San Antonio area Plant Swap

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Would love to meet ya too...frostweed. You sound like an incredibly knowlegeable gardener...and certainly an asset to us folks who just enjoy our wee plants and flowers... :) Would love to meet all of the other folks whose names I am becoming familiar with... :)

Yeah, Teresa...t'would be fun...wouldn't it? :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Rocks are good . . . maybe I'll bring a few of those to the swap, since I seem to be able to grow them better than plants . . . lol

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, TexTurqoize, thank you for your compliment, but I am just an amateur who is crazy about Texas native plants and loves to experiment.
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lolol GD..now there's an idea...! *loadin' up garden bag with rocks*

I know how ya feel, frostweed. It seems that all of the plants and flowers that I use to see on the roadside travelin' around Texas are now in nurserys here. I always loved natives the best...and I think they are finally getting their share of attention. Especially during these hotter and dryer days. :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Umm...any more news on a possible RU or Swaparoo..lol ?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

WOW...
either I am blind or not paying attention. when I first signed on DG I was looking for SA DGers and cold not find any, now there seems to be alot. Great! I would love to meet and greet and if I have plants trade and/or share. I will be waiting for other's responses and possible datesand times. I go out of town end of Sept. till beginning of Oct. and start school in Aug. commute to san marcos twice weekly and work the gravyard shift...... very little time but wanting to meet DGer's.

calvin

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Gosh Calvin, with that schedule when do you find time to garden???? Plus if I recall correctly you have a wife and children (read that on the Austin nursery tour thread I believe unless I'm getting you confused with someone else). Would have liked to join you guys for that cause I'm a teacher and off for the summer, but I really hate Austin as far as traffic and such, plus the timing wasn't good for me. Hoping maybe SA will be a possibility. Joined DG in April I think and have sure enjoyed the site. Meeting my first DG'ers next weekend when hubbie, son, & I visit family in Houston. Decided I might as well add a little bit of gardening fun into the weekend and the cousins we're visiting didn't seem to mind.

Patty

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Patty,

you have me as the right person. I have a DW and two kids in the photo of the Austin tour on the 8th my family is on the left. I am very busy, sometimes it feels that I don't have anytime. I have to make time mostly. If you keep reading on in the same thread, you can see that my family is short in sharing the excitement I have for gardening. That is okay most of the time with me. I wish they would take more of an interest but I would hate to force them to do what I enjoy. I hand water so when I get home after work about0630 am I water. Go to bed and when I wake up look out the window at my garden, dream about what I want it to look like and delight in what is growing there. I then start getting ready for the day's events. in the evening before I go to work, I walk around in the back yard and enjoy the moonvines that are starting to take bloom and then leave for the night shift.

When I start school in August, I really don't know where the time is going to be available for me to garden. I am majoring in Horticulture so I guess most of my gardening will be greenhouse stuff for school projects. I am only about 1/4 the way through with my backyard, so during the breaks from school is when I will get to work on it. The way I look at it I am only going to have enough time to water and enjoy what is growing, won't be able to really get my hands dirty in the soil and new plants. BUT that usually has never stopped me from doing the things I want to do even if it calls for 1 hour or 2 of lost sleep. Nobody is going to keep me from my gardens and plants.........LOL

long winded so I end here

calvin

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

That is the spirit Calvin, keep up your good attitude.
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol nivlac...ya sound like a gardener after my own heart... :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol TxT . . . you just want the extra rocks he digs up when he has time to plant some new stuff . . . lol

Yeah . . . . What Frostweed said . . . keep the positive attitude . . . where there's a will there's a way :)

So no news on setting a date yet? I'm hope'n we'll have at least a couple of weeks notice to make arrangements and get any cuttings that may be wanted for trade ready to go :D

Keep us posted :)

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Calvin,

Am I right to recall you were new to SA and had many plans for your yard then? Now you are half done! Way to go!!! Can you post pics of the new changes?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol GD....naw....at this point, if I find some more rock...I'm droppin' em off at your house...just pilin' em real nice-like around your knot garden...lol. If ya see a flashy light goin' off in the middle of the night near the garden...just ignore it.....it'll be lots of lightening bugs....yeah, lightening bugs...lol ;p And if a neighbor tells ya that he saw a red pickup hi-tailin' it out of your driveway in the next couple of nights....well....it was all a "pigment" of their imagination.. ;)

Still waitin' to hear some news....LOTS of area folks seem interested..

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Tir_na_nog..... new to the home ownership. about 2 years now. First time being able to garden on my own space. And yes I had lots of plants and no garden area just awful lawn. I have embarked on a journey to get rid of the lawn and landscape the backyard. Still a work in progress, slow, tedious, and about 1/4 the way through. I wish I was half way.................

