish list for our next camera.
I've tried to compare what I see to other pics of mealy bugs and other pests, but I just don't seem to have "the eye" for telling them apart. I think you're right though, given that there aren't all that many, it probably doesn't take much to get rid of them.
thanks again
Okay, something jumps off each fuzzy area like that when I spray. Mealy bugs don't jump. I'm starting to see them in a number of places, my shasta daisies, my echies, my rose of sharon....
For some reason this year seems to be a big pest and disease year for me. :(
It is probably a nymph of a plant hopper type homopteran. I suspect that it would either be in the Flattidae or Acanaloniidae family.
Sorry for the delay in replying. I think you've hit the nail on the head. I looked up some photos based on your comment and finally was able to ID a bug I could never get a good picture of. It's something like this: http://bugguide.net/node/view/67023
This bug always seems to be in the same vicinity as the stuff on my echinaceas. I've also seen it here and there throughout the garden although never in large numbers.
Thanks for your help.
