I have the room and the willingness to start a San Antonio area plant swap and meet & greet. (In other words if you don't have a plant to swap but still want to come out you are welcome). Haven't got a date yet since I would like to hear if there is a reponse from people. I will post a couple of pics of my place in the next couple of days. I have loads of stuff that others might like. I have volunteer pecan trees, fennel, horse tail and maximillan sunflowers just to name a few. I don't use pesticides and try to only feed with natural sources. Over 1/2 my plants are texas natives, but I do plant a few others for either color or because deer do not seem to like them.
I live outside Boerne which is north on east I10 about 19 miles north of 1604.
Use this tread to discuss what we might do or want to do.
San Antonio area Plant Swap
Well, I see you didn't waste any time! I wish I could come too, I love native plants.
Josephine.
Isn't Arlington near Dallas? I come up to Dallas a few times a year.
In that case you will have to stop by and visit.
Maybe you could come to our Dallas Plant swap, Saturday October 7th, there will be a lot of people attending, some from the Houston area.

I don't really have any plants to swap, but I'll come if I'm not working. I'll watch for dates/times :-)
Sounds like fun to me, and it seems I've always got extras I'd love to share. I'm a Blanco County Master Gardener (so I'm not too far) and we meet next Tuesday. I'll mention this plant swap and let you know what kind of feedback I get. I'll keep you posted (ar,ar).
Debbie
Great! Sounds like a good idea. I could come up with some plants to bring!
Sounds good to me and I can afford the gas to get there. :o)
Sounds like a plan in the works . . . I've got a few 'pups' in the early stages of take'n root. Depending on the time and such, I'd likely have some things to bring and share with others. Plus I've got a decent digi-cam to 'document' the day ;)
Frostweed!!!! October 8th is on a Sunday...October 7th is Saturday...just wanted to let ya'll know about the wrong date posted aboved..
I am very sorry, I don't know what i was thinking. Thank you for pointing it out.
I have edited my post to the correct date October 7th.
Josephine.
Well, if ya'll are willing and able...I could try to find some time around a busy work schedule. :) It'd be fun...and like htop said...cheap on the gas! lol...just right down IH 10 from me. (I live outside Loop 1604 near Helotes) 'Sides, I owe GD some Texas Bird of Paradise seeds...lol ;)
I can round up some white Orchid Tree seeds, Pride of Barbados seeds...and hmm...some Bat Face cuttings, etc..... Sounds interestin'!

Hey . . . who's DG? and what about me? :P . o O ( must be that heat again?) lol
Ok . . . I'll see if I can get these Mexican BOP seeds sprouted by the time of the swap meet, if not I can bring seeds and some various other cuttings I'm attempting to get started over here . . . oh and don't forget about my "owiee" plant . . . If it can grow in my concrete slab, (see thread & pics here http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/620044/ ) it'll take root about anywhere :D
lol...GD..DG....BG. CBGB...yikes....where did my ice tea go?
There...all fixed.. ;)
oh yeah right . . . so now she's make'n me look like the one that's 'lost it' around here :p . o O(am I sure I want any seeds from this woman?) lol
*(lookin' affronted)* Now listen here...I told ya I get my d's and b's mixed up...that may go for my seeds as well. ;) I could accidently bring you some itty bitty bits of black pepper...and tell you that they are strawberry seeds..lol But I wouldn't dare...just keep me filled with ice tea...I'll be alright.. lol
lol ok . . . you do that and I'll bring you some seeds from my seedless watermellons :p
This may turn out to be a fun swap meet . . . anyone thought of a date yet? I just took about a dozen cuttings tonight, so I hope they have time to take root before the RU :)
lol @ the melon seeds...
No one has mentioned a date yet....but I'll keep myself tuned in for further details.. ;)
I think that is a great idea. I am in San Antonio and would love to meet other gardeners from this area.
renatelynne:
That sounds like a great idea! I have some katie mexican petunias to dig up and divide
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/38186/ and also a spider plant (I've had that indoors). I felt so bad thinking I'd have to just divide them and toss the excess but I don't know ANY gardeners in person!!!! If not for this year it'd be something I could do for future swaps once I become SAHM.
GD: that's for stay-at-home-mom. =) Someone has to watch the cats. LOL.
