Any runners out there???

Lilburn, GA

Hi!

I am a runner and do ultrarunning as well. Are there any runners at DG?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Walker here and not too speedy. I admire runners but whew too hot for that!

Lilburn, GA

Hi Pod!

So, you are a walker... GREAT! Do you do it everyday?

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

Due to a back injury I only walk now. I go about 6 days a week and average five miles daily. I'd do more but I'm lacking the time and my poor ole' walking partner (my dog) can't take the heat. I've taken to getting up at 5:30 a.m. so he doesn't get over heated.

That is great datdog!

Spider,

What exactly is ultrarunning?? Extra long distances? Difficult terrain? Getting away from the spouse?! I run regularly on a treadmill. Hard surfaces too much for my back and knee.

Hi Victor,

It is running/racing on distances greater than a marathon (26 miles). Last june i did a race that involved running on a 400yards track for 8 hours, without stopping. It was held from 9pm until 5am.

I also run on a treadmill as the weather here is too hot to do it outside. My record on a tready is 3h 30 minutes without stopping.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow. And I thought marathoners were crazy! That's a lot of abuse on your body. Be prepared for lots of aches, pains, arthritis, joint replacements, etc., as the years pass. I played on concrete all the time as a kid. Was a complete sports fanatic. My right knee is a complete mess now - will certainly require surgery one day soon. Also have lots of lower back problems, including a herniated disc. Hope you fare better. Good luck!

Hi Victor,

I have chronic inflammation of my achilles tendon, on both legs.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

No longer young and foolish here. I walk daily with two canine companions who won't let me sit. The only time we miss is serious thunder lightening flooding. I have never been able to run but insist on staying active and flexible. Your skill is admirable Spider.

Lilburn, GA

Pod, it is not skill, just I am a hard head.

Medford, NJ(Zone 6b)

And I complain about lack of time to be able to walk. LOL Spider that is really something! I couldn't imagine running for 8 hours straight what a accomplishment. I bet you are so proud when you finish a race.

p.s. I don't think your a hard head- maybe a space ailen with super powers. LOL

Lilburn, GA

LOL!!!

Hi Spider,

What is the longest distance you've run? How long have you been doing this? Biggest question of all - are you 'gellin'?!!

Victor

Lilburn, GA

Victor, the longest distance was the 8h run. I think i did about 35M. Don't remember.

I also did a 50k (30M) trail race in Feb 2005. Then, some marathons.

I haven't done a marathon here in the US yet but am thinking about the Atlanta one, in November.

What is gellin? Sorry but i don't know what it means. :o)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Dr. Scholls gel pads - the commercials are on tv and radio all the time! Everyone asks, "Are you gellin'?"

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I'll bet anyone who devotes that much time to running plus DG doesn't have time to turn the tv on...

Lilburn, GA

Pod is right. I don't watch TV although sometimes I watch the 70's Show. i do wildlife rehab so, when I am waiting for midnight to arrive and stop feeding baby birds, I watch it to pass the time.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Birds how neat. I have always admired the nurturers of birds. Do you do the Raptors? Had a friend (state game warden) raised a mockingbird. State bird protected by the state so he got alot of ragging. He was an enthusiast. We have only done squirrels and a fawn.

Lilburn, GA

No Pod, I don't do raptors, just songbirds. I have done lots of squirrels and opossums. And a baby flying squirrel and one chipmunk.

Now I have 4 squirrels that are ready for release, some baby robins and a newborn pigeon.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Tending to that many at one time is enough to say grace over. We had a flying squirrel to raise and turn loose. I occasionally see them being sold at flea markets and hate that. I think we will be judged by how we treat all life. You are doing a special job.

Lilburn, GA

what Pod?!?! flying squirrels being sold??? It is illegal. Poor little guys. I would go mad if I saw it!!!!!

Thank you for the kind words. I love taking care of wildlife ( not just wildlife but anything that needs care and attention.)

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm am not sure that Texas regulates the squirrels. For example, we are not supposed to rehab deer w/out licensing but squirrels are exempt. I would have to check further on selling same. Still don't like it!

Lilburn, GA

Here you have to be licensed or work under someone licensed to be able to rehab wildlife.

It is against the law to hold wildlife for more than 48h without a licence. But I have so many peeps phoning me and saying that they will be keeping babies. There is nothing i say that will change their minds. And even being against the law, no one will do anything about it.

The problem is, peeps keep baby squirrels when they are small and cute but when they grow and start scratching and biting, people let them go. they do not know what to eat in the wild, how to protect themselves so they end up dying hungry or being eaten by other animals. Many times they don't recognise themselves as squirrels and are unable to mate.

Having said that, many peeps find a baby and do a great job of caring for it and releasing it successfully. this is great as there are not enough rehabbers out there to care for all. I started my rehab life like that. Found a baby but could not get hold of any rehabbers to care for it.

As long as peeps are responsible and accept that most of the time a wild animals will not be happy as a pet, they will do a great job.

Coming down my box, now.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Amen!