Family is going out of town for 2 weeks and I will be home alone for all the toil and trouble I can get into. hopefully and plan to get to the halfway mark before They all come home...

WISH me luck

calvin

p.s.---- ANy suggestions for the get to gether? Lets start with month selection first, I start school in late August and am out of town August 1-5 and agian out of town late Sept. I suggest either early Sept. or the month of Oct. It will be alot cooler in Sept and Oct.

calvin

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Calvin,

No more lawn huh?! I must admit I do love a green lawn...but someone posted this in another Texas forum recently and thought it fitting since you mention it:

Quoting:
YARD WORK - AS VIEWED FROM HEAVEN
(overheard in a conversation between God and St. Francis):

God: Francis, you know all about gardens and nature; what in the world is going on down there in the U.S.? What happened to the dandelions, violets, thistles and the stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought, and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long-lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honeybees, and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of color by now. All I see are patches of green.

St. Francis: It's the tribes that settled there, Lord. They are called the Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers "weeds" and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass.

God: Grass? But it is so boring, it's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, bees or birds, only grubs and sod worms. It's temperamental with temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want grass growing there?

St. Francis: Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it has grown a little, they cut it.... sometimes two times a week.

God: They cut it? Do they bale it like hay?

St. Francis: Not exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it inbags.

God: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it?

St. Francis: No sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away.

God: Now let me get this straight...they fertilize it to make it grow and when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?

St. Francis: Yes, sir.

God: These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work.

St. Francis: You aren't going to believe this Lord, but when the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.

God: What nonsense! At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep the moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. Plus, as they rot, the leaves become compost to enhance the soil. It's a natural circle of life.

St. Francis: You'd better sit down, Lord. As soon as the leaves fall, the Suburbanites rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.

God: No way! What do they do to protect the shrubs and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose?

St Francis: After throwing the leaves away, they go out and buy something called mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.

God: And where do they get this mulch?

St. Francis: They cut down the trees and grind them up to make mulch.

God: Enough! I don't want to think about this anymore. Saint Catherine, you're in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?

St. Catherine: "Dumb and Dumber," Lord. It's a really stupid movie about....

God: Never mind--I think I just heard the whole story from Saint Francis!

Great suggestion Calvin on everyone selecting a month that'd be best. I'd vote for the cooler weather of Sept/Oct myself.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

I love this story. I think I would like the okay to print it out for a hard copy. ANy idea who has the rights to it so I can ask for permission.?

calvin

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Calvin:

It came from this thread: http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/620628/#new and was posted by a jackieshar. You might be able to find out from more there.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Calvin that story has been around for a long time, I think it would be very hard to find out, but maybe she knows, or can find out.
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

lol @ lightening bugs . . . hmmmmm ok TxT . . . I was wonder'n where all those rocks were come'n from. I thought it was a bit soon for the ones I planted around my knot garden to be have'n babies already :D

As far as "month selection" . . . cooler may be better, but that's a long ways away . . . does everyone want to wait till January? lol jus fun'n ;)
When ever is best for those that have to travel the furthest may be the thing consider. I'm don't have to travel too far myself, so when ever is best for everyone else is fine by me. :)

We might want to start with a "head count" of who all is wanting to attend that is not in the immediate SA area and go from there? Then pick a date and let people work their schedules around that?

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Hey Calvin--I too have a hubbie and teenager who could care less about gardening. Hubbie helps if something requires more muscle than I can manage, but he does it out of love for me not love for gardening. Aren't we lucky to have found DG where we ramble on about out gardening passion.

I live near Corpus Christi, and I would say Sept or even October sounds good (gives us some time to get things growing for trading purposes) and I like the sound of cooler weather too, but because things get crazy once school starts, I don't like to have much say in what date is chosen cause it may be hard for me to attend. I'd rather those who are in SA just set the date and if I can make it, I will.

Patty

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Well, I'm sort of with Calvin on the October date...my work slows down just a bit...and we're probably heading off to Tuscon on a road trip in late September for a week. October is a wonderful time here in Texas...and plants are perkier too...lol.. But honestly, with just a two week notice...anytime is fine with me too.. :)

Good idea on the head count, GD. It seems as tho quite a few people outside of the area are interested in attending...which I think is absolutely so neat..lol

I know how ya feel on the new home = new yard idea...calvin. I lived in apartments for quite a few years in Boston and then moved back down here about 4 years ago. We finally closed on our house about two years ago...and lo and behold, there was a square blank canvas of a back and frontyard. I've ALSO managed to landscape (by hand, no less!) about a 1/4 th of the backyard...and would love to do about 75% of the whole thing. I've got nothing but natives growing...and sloooowly expanding the beds as time and work allow. As for all of the rocks that I keep loanin' GD, lol...there never ceases to be a HUGE number of em' lying fallow beneath the bermuda pallets...lol...But the critters are starting to move in....so I must be doing something right... :) :)