Tir_Na_Nog, you truly don't know any gardeners? Well, we all HAVE to get together then! BTW, I'm a SAHW...I take care of my disabled husband....and the cats too!
hmmm now that makes me wanna stay at home and paint so I can be a SAHP :D
renatelynne, Any progress on a date yet? I've got my MG meeting in Johnson City this Tuesday night (11th) and I'd like to mention this plant swap there. Boerne isn't really that far from here, although nothing is close to me here!...Thank God I love drives in the beautiful hill country because everyday is a road trip!! I think this swap is a wonderful idea and I'd love to meet more fellow gardeners...who knows, I may know some of you already! I spent most of my life in San Antonio. Please keep us posted, and please don't change your mind!!:))
Linda & GD, you are both so funny! Love it! I've been the SAHW before but I didn't have any cats then to tend. Or PLANTS! Can you believe it! So glad to be out of apartment living...but I'd love to live in the countryside of Boerne myself! If you are still keen to have a swap I think it'd be swell.....be nice to MEET gardeners =) but I don't have much to share just yet.
Well goodness...I'm feeling all woeful because I just realized I don't know any gardeners either, lol. And here I was going to subscribe to Texas Gardening Magazine. But this is much better... :) Certainly more sillier, I reckon..lol
dogmansis....isn't the Hill Country just heaven on earth? :):) Nothin' like a leisurely drive around the hills.
SAHW ? Now I want to watch something too...*lookin' around for somethin' to watch*
no date yet. got an interesting though on another thread and am going to see if anything is going on with nature center that we can tag on along with the plant swap. Still waiting on answer from them.
Sounds interesting...renatelynne
Any more news to tell? We're awaitin' with abated breath..lol
Nature center AND plant swap...too good to be true! Just a little FYI...don't expect anything from me in big pots. I'm a firm believer in the smaller the pot, the smaller the hole!...makes it easier to plant in the rocks around here!
I TOTALY agree. *giggle I always ask when I get plants if they have a smaller size available.
lol renatelynne and dogmansis....I know what cha mean.....its just too much of an effort to try to dig a good size hole around here for a good size plant. I can manage to dig down about 2 inches...then it stops at clay and limestone...lol Sort of like diggin' on my driveway... :)
I know what you mean...plenty of caliche and rock here. Raised beds work well. People probably think I'm nuts, but I bring home MORE rocks to put around some of the raised beds!
Well, LindaTX8, I think you're nuts!...smile...but I've got LOTS of rocks if you want more. Wouldn't hurt me one bit to part with "some" (as many as you want!) if you want directions to my house........
Linda...lolol..I know wha cha mean...I complain about all of the rocks in my clay soil...and what do I do...? I take my honey's pickup...put a blanket down...and go looking for more rock! He just sort of shakes his head and looks puzzled, when not more then 2 days before...I was chucking dug-up rocks over the fence into the crispy cow pasture. I guess that limestone, which is all white and clean is just alot more "purtier" then ole brown rocks under the soil...lol :D
Yeah, I've got this weird hankering for certain kinds of rocks in my yard. Not just any rocks (LOL)! I'll see rocks on the roadside or somewhere and just take them home if I like them and if it's somewhere where nobody would mind. I went through a honeycomb rock phase once, so I have some of those. I'll see a rock with shells in it and I like those. Don't ask me why. I shake my head at myself sometimes and tell myself I don't need more rocks, but then I'll be making a raised bed and I just want more large rocks around it and smaller ones scattered here and there. I also like pieces of driftwood or cedar roots that look like driftwood. Go figure!
lol...yep...done that and been there.... :) I've picked up rocks ever since I was old enough to have pockets to put them in....lol I've got hundreds of em'. Some have a special place in my heart...and when anyone that I know goes overseas...or travels, I ask them to bring me a rock.. :) The funny thing is...I know the story behind every rock that I have. I bring rocks back to people that I know...and rocks back to people who are extra special. :)
If I find a heart shaped rock...well...now thats just extra extra special.. :)
You girls are really sentimental, and I like that very much. As a matter of fact, if the date you choose for your swap works out with all the other swap dates, I might just have to come and meet the San Antonio group.
I have been wanting to meet Htop in person for a long time, and everyone down there as well, you all are a lot of fun. I hope it all works out.
Please remember that our Dallas swap is October 7th.
Josephine.
I'd love to come to a plant swap! I'll have to brave the heat and see what I can divide. I'll keep checking back for a date. Great idea. I live in San Antonio so this is perfect.
