Ways to be cool

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

It is sooooo hot in Texas, so I wear a dog collar. Yes, you might think this is dorky....and it is. It's one of those 'cooling bandanas', you put it in water for 30 minutes and then the refrigerator for about 15. It really works. Ms. Lobo has one just like it.

I forgot to mention it goes around your neck

Whew! I need one of those today. Outside mowing the lawn and it's hot hot! That's a very good idea. I've got to buy one of those.

Snazzy!

I have one of those, but I never thought to put it in the refrigerator.

They are fantastic. We bought them to use when we went to Disney world. They work great and really keep you cooler. I use mine when I am out in the garden.

I tie one around my forehead - to catch the sweat before it gets to my eyes, and one around my neck - for cooling. They really do work. Amazing..... Well, that and a jump in the pool when the body temp goes over 110 degrees.

is threre something speciall about the fabric? wonder if I could treat a regular bandana in the same manner--wet it then freeze it for a bit. I have seen these in catalogs.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Vossner, the material seems like cotton, but there's some pebbly things inside that hold the water and keep it cool longer.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Years ago, we found that cold wet bandanas wrapped around the neck or the wrists would seem to bring the body temp down. A nurse said it was because the blood flowed close to the surface and the bandanas cooled the blood hence cooled the body. Don't know but it feels great.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Yeah, those little pebbly things absorb water (you soak them first) and swell up. It's an evaporation mechanism that keeps you cooler. I don't freeze mine.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

there must be something about your neck being protected from the elements. When temps are cold, it seems I can tolerate it better when my neck is wrapped up. Looks like I could tolerate heat better is ny neck was cool, as well. Is there a particular brand you recommend?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

I mostly go by what they have at Petsmart and of course the style.....you have to be stylin if you're wearing a dog collar ;)

Podster, you have to get Pod one to match!

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Works for me...
as long as I don't have to take a dip in the pond too.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, I sure could have used one of those yesterday. And where does one find such a creation?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

I found mine at Petsmart, you should get one.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Well, I'm at Petmsart almost as often as I'm at the nurseries. I'll pick one up tomorrow!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

I've seen them at a few nurseries too.

For you sewers, you can go to Michael's and they have pkgs. (dry ice) used in plants..pkgs. cost approx $7.98 and you can get 2 bandana's out of it...any cotton material will work....I cut mine in 45" lengths with a width of about 6"...I make sew making a tub--iron it so that the seam is not to the side but mid point of the tube. At one end I sew approx. 6" on an angle and cut off excess material..now I turn it inside out...I am now looking at the good side of the material...at about 6 to 8" up from corner I made on angle I sew across the tube 2 or 3 times...you now see an open tube that you can put approx. 2 to 3 tsp. of dry ice...making sure the ice is in the lower part of the tube I then sew the same length across to secure the dry ice in it's section- what I now have left is approx 6" left that I turn in to form the angle to match my first angle---iron in seam allowance and sew to secure...works well and make nice gifts.... hope this helps someone

Good idea Betty, so those pebbly things are dry ice. Thanks for the info, they have such cute material out, I may just have to sew one or two up.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm on my way to Petsmart! I'll buy one for my and my dog.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Fly - I don't think she meant they are real dry ice. Dry ice evaporates. And you couldn't put that against your skin - even with a cloth buffer. I think maybe that is just a product name for those pebbles that you can use in pots that absorb and hold moisture. I'm amazed at how much moisture these pebbles hold! The scarf is the shape of a good sized sausage when they have absorbed the water. You just let it dry out between uses - I hang it on one of the knobs in my laundry room. Then, when I need it, I throw it in a sink of water about for about 20 minutes and it's all ready again.

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I've made them, too. It's those moisture pellets and I found them at Lowe's. Do NOT put a lot in it! About a tablespoon or so will fill that tube up really fat fat fat.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Very good point, Brigid!!

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Just didn't want any explosions out there. :}

I went out and bought one of these yesterday. I couldn't find any at Petco, but PetSmart had them and they look a bit different than the one flygirl has. It was called Outback Hound. I had it in a bowl of water in the frig overnight. It's almost 100 here today and I was able to go out and deadhead for the last 2 hours or so before I called it quits; most of that time in direct sun. I was also wearing my big floppy sunhat.

I would say this works. Some friends drove by on their way to Bingo and had to stop just to ask me if I was nuts. I think everyone should still be very careful in this kind of heat, but if there are things you need to get done, this will buy you a little time.

Columbia Heights, MN(Zone 4a)

BTW, I bought one for the dog too, but he only lasted a half hour before he wanted back inside...wimp

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Just so ya'll know. They do make these for people.

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

It was 107 here today. I finally gave up and turned on the central air! I found my cooling bandana. Now I just have to remember where I put it. Yes, it has "cooled" down to 96 degrees, but I still need all the help I can get.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Scoolie, where do you find these for people?

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Several places on the internet have them. Do a search for cooling bandanas. They are different than the ones for pets. Much longer so as not to feel like it's choking you. Locally you could try maybe Sports Authority or Academy. Not sure if they carry them or not but worth a try.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Scoolie, I found a cooling visor cap that I want. It has the polymers in the band.

CJ, I know they're not dry ice......duh ;)

Aurora, CO(Zone 5a)

Ebay has them. Or try a search for cooling crystals, cooling bandana, MiraCool.

You'd think outdoor or sports shops would have them, but I couldn't find them there.
