San Antonio area Plant Swap

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

I figured on maybe doing a cook out kind of thing... I have a grill that works nice. But we could also do the rudy's thing. What ever people want. and yes.. should be enough time... if we figure it out ...

So where is GD's place. and when? or has it already happened?

I have a package of name tag thingies.

actually right now I have about 1 of everything in the world..(except major appliences and furniture since that has already gone). My parents consolidated and moved... I have my Great Aunts estate stuff, my brothers estate stuff, Both Granparents estate stuff and stuff my parents didn't move to the new house. I'm systematlicly going through boxes and seperating into "give to humane society thrift store", "give to free cycle", "put on craigslist", "put on ebay", "give to friends", and "put in future presents box". *giggle

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lolol...I'm just kidding about GD..! He teases me relentlessly about giving me more rocks and sticker burrs...so I have to hand him a "grin on a dinner plate" every now and then... ;)

Yes, I know what you mean about all of the boxes and boxes of thingamajiggs that seem to propagate around the house, lol.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Well he can keep his sticker burrs... I have PLENTY of them.... but I LOVE rocks! *giggle

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol...I love rocks too....but a blue million of em' laying under my pallets havin' a siesta is a bit detrimental to my gardening habits! :D

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Ahh cool . . . thanks for the links Linda :) I'll have to check those out and see if there's anything I can do to lend a hand?

lol TxT . . . always try'n to get me in trouble. Ya know what that mistletoe is good for and ya still want me to take it? :O That's too funny @ sticky weeds . . . I was just try'n to explain those to someone the other day . . . And how we used to play like they were spears when we were kids and have all sorts of wars with them . . . they looked at me like I was nutz too (wonder why?)

Nada . . . either of those dates are fine by me and I'd lean more towards Saturday and Oct. but I could likely do any of the above.

And since TxT is buy'n . . . Rudy's sounds good to me too . . . lol

Actually, I do have plenty of room for everyone out here at my place and a couple of large pits and bbq tables, but I'm a pretty long way from everyone. I live on the opposite end of SA from Boerne. I'm out south east of town past 1604 headed towards Corpus, so we may wanna meet for lunch somewhere a little closer to / or at your house . . . lol

Maybe we can do the next one out here - if people don't mind drive'n out this way and if the gas prices aren't $25 a gallon by then?

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

There is also always car pooling. Leon Springs is a good place for people heading north to save about 20 miles of gas (for me it's about $2.00) so someone could save about $4.00 by car pooling. Same could go for GD if we do something there and carpool a couple of places around SA. I know I've carpooled with friends before going downtown and we left our extra cars at Cross Roads Mall (Does anyone else always have to think about that name since it was called Wonderland Mall for so long?)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Nada, you mentioned having trouble with deer eating your plants.
Here is a list of deer resistant plants that I thoutght might help you.

Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Good idea Nada . . . and yeah . . . since I was born and raise around here . . . I still call it Wonderland Mall lol

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks frostweed. Yes I have that one printed out. I have just about everything I have been able to find about plants that deer might not gobble. I've done pretty well so far, People around me are suprised that I have as much color as I do since most people just completely give up with the deer around.

I haven't tried any of the deer off products yet because I wanted to first try just plants they wouldn't bother too much. Then I figured if there was something I really wanted in my landscape I could try surounding it with ones they didn't like and/or put it somewhere they didn't go.

I acutally have one place they don't like walking since it is low with buildings on both sides. It suprised me. They left my lettuce completely alone this year.

But in the spring my daffidels (sp) didn't ever bloom cuz they kept eating the tops off!

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lolol @ Rudy's....well, how about if I AND GD just sort of help folks with the cost of power steering fluid as they make their way to Beorne...lol and to each person who'll be attending, don't forget to bring a rock from home for GD's collection since I know that he's too shy to tell every one that he loves allll sorts of Texas boulders... lol.

I've got few photos of plants that I have but I don't know the true names of them. I would go to the ID thingy....but since I'd be bringing some possible cuttings from these same plants...perhaps someone could tell me what they are...and if ya'll want any.... :)

I believe this is a woolly butterfly bush...and a cutting seems to be doing ok that I accidently broke off and stuck in the gound...

Is this a globe mallow? This cutting also seems to be doing ok...It is another favorite out in the rock garden.. :)

And I believe this is a rock rose.....has anyone tried to get some cuttings going from it?

