ROFL re: "were you a mushroom in your former life? dark and damp makes you flourish?"

This week has been nice enough that I have moved all of my young spoon tomatoes outside.

bluelytes, be assured, this too will pass.

Lakebay, WA

My 12 and 9 year olds help me in the yard regularly. My 12yo daughter loves to cook, so I'm already considering culinary schools. She weeds, waters, and watches over the herb garden and has used chives and basil on several dishes. Then there is my 9yo son who is in deep compost because of running through the flowerbeds and crushing a few dahlia plants. I have a young neighbor girl (she is 9 also) who comes over in the evenings and sits on the grass while I water or weed and asks questions about what plants are what. We as gardening types will pass on to our kids the same lessons that our parents passed on to us. They are tiny seeds, but they will sprout and grow and seed again one day.

Yay for sunshine! Another nice one today from the looks of it. Clear and sunny at work in Bonney Lake.

Salem, OR(Zone 8a)

Okay, who is responsible for this heatwave, hmm?

You got your sunshine. Are you happy now? ;)

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

(smiling)....it was mari on June 20 remember the nerd.. volcano.... ya know.... I LOVE IT

Viv

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I was out working in the yard til 2:30 this afternoon and thought I was going to have a heat stroke. But I am NOT complaining. poor bluelytes.

West Seattle, WA(Zone 8b)

It's really windy here; the hot wind is drying my plants out so bad, some of them wilted *while* the soaker hoses were dripping.

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

SALEM,
you call THIS sunshine?? Its more like fire and brimstone :( Its 6:46 pm, and its 88 freekin degrees!! This is as BAD as CALI!! Waaaahhhhh!!!

I hadda go out at 2am to do garden stuff, (heat stroke prevention). I am afraid to go out in the Daytime. Yesterday, Satan walked up and said "Hello". I infomed him that he was LOST, and he said, "This HAS TO BE Hell, its hotter here than it is at home".

ROTFLMHO!!!!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Blue - Monday is supposed to be hotter - who is responsible?
I just came in from finishing up watering and weeding (11 pm). The negative part of night gardening is the mosquitoes. Halogen lights on a stand are my "sunlight", and when it cooled down a bit, it was quite a pleasant evening. Since the lights require moving to facilitate seeing, it makes me focus on 1 thing at a time.
Personally, I would have preferred the past several weeks at about 75 degrees, instead of this all-at-once hellacious heatwave. The vegies are stressed, and so am I!
Does anyone know what the weather trend is for this summer? I did not read the Almanac this year, so I am clueless. But then again, so are the meteorologists...
Happy Monday to y'all!

Seattle Burbs, WA(Zone 8b)

Lol bluelytes.........

Katye - I like your gardeing at night with lights method. I'm not entirely thrilled about weeding in this heat today!

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

Was so hot at 2am, I could not get my sprinkler project online yet, CURSE YOU ALL who WANTED this CALI type of heat!!!!!!!!! heheheh

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

OMG you guys,,, we've had four days of sunshine,, give it at least two weeks before you start praying for the rain again....

Katey: I'm sure the summer weather trend will be typically NW. Dry and warm except on the 4th of July,, and any other important date you dont want rain!!! picnic, fair days, outside BBQ. So I suggest if you want rain... plan something outside that you really really want to do..

Blue: Make some lemonaide?

I'm walking on sunshine... oh yeah.. and dont it feel good..

Viv

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

VIZZ,
Thats why I have a COVERED screen porch. Dont NEED no stinking sun for BBQ, etc., lol. Warm?? WARM?? Warm would be 65, NOT 95!!! :o(

Only 95° there yesterday, blue??? It is 105° here yesterday.......according to my thermometer, that is....I don't care what the weather people say it was. ;o)

Just came back from a BEAUTIFUL weekend on Whidbey island! It was absolutely stunning! Weather in the low 80's , not a cloud in the sky. I could almost feel manic on days like this! Plus, I came home to my first waterlily bloom! It doesn't get better than that.
Viv, we're walking on sunshine! We need to line up another nerd/virgin just in case this sun doesn't last. Can anyone believe how wonderful my succulent garden thinks this is???
I will not complain about heat. Never. If there is no air movement, this is why God invented fans. Gardening at night is a great option for those who need to stay out of the heat. (Afterall, we garden at night during the entire winter. Why should it be different now? I've got my halogen light set up permanently when winter sets in.) And we should take a good lesson from the people who live with heat all the time - stay out of it in the middle of the day, and drink plenty of water. This is a great day to sit in the garden, in the shade, and do absolutely nothing!!!
Sorry blulytes - sympathetic I am not. ( unless you have a heat related illness) . And then I highly recommend a nice cool movie theater.

