Ant hill near hosta

Buffalo, NY(Zone 6a)

This morning I noticed ants setting up shop about 6 inches away from a prized small Hosta. What can I do to get rid of them that won't hurt the Hosta? I also have the same type of small ant nesting right at the edge of my pond. They are under a mature planting of creeping evergreen. The pond has fish so anything I do musn't drift into the pond. Right now using chemicals would not be out of the question. I want them ....gone. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Make a soil drench with orange oil in water to drench the mound, it kills the ants right away, doesn't harm the plants, and doesn't poison the soil. This works beautifully on our fire ants down here. Last year my Mexican Mint Marigold was almost buried in an ant mound (not fireants), the drench took care of the ants without harming the plant. It does kill grass, though. You can buy it in the organic garden products dept @ Lowes. You probably wouldn't want it to get into the pond - a little probably wouldn't hurt, but just to be safe.

Thank you for help maggiemoo. I called my plant nursery and of course, they recommended poison. The orange oil sounds like a better option. My mother used to pour boiling water over the mound but thats out in this case. Thanks again, Gloria
