I've noticed what look like little black flies on my tomato plants (black bodies, transparent wings held upright). I've also noticed even smaller gray dots, which may or may not be another bug or, possibly, bug poop. (Couldn't tell from a quick eyeball). Anyone have any guesses? Should I spray with soap just to make sure?

Little black flies on tomato plants? (X posted)
Not sure what they are, but they sound like sucking insects of some sort which are bad for tomatoes because they transmit viruses when they move from one plant to another. Try pyrethrin or soap spray or a combination of the two. I have lost many a tomato plant to diseases transmitted by very tiny little sucking insects.