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

TxT..... seems you and I are inthe same boat. moved to SA area in later 2000 yr. and in my home in late summer 2004. Only I conned the builder into sodding the entire front and back...... thought I was "picking in high cotton" then. Later when the dreams of plants hit hard I realize wht a waste of space. the story above says it all for me. A work in progress..... it never ends cause just when you get evrything in you start moving the plants around looking to get your own personal EDEN (garden of... that is)

count me in for the head count

thats: 1 any others?

calvin

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

lol calvin,
It was part of the plan from our builders that the front and back would be sodded with Bermuda pallets...which was fine with me...lol...and even got two youngling live oaks planted in the front yard. I wish to all get out that when I sat on my back porch and looked over all of the pallets, I had actually started my projects right then and there...

Pulling up new pallets would have been a whole lot easier to pull up back then, then what I'm trying to move around NOW. So I'm still sitting on my back porch, looking over my tiny estate, lol. I've gotten quite a bit accomplished...and almost sent myself to the hospital in the interim period..lol. But I'm determined to keep going, despite those DEEP roots of the Bermuda, the rocks and rocks, and more rocks..and clay/soil so darn hard...its like stickin' a shovel in my dadburn driveway... ;)

San Antonio, TX

Hello everyone. I have been busy and not been onthe internet very much. Just found this link and yippee there are more of us out there. I am in San Antonio and would love to be part of this group. Count me in.

Ok now that we've got some serious local interest in the get together . . . what's the standard format for deciding what to bring for trade'n purposes?

Does everyone need to make a list of that they think they will have ready to bring (and post it here). . . then wait for others to say - hey I want 2 of that one and 1 of that . . . etc. . . . or how is this normally done at these RUs?

Just curious :)

Wimberley, TX(Zone 8a)

Me too!

Thanks Frostweed :) That's very helpful . . . I guess we all need to get busy and get our lists started :D

Boerne new zone 30, TX(Zone 8b)

Sorry I've been sick so not around to answer questions. I ate something that was bad on July 2 and have been having problems off and on since then. This last monday it got worse and stayed in bed wed-sun on liquid diet and pills.

Anyway. enough about me *giggle...

I was thinking late august or first to middle oct. Let me look at the calendar this week and I will put out 2-3 dates and we can see when the most people are interested in. How about that?

One question? Do all the plants have to be in pots? *giggle I have volenteer plants all over that people can dig up to their hearts content, but if I need to dig them up and put them in planters myself let me know so I can work on that.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Sorry to hear that you were under the weather, but glad you're getting back to normal :)

lol @ Do all the plants have to be in pots? . . . not for me they don't . . . just call me have_shovel_will_travel :D oh wait . . . I almost forgot you're up there in them rocks :O . . . we may have to change that to have_dynamite_will_blast . . . lol

btw - Those date time frames are fine by me :)

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

I am sorry you have been sick, I had wondered why you hand'nt daid anything.
Bless your heart, I hope you get well soon
Josephine.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Glad you're feeling better, renatelynne

If someone needs pots I have LOADS of them. Probably close to 100 of different sizes. (I have kept 1/2 of the ones from plants I have bought just in case I ever got the notion to propergate like crazy!) *giggle. I work in SA so we might could meet somewhere to exchange if someone needs.

Yes I'm feeling lots better. It is amazing what bad food can do to a body!

I was also figuring doing on a Sat but if we need to chose another day let me know.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

will not have much, if anything at all, to trade but really looking forward to placing names with faces and making new friends.

calvin

if I do end up with a trade or two then I will post or just bring them along.

I am looking for morning glories, though. My moonvines are doing great and bloom and smell wonderfull at night, I would like to add that in the day time.

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Renatelynne, so sorry you had such a bad time with the food and all. I've been there and done that a few times. Not fun at all! GD, LOL! I thought I was the have_shovel_will_travel person around here. I carry a camp shovel in the truck, ya know! Actually, I've been trying to rescue some native milkweeds near my subdivision because they developing (developing must equal mowing down all the plants) near here. I haven't gotten very many of them out of there yet because it's soooo hot and dry. Digging in the hill country is not easy.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Linda,

I can relate to the digging. north/northeast San Anton sits pretty much in the begining of the hill country (I know, I'm saying what every here already knows) if you are traveling east coast to west coast. I dig about 3 inches into my yard and then out comes the pick axe. Back bracking and exhausting.

calvin

oh and renatelynne I wanted to say thank you for starting this thread and it is good you are feeling better.