Line up the virgins. We might need them later.

Tacoma, WA(Zone 8a)

Pixy what a great weekend for the NWRU.... could'nt have planned it better.. I'll bet it was fantastic!!!!

Ditto on complaining about the heat... summer in the NW is far and few between... or let me say summer in Western Wash. NW is far and few between... grew up in Eastern Wa. no lack of summers there.

Have a great day everyone!!!!

Viv

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

VIZZ, Backattcha!! :) :) What do you MEAN few an far between??? We have summer here EVERY YEAR!!!

PIXY,
Sitting around in 95 degree shade is NO DIFFERENT, its still FREAKING HOT. WANTED: virgins for a one way trip to the sun.

The PNW Roundup was too small - wish Blue & Vizz could have come, too! Sure enjoyed the three (plus their dh's) that I did get to meet.

Pixy, I forgot to mention, I think, that your kids are great - I know they didn't hang around much, but when they did they were friendly and sweet. You dun good.

And, Blue, I agree - 65 is warm enough (maybe 70) . . . but this 80 - 90 stuff is just not my style! Guess I'll be at the computer most of the day. With the ac on (came with the house and I thank my lucky stars!).

Yes, Murmur, it was too small. Maybe the next one will be larger. but it was high quality!! I'm glad you liked the kids. My daughter has just started to have what we think may be a thyroid problem and she has put on so much weight I hardly know her. She feels terrible about it and so she didn't bother to hang out with the grownups. Also, she figured we would be talking plants, which bore her to tears. But they are good kids, and I'm glad to have them.

blue, maybe you need to go over to Murmer's house to stay cool. Or maybe a cool shower?
me, I'm going outside right now to sit by the pond and bake! So Alive!

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Strange, isn't it, Pixy - all I noticed about your daughter is that she is beautiful!!! And so sweet. Hope she knows that she is lovely (don't blame her for not wanting to hang out with us boring plant geeks, though!). I thoroughly sympathize with any weight issues. I've lost 40 pounds in the last couple years, but put about 8 back on. I'd like to lose another 15, but don't know if it will ever happen. I do too much snacking on ice cream type items, I'm afraid.

Blue, it is indeed cooler here than in Oly, but it's still hotter than I deal well with! I'm heading out to a shady part of the yard to yank out horsetail and other lovely weeds.

Yes, she is beautiful and sweet! Thanks for noticing!

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

Ahhhhhh, 50F out at 1230am, PERRRRFFEEECCT for night gardening, not like that Hell like 80 we had last night at this same time.

It's on the way, normal Western Wash temps.. for the next two days.. and ofcourse, the 4th is coming, so that means RAIN.
Hang in there Blue....

Viv

Whidbey Island, WA(Zone 7a)

Yup. Rain on the 4th - I don't know the statistics, but I'm sure it happens more often than not. I remember one year awhile back where we had a drought - and the only day the entire summer that it rained was July 4th. Probably about 1992 or 1993.

Lakebay, WA

Someone sacrificed at the volcano last night. It was HOT at 6PM, then suddenly it was so nice and cool. I actually closed windows last night as I was chilly!

I remember that year, Murmur. Yep, rain on the 4th seems the usual course of events. Last year, however, the 4th was perfect! We spent 2 days out on the boat among all the tall sailing ships. It was a real blast,, plus we got away from all the fireworks in the neighborhood.
Yep, looks like Blue will be able to come up from the cave real soon!

Olympia, WA(Zone 8b)

MARI,
CLOSED your windows?? DANG, we hadda have them OPEN the ENTIRE NIGHT just to get the HEAT OUT from earlier in the day. Thank goodness it is NICE today.

Lakebay, WA

We had a pretty nice breeze blowing in Lakebay last night and with 4 fans blowing, the house cooled down pretty quick. I prefer heat over cold! Gorgeous day today here in Bonney Lake up on this hill, probably a degree or few hotter for those in the Sumner valley. It's nice to see people walking around with a spring in their step versus the really hot days when people were looking like wilted underwatered plants hehe.