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

yes that is a rock rose. and you know "I" haven't tried since I haven't tried cuttings yet *g

nada

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Hmm...we should give it a whirl then, Nada...its a beautiful plant..don't cha think? :)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I love the Wooly Butterfly bush and I din't have any, could you do one for me, Please?
The second plant doesn't look like Globe Mallow, but I don't know what it is.
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Alright frostweed, I have ya down for a fairy duster and a woolly butterfly bush... :)

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

yep.. need to start somewhere... I am going to take cuttings this weekend and see how it goes.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Does anyone want some miniture nandina? I was reading up on being wildscape and being native plants certified and they don't like it... So... since it isn't intrigual to my garden I'm gonna dig it up. They are nice little plants... have been in the ground for 3-4 years. Never had a problem with them. I think I have 3, but will have to go out tomorrow and count.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Nada, what would it take to get a small live oak and pecan youngling from ya? I'd love to get a live oak goin' in my wee backyard...but they cost so darn much. And tho pecans grow soooo slowly...I'd love to have one.. :)

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

I know I have oaks growning (those tree rats plant them too!) but I'm not sure which is which since I don't think there are any over a 6-12" tall (unless they are in the back 40 (which is actually a little less than an acre)). I can look around and see if I can find what a baby live oak looks like...

The pecans and oaks are growing everywhere. I have just about every size known to man. I even have one that is 12 FEET tall but only 1" around (sits at the bottom of the washer water line!)

All ya have to do is ask! Would rather YOU dig them but if you can't I can. And you really don't have to wait until the RU. I don't mind you coming out one night or weekend .... have shovel will travel? *g

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol Nada....I wasn't going to ask YOU to dig up a tree....lol, I'll just bring my ole sharp shooter to the RU and go traipsing around your property for the right tree...lol. It'd definitely have to be a small one..since its so hard to dig ANYTHING up in this clay/rock soil. I'd love to be able to dig up a large tree...but to dig a large hole in my backyard in that hard ground just sends me into fits and willies...lol.. I honestly don't know what to do to get the right size hole for a large tree. A post hole digger would be a wasted effort...and the clay! I could do a Demi Moore pose with a potter's wheel with what I dig up around here...lol ;)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Yeah...most of the wild oaks around these parts are live oaks...so they're real plentiful...and probably growing all around your house.. :)

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

PICK AXE - my tool of the week! Will cut through clay, dirt, rock, and feet if you aren't carefull!

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

the first year I moved out here I got the wrong kind of corn for those tree rats and had corn stalks growing up in the weirdest places! *giggle

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

TxTurqoize, I have a potted pecan seedling that I can bring for you, that way you only have to dig the hole in your yard, and there won't be any transplant shock to the tree.
I find that when you plant the smaller trees, there is a better chance of success.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol @ ya'll . . . well I've got some little Live Oaks out here in the sand that would be pretty easy to dig out . . . but as you say . . . getting the hole to put them into would be another story. hmmmm . . . maybe you could put it in the hole that my big rock is come'n out of? lol

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Actually the pecans and oaks that I know of are gonna be pretty easy to get out. You have to remember that tree rats planted them. They mostly planted them in/near my garden. I have two in POTS already since that is where they buried them. *giggle. 3 of the pecans are right between the garden wall and the driveway. (I'm at Moms or I would post a pic to show you). I know there are more in the back 40 but it is nice and loamy down there... plus by oct if we have rains it will be soft soft soft.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol...(taking note of LARGE hole)...Now that's a possibility..... I'll take any oak trees (wee younglings) that anyone wants to take off of their hands...well...1 or 2 at the most, lol.

Ohhh...that would be wonderful...frostweed. I'll probably be around 95 years of age by the time that it produces...but I'd love to have one anyway...lol

The weather will be great in October as well for transplantin' young trees...since the worst of the heat will be over.. :)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I must tell you the I have two beautiful Pecan trees that the squirrels planted for me.
One is 25 years old and has been producing for a few years now, the other is 20 and starting to produce, they are native pecans, so the nuts are small, but oh so tasty!
It is wonderful to watch a tree grow and bear fruit.

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Mine should be native since the nuts came from my dad's place and the trees there were native. The oldest I have at my place is about 3 years old so I have a while to wait to get anything off of it.

The others in the front yard are less than a year old (they came up this year) and most of the ones in the back 40 are 5 or less years old.

My parents moved so now I have to buy the things instead of pick them up.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

WOW, gone for a few days and ya'll have been busy chatting. I don't have alot of time while on break to be adding to the conversation, but wanted to add.. I raise my hand for the Oct.14-15 date time frame. I will be in wyoming from sept 22 till oct.1.

Also, thanks to frostweed I now have 4 texas stars growing. Frostweed I think I already thanked you, but just in case I didn't, THANK YOU............ The seeds you sent me I planted about 7 of them and 4 have sprouted. Still waiting for the others if they decide to grow. I now am a proud owner of Frostweeds offspring children(hehehehehehe). Adoption that is! No offense intended, frostweed. they are about 5 inches high now and have set their third set of true leaves. Slow growing but growing.

got to go back to work,

calvin

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Calvin, thank you for taking good care of them. Actually it that is a pretty good growth rate. I hope the others germinate too.
Josephine.
