knolan, I agree. that PBS show was a veritable "whinefest". I think if our pioneers had seen that show they would be rolling their eyes from here to China, lol
knolan thread
Somtimes I think the producers want the drama....it makes for good ratings. Like on Supernanny......so really who has kids that behave like that, and if you did, do you really not know why?
Vossner, you're right, I don't think the pioneers would be watching the show long, they would be saying, "ooohhh, indoor toilets?
Can you imagine wearing those petticoats, being buttoned up to there, sweating (excuse me - ladies glow, pigs sweat, or so I was taught by an old friend from Fort Worth), no baths, so dirty, too. Cooking on those hot stoves in the house, every day for three big meals a day, trying to sleep in a hot room (add the "inner glow" that ladies of a certain age get) , etc. The whole thing sounds like H E double hockey sticks on earth.
My father in law is the museum director at Sam Houston State and they put on a folk festival every year in April and everyone dresses in period costume (except me) and they burn up. Thank goodness they do it in April and not July or August. Hoopskirts, petti coats......shoot, I won't even put on a pair of panty hose much less all that hoopla. They have fun though and my daughter looks so cute all dressed up. Hubby looks pretty cute too.
Ok imagine all that and the fact that these folks didn't believe in bathing daily...ugh the smell of your husband after he'd been working all day- and the smell of you after you'd been working all day!
That's what love is April, hanging in there even when ya smell!
Oh I think I'd have opted to become a nun.
A gardening nun? A smelly gardening nun?
I don't think nuns smell
Ya never know, they're practically like those frontier women. Clothes on underneath that black garb. And then working out in the garden on top of that! PeeeeeYewwww!
Well, that's the beauty of the frontier...the cowboys and the horses, the smell would be just a minor nuisance. Maybe you'd get used to it, like when you wear the same perfume all the time, after a while you can't even smell it!
Bottom line, if I'm gonna smell, I'm not going to be a nun.
Sister Fly_Girl, my, how you smell today!
No I am thinking that I would be a nun because I wouldn't want to be close to any other human being if we smelled that bad!
I had to take 3 showers yesterday. No AC and working in the yard, oh, how I stunk. Add my friend's stinky dog jumping all over me. My husband ordered me to the shower.
I bet they didn't wear clothes under the habit, that's what I would have done, who would know?
When I sweat, I really don't smell that bad, maybe you'all do, but I don't. I would have been a popular frontierswoman or nun;)
What's wrong with you?????? You have to be stinky...it's a requirement! Maybe you're just not working hard enough. Back to the garden with you woman!
April, what do you think of a 'cottage garden' forum. Terry DG admin said I should start a thread and see what kind of response we get. This kind of forum could be about annuals and perennials instead of 2 separate forums. And it seems alot of people have cottage gardens, at least their pix look like it.
I like the idea of a 'cottage garden' forum. That's pretty much what I have. I 'mix and match' most of my plants.
Okay Dancey, I think I'll go ahead and start one and see what happens. :)
I like the idea of a cottage garden forum as well- and fly you are not working hard enough, that's clear!
Let's see the cottage garden forum.
Has anyone around here ever planted holly hocks and have you had any luck? I love those things but a guy at a local nursery told me no way.
Just got those cosmos planted in the bed with the roses. I need something blue around them. What do ya'll think? And then maybe something orange around the edge of all the roses. Suggestions?
Another question......deep into the dirt, close to te pine trees there are tiny little white worms. Any idea what they might be?
Holly hocks - I used to drive by a house where someone had planted those huge black ones! They were great. They can't stand the heat/hummidity of our summers, don't know if they reseed- I would think they are a cool season annual.
No but 2 things- don't play w/ them and make sure you wash your hands.
Try this for blue

Very nice! Those would look perfect. I must find. Aaahhh...a new quest for tomorrow.
K, that bed looks great!
I start hollyhocks from seed in Feb and stagger them a week apart until you're tired of it. They bloom here. They get the rust so just put them in the back of the bed and pull the leaves off. Then when they go to seed you collect the seeds for next year.
April, I'm working hard on the forum PLAN. These things don't happen overnight.
Oh...K are you in the loony bin with your laptop? I don't see those cosmos, what the %^&&*& you been doing all evening?
Great advice. I really want holly hocks. I have another bed just waiting for them.
I'm not in the loony bin.....yet. I think if I buy anything else I'm headed straight there. But I have to finish the bed!!!! Darn it. And what would I do on my lunch hour (bookstore or nursery)? Well, I'm not finished with the one book and this bed needs to get completed. Guess it's the nursery.
The cosmos are surrounding the trees. Bright yellow. And the sickly looking blobs around the entire bed are the transplanted ruellia in major shock. And in the very center of the bed is a purple Duranta. You can't really see it because the roses are bigger than it is (for the time being).
No rush Fly
Kristi- beds never look their best while you are creating them. Next year and the year after will be much better! this fall those plants will have a nice chance to grow- give them some decent fertilizer and really you will be suprised!
April, should I use fish sauce, I mean emulsion? Oh what am I saying.....too stinky.
Yeah, I wish the beds would just "hop to it" but I know patience is a virtue. Or at least someone told me that once.
I would use something- for one thing you have stressed the plants just by planting them, also it's hot out side and that's never really good for plants- so a little fish emulsion, superthrive, seaweed stuff- something to help them w/ the stress, either that or you will have to pay for psycho therapy for them to deal w/ their stress.
Just take em to the loony bin when you go.
April's right.....ya gotta do something!
Fly, not many people have actually said that before, "April's right..." I like the sound of that. could you guys put that at the bottom of all your posts? LOL, Kidding.
April, you're right. Does that feel good?
April, you're right. April, youre right.
No, I'll definitely give them a little boost tomorrow. Just too tired and dark to go back out there now.
But, April, you're right ;>}
Lol! Do you think CG should go under Garden Tours or Classic or Garden Design?
