Sweet pea problem what is it?

Northern, VA(Zone 7a)

Any idea whether this is a virus, or what? I'm pretty sure it's not powdery mildew -- I see that all the time. Any other ideas?

It's rampant near the bottoms of the stems, hardly in evidence at all near the tops.

thrip damage?

Northern, VA(Zone 7a)

Hmmm. I haven't had thrips before, so I'm not sure. Here's another photo.

here is a site to look at. the last picture you posted doesn't look like damage so much as overwatering or underfeeding. http://images.google.com/images?q=thrip+damage&hl=en&btnG=Search+Images

Lake Forest, CA(Zone 10a)

The same thing has happened to my "Miss Wilmotts". The only pest I found were aphids- big green fatties. The only friend I saw was the most adorable little brown preying mantis. I live in zone 10a - started them from seed in early march and transplanted them to pots and to raised beds. One vine withered completely, amd the other two are hanging on, but very sickly looking and show no sign of flowering. What is so bizarre is that the seedlings that I gave away thrived- saw them a month ago with thick juicy vigourous stalks. Mine are all rangy and weak looking. The only advice I have received is that I started then too late for my zone, andshould have sowed directly in the ground in the late fall.

Don't know if this helps, but maybe it's another piece to the puzzle...
