Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

This was ugly enough until I saw the pic and the big hooks on it's feet. Plant eater? Bug eater??

The antennae aren't quite as bushy as I expected they should be, so I'm not positive of this, but I think it might be a scarab beetle (family Scarabaeidae). Usually large scarabs like that feed on rotting logs, though a few may eat roots. Was it attracted to a light? That's usually when these guys show up, buzzing around a light at night.

I found it walking on my patio in the late morning. Unusually cool day, if that makes a difference.
