Crystals on stems

Does anyone know what insect (etc.) leaves a white crystalline substance on the stems of the reproductive flowers? Also, what would leave white, hanging mucus drainage from young tree stems. I can find the aftermath but never the culprit. Thanks, Karen aka liebran
