Anyone know if this is good or bad?

Looks like one of the ground beetles (there are many of them)...Most are predaceous on other insects, even snails and slugs. Some climb trees looking for caterpillars (think tent caterpillars and webworms)..
Where did you find it and what was it doing? How big is it?

Is it still alive?

CEE,

If you could answer those questions, it would be a BIG help....

I think ceejaytown is correct. It looks like a ground beetle to me as well.

The closest other thing would be a darkling beetle (family Tenebrionidae), but the apparently 5,5,5 tarsi and non-notched eyes would put this more in ground beetles (Carabidae). (Darkling beetles have 5,5,4 tarsi and I count 5 tarsal segments on the back feet in your picure.)
